He has a "significant" hyper extended shoulder. It's something he's suppose to play through the season with it...in other words he'll have to manage it.

He is key to locking that right side down, he's been awesome. Unlike Mike Adams he has improved greatly, should've been a pro - bowler last year. He's a top 5 right tackle right now....

He might miss time, who do we have behind him? I hope we don't think we can March into stadiums with someone like Hubbard and thinking Ben won't take hits. We need a veteran plan B in place before the start of the season.

Cam Heyward should be ok as long as he doesn't rush back and end up missing even more time.

It's his elbow , not shoulder unless they changed something. He said he's playing Monday night. Seemed adamant about it in his interview.

We have a veteran plan B, he came from the Broncos.

Not bad for a washed up, no depth, TEAM. J/K

The STEELERS have more depth than given credit for. We are hurting in a few positions but then name me a team who doesn't???

STEELERS for LIFE

"Right tackle Marcus Gilbert was forced out of the game with an elbow injury that he described as “significant” on Sunday. Gilbert said that he’s heading for a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews, but that he plans on being on the field for the season opener even if he’ll be playing through pain.

“I’ll be there no matter what,” Gilbert said, via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “If I have to wrap my arm up, it doesn’t matter. There’s no way I’m missing that first game. It’s not going to be something that’s going to keep me off the field. I’m going to rehab the [heck] out of it. It will be good for the first game of the season.”

A hyperextension of the elbow one of the least significant injuries you can hope for. There is some stretching to his tendons, but as long as the muscles weren't torn (which they usually aren't), he should be able to play pretty quickly. However, there is no way I put him into a meaningless 4th preseason game. Give him a full 2 1/2 weeks to rest before Monday night.

Heyward worries me. High ankle sprains are legit. They are nagging and they reduce performance. If it's a high sprain, it's usually 6-8 weeks for a full recovery. Any rushing back before then, and you will see him as a less explosive, slower player. The problem with his injury, is Hayward is the cornerstone of our new D. He forces the pressures, he leads us in sacks, and he's a leader. If he misses any time, the play of our defense, as a whole, will suffer, unless someone else steps up. If Shazier is the LB from the 49ers game, we won't have to worry as much about Heyward's absence.

If I were the coach, and his sprain is significant, I'd have Heyward sit for September. Get through the terrible NFC east teams and bring him back for the games that matter vs the AFC. Remember, with injuries, it is always better to have them early in the season, where the player can fully recover, than late, where the player will miss the playoffs.

Sounds like Gilbert will be able to play. He's got two full weeks now to get ready. He may need a clean up operation after the season but he should be able to play with it wrapped or in a brace or whatever this year.

The high ankle sprain is no joke. Those usually take a month or so before they are fully healed, sometimes longer. I think Heyward is just going to play through the pain and we have to hope he doesn't aggravate it further.

Welcome to football season. Hope that injuries are minimized this year.

High ankle sprains affect different positions differently. Cam is a tough sob . He will be okay

Depends on the grade, and we haven't heard much about that. Low Grade 1 sprain and he could be back at practice in 10 days.

A 2nd opinion usually means the first one was bad news. The Steelers should be ready to roll with the Ryan Harris at right tackle for the opener. No point in playing Gilbert injured if there's a chance of making the situation worse.

I just wish we had a better blocking Tight End to help in situations like this.

“There's no way I am missing that first game,” right tackle Marcus Gilbert said a few hours later.

Gilbert sustained a hyperextended left elbow that was examined by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews and perhaps might be in need of surgery after the season.

Neither player is expected to play in the preseason finale Thursday at Carolina, but that likely would have been the case regardless, as veterans rarely play in the fourth preseason game.

With more than two weeks to go before the games count — and Heyward even noted the extra day of healing with the opener coming on a Monday night — Gilbert and Heyward maintain they won't miss regular-season action.

“(The injury) is significant, but I'm going to have to push through it,” Gilbert said. “It's something that I can play through.”

Gilbert did not practice Sunday and characterized himself as “day to day.”

A sixth-year veteran, Gilbert is coming off his best season, having started all 18 games (including playoffs).

“I need a chance to heal and rehab, and do what I need to do to get myself back on the field,” Gilbert said. “I'm just going to take it slow and rehab the (heck) out of it and just hope it's good. And it will be good for the first game of the season.”

Gilbert said he hasn't heard back from Dr. Andrews about possible long-term treatment.

At least the Steelers have a veteran backup behind Gilbert, though there will be a drop off. I'm worried about Heyward, I can't remember a high ankle sprain that hasn't lingered.

Depends on the grade, and we haven't heard much about that. Low Grade 1 sprain and he could be back at practice in 10 days.

When you weigh close to 300lbs and put 500lbs of torque on it, even low grade high ankle sprains are problematic, and nagging.

One player who is expected to play is right tackle Marcus Gilbert, who hyperextended his left elbow against the New Orleans Saints last week.
