Steven Johnson, L.J. Fort, and Tyler Matakevich.

If the Steelers keep 3 QB's, odds are one of these three is moved to the practice squad.

The trouble is all three are good enough to make some NFL rosters, so the odds of having the cut player land on the practice squad isn't very good.

In such a circumstance, the Steelers should try to trade one of these players for a future draft pick if possible.

I think Fort has the most value for the trade value. He looks solid as the ILB. Johnson appears to be the best of the bunch for special teams, and Matakevich looks to be the best vs the pass.

Wish they would of kept just two and kept all three including Feeney. Pack some good athletes onto special teams. Would give us good kick coverage and kick returns. Kick off returns suck

Johnson probably is a lock due to ST plays. It's a battle between Fort and Matak

Actually it's Fort who is looking like the lock and Dirty Red behind him. Tyler is running ahead of Johnson on special teams

Matakevich has the green dot on his helmet, meaning he gets the coaches communication link. This bodes well for his chances.

Steelers Connection: Analyzing the battles about to ensue for the final spots on the 53-man roster

The Pittsburgh Steelers will play their final preseason game of 2016 tonight in Carolina, and we break down 6 positions which will have roster implications when teams make their final cuts Saturday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing for their final preseason game of the 2016 season, and while most view this as the ultimate waste of time, for the players playing for a roster spot it is anything but a waste of time.

The team's roster has already been trimmed from 90 to 75, and they will have to eliminate even more players to get to the league mandated 53-man roster by Saturday at 4:00 p.m. EDT. So, which players are likely to make, and miss, the final cut? In this episode of the Steelers connection I provide you with 6 positions with battles which could lead to a final roster spot.

Check out the positions and players below, and listen to see my predictions on who wins each:

ILB
L.J. Fort
Tyler Matakevich
Steven Johnson

RB
Daryl Richardson
Fitzgerald Toussaint

TE
Xavier Grimble
David Johnson

OLB
Anthony Chickillo
Travis Feeney

OL
Chris Hubbard
B.J. Finney

Safety
Shamarko Thomas
Jordan Dangerfield

Keep an eye on these battles, as they likely will have major implications on the team's final roster, and don't miss out on my predictions for who signs with the team's practice squad after the final cuts have taken place.

Pretty sure Fort and Johnson aren't ps eligible Coach.

I think Red is the only one ps eligible and he is the one I would like to lose the least.

we need to either cut Johnson or trade him.

Dirty Red should be on the final roster.

Red has the best future of the three. Fort and Johnson have been in the NFL 3 years.

Rules for PS

Who's eligible for the practice squad?

Not all players are eligible for a team's practice squad. Eligibility is limited to players who were on an active roster for fewer than six games, or were on the 45-man active gameday roster for fewer than nine games. Plenty of practice squad spots will go to rookies who are still adjusting to the speed and skill of the NFL, but players with limited gameday experience or previous time on the practice squad to start their career are usually eligible, too.

A player is allowed on the practice squad for up to two years, with one year counting as six weeks in a season. A third year on the practice squad is only allowed if the team keeps 53 players on the active-inactive list at all times.

They could keep them all. Feeney looks like he's gone, either to the PS or another team on waivers

They've all done enough to earn a spot on the final roster. I think Matakevich has the highest upside, plus he's the youngest. More importantly, the talent gap isn't big enough to justify keeping Fort/Johnson over him. I like what Fort does a little on defense, though Johnson is probably slightly better on special teams.

GREAT analysis

Dirty Red should be on the final roster.

what if he were to take a shower and get cleaned up??? Would we call him "CLEAN RED" ???

What say you MTC........

It's just funny how we have the nicknames for our players. Uncle Jarvis being one of the funnier ones. Potsie (Farrior), I think our all time best was "the BUS".

I'd say just cause he's young and has a lot of potential. I think he can turn into a high quality starter for the Steelers soon. There is just something about his attitude and demeanor that makes you root for him. Haven't really got to see too much of him this pre season other than the Philly game, and from that short series he looked all over the place despite his lack of speed. I think with a bit more coaching into Butler's system, we can say Tomlin and co got a steal in the draft

I like Dirty Red. I like his instincts and the fact that he seems to read plays as well as the guy calling them. That said, he isn't jumping either Shazier or Williams to be a starter for the Steelers barring some catastrophe. And that's not counting Timmons who will start this year opposite Shazier.

While I can appreciate what each player can do for the team - like most, I believe that the two most worthy of spots on the roster are LJ Fort and The Red Baron...

Johnson is not eligible for practice squad. Tenured veteran and has been on the active roster for other teams more than PS would allow.

It would be awesome if Tyler Matakevich knocks Any Dalton out of a game. A rare ginger to ginger hit.

The most compelling argument I've read on keeping Matekevich is the upside. Johnson is not in this debate. He's in. It's between Fort and Mata. But if Fort wins, I don't see anyone claiming Red off waivers. Nearly every team passed on him for 7 rounds and all did for 6. He, just like Chickillo and Grant last year would land on the PS. But if he makes the team, that's awesome too.

Matak could become a decent backup for shazier given his smarts for the game and his motor but lets not make him a future stater, he still lacks athleticism and that can't be changed

He's a better athlete than Fort and Johnson.

My question is if there is a serious cap savings by cutting Timmons now. If Williams is the future and isn't a serious drop off and dirty red, Fort and Johnson are capable backups can that salary be unloaded now with the eye to grabbing a corner or something on cuts.
