Chargers release Mettenberger; claimed by Steelers

Gradkowski was placed on IR he is done for the season. He never threw a pass in the regular season for the Steelers thank god.

I figured this much and posted on another thread not to trade for a QB because he and several others were on the bubble. I'd put a claim in on him, IR Bruce, and ride the first part of the season as Landry Jones as the backup. Mettenberger likely stays there this year but this gives as a young reasonably priced back up next year.
Again I like the move. I think he fits the system, is young, pushes Jones, and feel he can at the very least be the cheap alternative to signing Jones next year to being Roethlisberger back up.

He may have not thrown one for, but he sure has thrown one against the steelers. Good to have a replacement now and hope he knocks Laundry out of contention.

Salute the nation

I believe she does. We are having a get together in a few weeks. I will find out some details and try to share.

Gradkowski's injury was unbelievable. I've nevery seen a more gentle landing cause a season ender. Kids on my Peewee team get hit harder than that every night. And there was no twist or awkwardness to his legs. He dove forward and the guy hit his leg. But not really hard. Weird.

I'd assume getting old will do that. The guy is QB in pro football. There is in no way he can be that out of shape

remember that leftwich injury after he scored a rushing TD? he broke his shoulder falling in the end zone, without being tackled.
Yeah, we sure know how to pick them

Hey, **** happens. Look at Bridgewater and his non contact knee injury. That is just the way it goes sometimes.

0-10 as a starter with the Titans.

I don't know this guys history or potential but he's got the size and some decent stats behind him. From what I see he's average or a little better with some game experience and has a decent completion %age. Best quote I saw is.....

It's hard to know what to expect from Mettenberger after the Titans and Chargers both moved on from him,

Best of luck kid, looks like you may need it.

I'm told Landry Jones is expected to retain the No. 2 job. For all the flak Jones gets for past uneven play, he's still better than some primary backups around the league. He was slinging it Friday against the New Orleans Saints, completing 19-of-22 passes for 206 yards and a touchdown.

I'd be alright with signing him to be #3. Other teams should be interested also. Giants and Bengals also put eaiver claims back in May but was awarded to Chargers.

We saw him in 2014. Mettenberger was 15 of 24 passes for 263 yards with two touchdowns, including an 80-yarder to Nate Washington.

With our OL and skill players, he could do a bit better. One major red flag, he's 0-10 as the starting QB.

yeap, but that was on a ****** team and we don't want him to start. He has time to learn and improve

Mettenberger has the tools, but I think and heard he's not one to hit the books and work as hard as he needs to. Is he better than Landy Jones? On our team I'd say yes.

So does this mean we keep 3 QB's this season? Likely.

yeap and knowing that Landry is in his final year is not bad to have some competition there

We are keeping Three because they like to keep 3. I don't think Zach is better right now. Give him a full off-season and they can battle it out next off-season.

The thing is I wouldn't hand him the #3 spot. His knock on him is drive and work ethic. I would let him know he's not going on the PS so he either shows enough to make the 53 man or have fun trying to catch on to your 4th team in a short few months. I think if he'd push himself he'd take of the #2 spot not too long into the season but I don't want him to be not motivated and sit at #3 and collect his check.

Nothing more than a long term insurance policy.

He WILL hold clipboard IF he even makes the team, no way he takes over Landry's spot as the number 2 this year.

Landry is in a contract year and may not be back next year (hold applause until he is not signed) and since Mettenberger was claimed off waivers he should still have 2 cheap years on his contact. This is an ideal landing spot for him as he will have a year to learn the system before he is called upon to actually compete for a backup spot. Any situation that puts him on the field this season means our season is likely already over. A contingency plan with some upside and ineffective previous starting experience.

I like him better than Bryn, Gradkowski, Vick, etc. but he is going to have to apply himself if he is to stick around for more than a cup of coffee

Perhaps the most meaningless stat in football, and somehwhat meaningless for pitchers also.

I would argue one of the most important stats for a starting QB. If he gets wins I don't give a crap how he gets there. Yeah, there are other factors, but being a winner is very important

Um...at the risk of being that guy. We relied on the 3rd QB last year, 2008, 2009, and 2012. Off the top of my head. I pray Ben stays healthy for the whole season and we only need Landrysucks and Mettenberger to be headset jockeys, but history shows we NEED a reliable backup who can win 2-3 games a year in the 2nd and 3rd QB spots. Next man up!

If he had thrown several TDs and few ints in those games, I might agree. Considering he threw 2 less TDs (12) in 14 games played than int's (14), there is a little more meaning.
