Steelers sign Vince Williams to a three year extension. Writing on the way for Timmons.

Even without numbers I'll say this is a solid signing. Vince is a good back up that will pretty seemlessly move into a starter role. Glad to see them keep a guy who has grown as a player instead of him cutting his teeth here and off to somewhere else for his most productive years.

Good move my the front office. Hopefully the numbers are good also.

This is a good idea. Timmons will likely be gone after this season. Hopefully the ginger head from Temple will pan out for depth as well.

BTW, when I saw the headline I thought it was gonna say D Will was signed for 3 years and I was gonna be like, why sign a 33 y/o back to 3 more years?????????????????????

Williams is a real nice player. He may not be at the same level as Timmons at his best, but he'll fit in well next to Shazier. Glad that he'll be around for a few more years.

Solid signing. I would like to see a few more....

I wonder whose idea it was?? Butler evaluating talent and pushing forward or Mike T. Acknowledging great back up / starting talent?? Just curious as to who may have promoted this signing.

Glad it happened as Vince brings the "BAM"

It was the team's idea to resign a productive player on the cheap.

Why isn't it a team decision

So even though Golson is hurt, he would get a vote??? I was just wondering who promoted it. NOT everyone on the team said all at once, LET's sign Vince to a 3 year deal. It can be a TEAM decision, but more than likely not. I'd gues it was a contingency of many, including the two coaches I mentioned. But who was the initial promoter?? Maybe it was Vince's agent..... VERY possible.

I mean maybe it's something they all discussed. Weighing their options type of thing. Do we want to sign Timmons or go with Vince. Vince is cheaper younger and we would save money so we can sign so and so type of sit down

I'm thinking Williams and Fort to split time next year when Timmons is gone

I'm sure they all discussed it. I know it's not important as to who the initial promoter was, but someone initially had to bring it up. If Butler was the one then cudos to him, or whomever it was. WAS just a curiosity.

From previous discussions on the board, the idea that the HC/FO would consult with a 50+ year veteran DC was ridiculed and those two were shoving crappy players down said DC's throat. The DC who stuck around for 8 years being treated like **** (apparently) and ignored on personnel decisions knowing he could (and did) get a job instantly after leaving.

The idea they would discuss it with a 2nd year DC. Well, that is just ******* nuts!

The reality is if you want to keep AB and Bell, Timmons needs to move on.

Timmons cap number this year is something like 15 million for the season. While I think Timmons was a very good player for us ( good enough for top 50 of all time ), he's not worth the last contract the Steelers offered.

As for Vince, I like him vs the run in the box, but think he's a tad slow for the nickel.

His dollar amount is $15M because they pushed that cap hit back to open up for cap space. He's making a little over half of that number at $8M. I understand the concern by giving a player over 30 another deal. Its still possible they work something out with him but it looks unlikely.

I do think the Steelers can run a solid system that doesn't exploit Williams lack of speed too much. I'm pleased with this signing

I love the move. I think we can all agree this is probably Timmons last year in Pittsburgh, and I feel much better knowing Vince is locked up. Now let's just get DeCastro and Brown on board for the long haul.

Yes, they can. Williams is a bit of a poor man's Kirkland, and that's not a bad thing at all. He can blow up the run in the box! But he's a little slow and below average in coverage. I actually think rookie Tyler Matakevich is better in coverage.

We play nickel and dime more often and Williams doesn't have a role here.

I'll grade this move as follows. He's not as good as Timmons, but much cheaper. How we spend the additional cap space here remains to be seen.

Based off of what exactly?
