There are certainly plenty of ways in which the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense can be criticized for their performance over the course of the first five games of the 2016 season. As it currently stands, they are giving up, on average, 302 yards through the air per game, which, as of the time of this writing, ranks 29th in the league, for example.

Their 379 yards allowed per game ranks 25th in the league. Their three interceptions on the season is a total tied for just 19th in the league. Their mere eight sacks—seven of which have come just in the last two games—ranks near the bottom of the league.

But where they have done an excellent job in four of the five games this season, anyway, has been where it matters most: on the scoreboard. The Steelers are allowing just 18.6 points per game after their 31-13 victory on Sunday, a total that included a 34-point stomping just a few weeks ago, from which they have recovered nicely.

As of the time of this writing, again, that statistical figure currently ranks ninth in the league. They are one of only nine teams who are averaging less than 20 points per game on the defensive side of the ball. And they are within 1.2 points—six actual points in total—of the fifth-best defensive points allowed mark in the league.

With all of the extraneous statistics that gets passed around all the time, it’s sometimes easy to lose sight of the fact that the only thing that really matters at the end of the day is how many more points the team scores than the other team, and the defense has done their part in holding down the opposing scoring.

Setting aside the Eagles game as an outlier, the Steelers have not allowed an opponent this season to score more than 16 points in a game, and the reality is that a lot of the damage on the scoreboard that they have been dealt this year has come in the fourth quarter, often when the result on the scoreboard has already been determined

Washington had just nine points entering the fourth quarter when they were already trailing by 15 points before they finally added a touchdown. The following week, the Steelers again held a 24-9 lead before the Bengals finally scored a touchdown.

Against the Chiefs last week, Kansas City had not even scored until the fourth quarter, and by then Pittsburgh had already scored 36 points. The Chiefs got two late touchdowns, bringing the total of touchdowns allowed in the fourth quarter with at least a 15-point lead to four, for 28 points, which is a little over 30 percent of the total amount of points they’ve allowed.

On Sunday, the defense shut out the Jets in the first half in spite of the fact that their 13 first-half points was the most they have allowed this year. Other than in the Eagles game, the defense has stepped up when it mattered most this year and kept the scoreboard down.

Ok,, and I think they are doing ok. But you also have to realize who we have played, and who is coming to town on the 23rd.. It wont be the same thing.

They need to find a way to get pressure , and make turnovers.

I think our defense is improving, which is impressive considering the injuries. But like Bleeder said, we have to get much better to stop the likes of the Pats and Cowboys (with their running game).

Somebody needs to double-check some grammar or something...

At any rate, the defense is performing well except that they allowed Brandon Marshall to run wide-*** open through the secondary the entire first half... That's not a good situation considering who the Steelers have coming up (Brady). They had better figure out a way to tighten-up coverages or they will get shredded.

Lol I just copied and pasted

They've beaten three, essentially four because the Jets choked their spot to us, playoff teams from a year ago.

If I'm game planning for Brady I'm not even investing much in trying to pressure him. I put almost all my energy into getting my db's to play close and jam/disrupt their wr's.

Anything else is just foolish with the lack of pass rush this d has. Brady will destroy us.

In fact doing what I'm saying gives our weak pass rush a little extra time to get to him. Its a high risk high reward tactic but, going about it the usual way is death by a thousand paper cuts.

The key to beating the Patriots will be making them one dimensional..stop the run.

Or using those damn trick plays when you're running and throwing all over them like the start of the game last year. Drive and momentum killer.

Hopefully they got that out their system with that stupid fake FG against the Jets

The best way to beat the Pats, is to score points and control the ball on offense. If the Steelers can continue to get in the endzone, and force the Pats to have to score to keep up, this will be a tough game for the pats to win.

I'm interested to see how our nickel backs do against the Pats' TEs this year. It's why we drafted Davis, so it will be interesting to watch him match up against Gronk.

Jam the wr like stated. If Gronk is healty he'll be hard to stop. So take away the recievers. Jamming them especially cause Brady likes to dink and dunk

Pressuring Brady is a waste of defensive allocations. He gets the ball out too quickly. Never rush more than four.

Play tight man bump coverage to disrupt timing of the routes with the dbs on the line and 2-3 deep over top depending on down and distance.

When it's all said and done our best D will be a good offense. Control the ball and put up over 30.

This... You have to disrupt the timing. If you can knock their WR's off their routes, then you can get to Brady. Our LB's are going to have a game though defending Bennett and Gronk

I've have to agree. you will rarely, if ever, get to Brady in time. If you do, you will, likely, get flagged. Have Harrison lay Edleman out on the first play so Edleman has to remember that the rest of the game. Let it go from there.

Assume the *'s are going to score 31 points and plan your Offense on that.

Oh, and, for what it is worth, the *'s scored 28 on the Steelers last year with what I think is a lesser talented DB group.

The Pats* are allowing 14.8 points per game. Putting up 30 on them is going to be a big ask.

Having said which:

@ Cardinals W 23-21
vs Dolphins W 31-24
vs Texans W 27-0
vs Bills L 16-0
@ Browns W 33-13

The Bills was an aberration IMO but in the other games the best O they faced was Arizona and they're currently ranked 11th. Cleveland are next at 17th so other than practising against their own O (6th - we're 5th) they haven't faced a top offense yet. I still think that 30 points will be a lot to ask.

We'd better find a way to take their TEs out of the game though. Bennett and Gronk are monsters and Timmons can't run with those guys. We need Shady back for that game.

The cheats don't get to play at home with us this year. That should cause issues for their head set jamming. It might be tougher to use signal steeling sony in the burgh. The steelers will still need to beat the cheats and the zebras but it will be at home. It would be fitting if the only thing in the pats head sets is renegade!

Thus far, we're allowing 13points and putting up 31 in that dumpster fire of a division that they play in.

The key will be stopping the run so that we can get them in obvious pass situations and them we can have DBs covering Gronk and Bennett. If it's LBs that means they have us in good down and distance for them. Then they are running play action against LBs who have to honor the run and cover Gronk and Bennett.

Can we Men in Black style delete that Eagles game from memory?

We can put up 30 vs Pats, the issue is keepingg them from scoring 60! Long successful drives that keep our defense off the field. This is a must win game. We need broncos vs pats divisional round match up and winner coming to PGH for conf round.

for the rest of the schedule maintain status quo... Cowgurl game has same feel as Eagles game. Difference is we have Bell and homefield. Hopefully we are still a healthy group
