Is Chickillo slowly convincing you he might be starting material?

He's already tied Jarvis Jones career high for the season, with plenty of games to go. 2.5 sacks, 2 Forced Fumbles. My initial thoughts were he's a very good 3rd OLB or good enough 2nd OLB starter if paired with a dominant edge rusher type.
 
Comparing his career to JJ up to this point is kind mind boggling. .....what has JJ done in his career? Nothing. You should find someone else to compare him to honestly. Up to this point he gets pushed around like the rest of our LBers. Nothing special really to date.
 
Chickillo would not be starting for just about any other team in the NFL. It illustrates how bad our LB core as a whole is when we are even having this discussion. Jarvis has been a one trick pony his entire career, if he can't bull rush the tackle, then he ends up 10 yards down field behind the QB.

You can't say that. He had very few opportunities in 2015 and had to switch from DL to OLB. Essentially he's played about as much as a 2016 rookie starter has and might be coming into his own. He could end up with 4-6 sacks this season, which would not be bad at all.

While he's not dominant as a speed rusher, bull rusher, or in coverage, he's not below average in them either. He's also got effort and NFL bloodlines on his side and decent speed and movement skills.

Rudy Ruettiger had good effort too, did you ever see him starting at ND. Your own points state it perfectly, he is a mediocre player with mediocre skills. Bloodline doesn't mean squat, just ask the Simms family.

Haha well mediocre skills is top notch for this D so I guess he should be starting. 😉

This team could use a few Rudy's. Leadership matters and this team lack its. Chickillo is not a physical Rudy. He was a 5-star college recruit, stuck on a dysfunctional defensive Miami Hurricanes team.

Chickillo's snaps to splash play ratio suggests he's capable of more. If he had all the starting snaps ( or double his current snap count for arguments sake ) , he might have 5 sacks by now, and another 2 forced fumbles with 9 games played. Sorry-- that's on pace for 9.5 sacks per game and 4 forced fumbles. A notch below pro bowl for an edge rusher. Just saying!

There is no difference between Chick, Jones, and Moats for me at this point. Well Jones flashes a little against the run but that's it. I won't go as far as to say our OLB unit is solely responsible for how bad the D is, because that's obviously not true, but it's definitely the worst group we've had in my lifetime

You give me two legitimate OLBs and a lot of this defense instantly becomes better. ****, look what a difference a 39yr old makes when he is in.

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts we'd all have a Merry Christmas too. I don't care if he was a 5 star recruit in HS, what he did in college, or what brand of toothpaste he uses. He is a mediocre player at best who might get a few more snaps here and there because Jarvis and Moats are not much of an improvement. But sending the guy to the pro bowl based on projections of what might happen. I would like to see him get some more snaps over Jarvis, but that is because Jarvis is awful. Chick will still just be a mediocre player that when asked to start will get exploited for his physical limitations.
 
If Chicky could hold the point of attack maybe, but until that day which may never come he is a situational pass rusher...which we need, but on a team with even slightly above average LBers he is a special teamer who doesn't even enter the conversation.
 
Chicklo, in less than half a season splitting reps is better than Jones and Moats. When Dupree comes back, they play the same position so I am guessing they will split reps or they could try to move one of them to the other side. Those 2 are currently our best outside LB's, other than Harrison, who they have decided to not play much this year. Debo is still much better than Jones but they aren't playing him much.

There are some HS kids that would be an upgrade to Jones. Tomlin is never going to admit that his pick in Jones is a failure. Goes along with his whole stubborn trait, he will keep pounding that round peg into the square hole by God!

At what point do you believe he is starting material with no injured players at OLB? How can you say medcore for such a young player who has had limited opportunites?

When he shows he can win a the point of attack, something he will not do consistently. He is a ST player and that is about it. He is mediocre based on what I have watched in pre-season and his limited opportunities in the regular season. He is slow to the point of attack, cannot shed blockers to get release, and he is too slow to cover TE or slot receivers. He was stone walled by a 2nd/3rd string RB 2 times in the pre-season on a blitz.
 
C'mon Coach. Stop trying to win people over to make you look better about Chickillo.
The guy is not a starting OLB in this league. He is only in there b/c Dupree is out.

Dupree had 4 sacks last year. Chickillo who is not even starting will have more than that barring injury and will likely do it playing fewer snaps this year. He only needs 1.5 more sacks to tie Bud and 2 more to pass him.

Stop nothing. We need the best players on the field and the bad ones off it. But those decisions are made by the head coach.

GWH is average at best. He has a long way to go vs the run and in coverage. he has some pass rush skills but nothing spectacular

I'd say the comment of Chickiloo being starter worthy and that really being the story of the defense is spot on. He is a role guy. He plays hard. I like his effort. He isn't a premium player in this league and while it might be unfair to say, never will. He is a good situational player. The fact that he might be better than Jones and Moates really says it all.

No he, Chickillo, is not...he basically disappeared after the 1st quarter...
 
He is better than Moats IMHO. He does have more "get off" than Jones, but Jones is a more complete player.
