Player grades for the defense for 9 games played

Davis is starting Sunday

Ridiculous........Davis is the worst player on this defense by far. With all of his idiosyncrasies and lack of even basic football abilities he should be cut. Jarvis Jones is better according to the player grades. He should be starting over Davis at Safety at the least.

Oh with Golden regressing badly and Shark not smart enough to play, I actually think starting Davis is a good thing. Play the younger guy, if the veteran in front of his is now very good and find out, is very much how I see things.

feel bad for Golden, the guy tries hard and is smart but he lacks tools

Wait a moment Coach, not trying to throw you under the bus, but you said in another thread, something like "Davis football IQ is about as low as Sharmarko Thomas" and "Davis IQ is lower than his jersey number". So how can you figure playing him much less starting him is a good thing? You believe he's not smarter than Thomas, why would he be better than say, Dangerfield or any of the others players graded higher?

Coach also still says he questions Burns's "long speed". Would it help if he noted that in 2012 he was the 2nd fastest 110m hurdler in the world junior games or isn't 110m long enough?

Too high of grades IMO.

Didn't do the math, but I'm pretty sure those average out to a low B or high C.

Which would mean that we have a average to above average defense.

We don't.

Lower most of those by at LEAST half a grade (some more) and that would be more realistic.
You really didn't do the math. There are like 5 or 6 D+ a couple of B's that doesn't average a low B dude. And let's be honest for a minute. In more than half these games Washington, Cincinnati, Jets, Ravens, Miami, KC the defense wasn't a real problem.

If Davis was a rookie free agent he would not be starting. He's a second round pick. With little talent in front of him you almost have to play him to find out if his duh moments are a pattern or just Part of being a rookie.

But I see no plays on the ball except for the bad pass at him that most nfl players intercept.

Using language about as low Thomas is not as low as Thomas. Are your going to defend Davis' dumb plays?

Dangerfield has not been played much but I think he's a better tackler and run defender. If he was the 2nd round pick and Davis a non drafts type I suspect Dangerfield would start.

Cleveland is terrible. Davis gets and easy start. We'll see how he does when the ball comes his way.

I give these grades a solid D, but am grading on a curve haha...should be lower pretty much across the board

Heyward B, Tuitt C, Mathews D, Walton INC
Hargraves C, McCullers D
Harrison B/C+, JJ C-, Chicky C-, Moats D+
Shazier B-, Timmons C+, Williams C, Dirty Red C-
Cockrell B, Burns C, Gay C
Mitchell F, Davis C, Golden D, Dangerfield C

And that's generously grading the boys on a curve...could easily lower Heyward (injuries), Shazier (injuries) and I cut Hargraves, Davis and Burns some slack because they're rookies.

The D sucks. We all know it. But, I have a feeling we see something different this weekend. At least, different from what they've been doing so far this year. Hell, why not. What they've been doing has gotten worse as the weeks have gone by instead of better.

The only possible improvement on this defense would be Dupree coming back but what can you expect from him. Looks like they will need to spend at least one big pick on a force unit player next year.

as pointed out in the other thread where you bash the kid....he has not been targeted much at all so this stat is meaningless....

What rookie FA has started in this decade, better yet this century?

Like you said "there is little talent in front of him", so a 2nd round pick would be the player you put in there.

You see no plays on the ball because, as Coolie pointed out, he hasn't had many thrown his way.

What dumb plays are you speaking of? The release on the punt which was blocked? It's been pointed out by numerous posts and links that Danny Smith said he (he ST coach) was at fault for the miscommunication between Davis and Golden. The face mask penalty sure was a poor play on his part, but again as noted in other posts and links, the kid was trying to make a play. What about Cockrell's PF penalty? That resulted in continuing a drive in the first half that resulted in a TD. I don't see see any vilification on Cockrell from you about it.

Dangerfield hasn't played much, because Davis and Golden are outplaying him. Davis has 3 times more tackles than him. Based on the current stats, Dangerfield (who I like as well), if he was the second rounder would be backing up either UDFA Davis or Golden. How is Davis not the better tackler?

....wait no need to answer that, we know what you are going to say regardless of the statistical facts.

One thing I'll say is that both Mitchell and Tuitt have been huge disappointments this season, after coming off strong seasons in 2015.

I just don't get it, as they should both still be well in their athletic primes.

The only positive defensively is the potential the young CBs like Burns and Cockrell have shown. That's at least something to try to build on.

The defense came out to hit today. I haven't seen them play like that in years. They made it happen. They need to play like that every week from here on out. I hope Dupree can start contributing soon.

How disappointing were they today?
