I've been noticing this season, that Foster, once set will stand up, look at Ben, and then reset during Ben's cadence. WTF is that? You know the snap count. The only thing I'm finding this is doing is keying the snap of the football off to the D. We're not snapping the football when Foster stands up and turns around. When he gets set, we're snapping. Teams haven't really hurt us on it yet, but if I notice it, look out when we play NE again. They'll start shooting gaps each and every time Foster resets. Drives me freakin nuts.

Anyone else notice this?

I've noticed that since last season, especially in away games. I thought it was a thing while Pouncey wasn't there to improve communication between Ben and the C. See how Foster slaps the C in the calf to let him know Ben's ready for the snap

It's a reason they do this. It's on purpose. Foster taps Pouncey once Ben finishes looking over the defense. When Ben is ready Foster taps Pouncey to snap the ball.. they do it in a way the defense can't jump the snap too

Foster will also, sometimes, set then look back twice.
Even after tapping Pouncey on the calf. There's no rhyme nor reason, but it happens

There is a rhyme nor reason ....we just don't happen to know what it is

Um.. you guys are serious? Really? When they're in a silent count they go off Foster.. when he does it several times it's so the defense can't key? That's why Ben lifts his left two or three times also.

thats why I said there is a rhyme nor reason...they know what it is we certainly don't and hopefully the D doesn't figure it out hence the changes it what they all do

All it is is a silent snap count. They pretend like they're going to snap it. Foster taps MP then Ben raises his leg then he stops and looks up. They're just trying to bait the defense to show their defensive look. He does it two or three times each snap. The problem I have is them waiting till 1 second to snap it all the time which was a problem a few years ago. They acknowledged that and fixed it. Defense can def tee off then.

I like Ben's leg lifts, because that IS the snap count. one lift, 2 lifts, 3 lifts. The D can't key on that. Each time Foster resets, I notice the snap is immediate after he resets. I can key on it.

I think the leg lifts are the decoy. Foster looks back to see if Ben is ready, has adjusted the O the way he wants it, etc. When he's determined that Ben is set to go, he taps MP; who then snaps the ball on a silent count (2, 3, 4, etc). Everyone on O knows what the count is so they are set to go when Pouncey snaps the ball. Actually, I marvel at the level of discipline and timing that is required to execute this w/out someone moving, jumping early, etc.

btw, I don't think this is "Tomlin outsmarting the defense" .. I think the usage of this type of snap count increased when Munch came aboard. Maybe it's his input?

They've been doing this for a long time. Its just part of how they play the line of scrimmage. Football doesn't just start once the ball is snapped. Whatever the method to their madness is, as long as Ben isn't getting hit I'm ok with Foster looking back and getting the job done.

Announcers discussed it during one of the games. I'm surprised anyone has an issue with it. It ain't just Ramon doing whatever he wants and it isn't timed such that the D can key on it (theoretically)...

There is a reason teams haven't hurt the Steelers with them doing this offense. It is a non issue.

Ernie cheating Adams and his crew must be doing some number crunching generating logarithms that can explain the rationale on Foster's movements.

Off-topic, Foster started a little shaky but has been a ******* rock for the team in both run and pass phases

If you haven't noticed, FOSTER eats rocks. Right ON

Salute the nation

You're right though, I haven't seen anyone called for a false start on the road because of it. I'm going to time it this next game to see how variable the snaps are after his reset.

Speaking of Foster, I would like to have Reuben come the draft.

Hell he even has ben in his name too.

A must have chatters!

Too soon?

;)

Buckeye is correct. This was talked about a couple weeks ago on the tube as there are several teams that do it. MP can't get the defense assignments called since he has to drop his head to judge where Ben is. If he does the Defense can change their look. To combat that, RF starts the process for when the D is called and when there is no change he gives the love tap. Then Ben can either start the count with leg/hand signals that is the go call for either player motions, silent count, reset or MP's ready snap decided in the huddle. When they go to their "sugar" huddle, where Ben is only with the backs/receivers, he then calls the alignment at the line which includes which count they will use.
