Chip, with that site, wouldn't the fact Timmons being gone next year would wash out either the AB or Bell signing on the cap next year?

With Timmons gone and a projected 30M or so of cap space, yes..anything is possible. I just have this feeling that there will be some bad feelings that come out of contract negotiations for either Bell or AB. Both have hinted at some pie in the sky money. In the past the Rooneys have generally resisted those kind of contracts except for the players key to the success of the team..( ie..Ben, Troy). We'll have some extra money, maybe even enough for a surprise FA but I don't know..I just got a bad feeling.

Another change I didn't realize 'till now, was the extra cap space...that was news to me.

I ran the numbers in my article, that is still being held,. If the cap goes up 11M we will have 20M in cap space. This article does quick math and fails to realize the cap increases from this year to next year, for the players currently on our roster. about 11M is being eaten up by salary increases next year.

Still..... $20m can buy a lot even after the rookie money comes out. This has to be potentially the best position we have been going into a season in a long time. Looking at the numbers, AB should be the easiest if he is reasonable and Bell could get done if he takes into account what a pain in the *** he's been to the team with his off field problems......fingers crossed.

That includes DE's

that's depressing. Still, JJ would be kept for average money. Look how they kept Ramon Foster, Willie Gay, Golden. They didn't waste money there, really team friendly deals, they might be learning after the Worilds fiasco

I wrote an article, that will one day be released on this site, Here is how I looked at the Free Agents we would retain. As far as Landry Goes, I think we may let him walk and retain Mettenberger, if he shows improvement in practice and an understanding of the offense. Then Draft a QB next year to be #3.

I've worked out a comprehensive cap number and projected a conservative 19M in cap space (with a conservative $10M salary cap increase next season)

Player 2016 Cap 2017 Projected Cap Difference in 2017
Antonio Brown $11.9M $8M - $4M
Le’Veon Bell $1.1M $12M $10.9M
Marcus Wheaton $1.8M $6M $4.2M
DeAngelo Williams $1.5M $1.5M $0
Greg Warren $0.7M $0.7M $0
Ross Cockrell $0.6M $2.5M $1.9M
Fitzgerald Toussaint $0.6M $0.6M $0
Ricardo Matthews $0.6M $0.6M $0
David Johnson $0.6M $0.6M $0
Alejandro Villanueva $0.5M $4M $3.5M
LJ Fort $0.5M $0.5M $0
Anthony Chickillo $0.5M $0.5M $0
Chris Boswell $0.5M $1.5M $1M
Roosevelt Nix $0.5M $0.8M $0.3M

Total difference $17.8M

Do you think they will retain Wheaton at a cost of $6mil? Has he earned that and aren't there less expensive and viable options on the roster now? I also don't see us giving Bell $12 mil. He's great, but he will get low balled by the FO for his suspension issues and battle damage. I want him to stay, but I just can't see that number coming out of our FO.

If timmons leaves, harrison retires, and JJ is not signed we will be freeing up some money and maybe better through subtraction.
JJs production can be matched by just about any competant NFL LB and probably for cheaper.
Timmons is ok but getting slower and way too expensive. I just do not think he ever had the "IT" factor to make him great.
If it wasn't for getting held most every play Harrison would have a lot of sacks this year, but i still think it's time for him to retire.
As for Bell and AB going to be a tough one. Brown seems to be turning into a pouting Diva and Bell has off field issues. The steelers have a ton of talent at WR and i think we would be OK without Brown. I am not concerned about Browns production this year as much as attitude. I would like to see him stay a steeler.
We do not have much behind bell, but I'm sure some team will offer him monster money. I don't think we will pay what he wants.
I still think we need to get an upper free agent on defense. Drafting is not working out. If the pass rush market is thin we could upgrade at safety / cb. If gilbert works out and golson is serviceable at least our secondary may not be too bad. Gay is getting up there in years maybe he would be a good safety conversion.

That site has our cap space at 28M+ figuring on a 155M cap. The estimates I've seen show an anticipated 165M cap. Add in the rollover of unused cap from 2016 and we should be looking at somewhere in the 35-45 M range without restructuring anyone. We will give AB a large deal, likely franchise Bell still leaving us probably 20 M give or take. Have to keep at least 7-8 for rookies and in season open cap space. So even in a year with record cap space for us we'll likely only be looking at 10-15 left after key resignings leaving us in the bottom third of the league with the ability to sign maybe 1 key FA and a role player or two...in other words we're Steeler rich!!!

Maybe they restructure DeCastro or Heyward to give us even more room to try to get another SB run in the waning Ben years.

A month ago when I wrote my article, Yes, I felt Wheaton's value was in the $6mil range. Now not so much. I'd let him walk with the emergence of Sammi Coates, Hamilton, and Eli. We also have Ayres on the PS and I think he has some value on this roster.

Bell's $12M is the estimated Franchise Tag to keep him a Steeler no matter what. I think that is on the table for the Steelers to use next season. You have to keep in mind, though that number is high for one season, it doesn't create any dead money for 2018, and also gives the Steelers a chance to negotiate a cap friendly multi year deal before the start of the 2017 season.

How can you watch Bell play, see whats behind him, and not make him a priority?

The cap will be fine, especially in 2017.

If they decide to sign both Brown and Bell, those first year cap numbers will be relatively low. It looks like we're going to carry $5 million in cap room over into next year. And we have huge potential to create room by restructuring DeCastro and Heyward.

The money is in the offense for this team the next 3 seasons. The offensive line is making lots. Brown, Bell, Roethlisberger. All big contracts. We'll get by with very cheap backup QB's. Very cheap TE's. And we'll continue to use young WR's behind Brown (not sure what that mean for Bryant but his suspension helps us retain him longer I think).

Defense will be young, young and young. Look for most of our premium draft choices (first 3 rounds) to be on defense (2 our of the top 3 picks in every draft for the next 2-3 seasons for sure).

Any contract for Bell needs to have money back clauses in for any future missed tests etc. If not then let someone else take that risk. He is a difference maker but if you start paying franchise money then your guy has to be cleaner than clean.

Bryant has the same issue but will have a Randy Moss-lite kind of career IMO. Bounce around a few teams being really ******* good in patches and then suspended again. He would be a massive risk to sign. Huge reward obviously but he would also have to have clauses forcing him to give his signing bonus back if he gets suspended again.
