Headaches, not ankle injury, sidelining Ladarius Green

LATROBE, Pennsylvania -- The Steelers made just one splashy -- and much-needed -- free agent signing this past offseason, tight end Ladarius Green. They have yet to see him in their offense, though, and a member of the organization, informed of the player's health, said it has nothing to do with the tight end's surgically-repaired ankle -- but is instead an issue with recurring headaches.

Green signed a four-year, $20-million contract in March, which included a $4.75 million signing bonus, but he has yet to practice one play.

His ankle surgery in January ostensibly kept him out of spring practices and minicamp and he's spent the entirety of training camp on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has maintained that Green's sustained absence from the field is not entirely unexpected, and he reiterated that Wednesday, as he readied his team for its preseason opener Friday against the Lions.

"He's progressing, but we really thought it would be touch-and-go up to this point," Tomlin said. "The (ankle) surgery was not a routine cleanup, so we knew it would be a significant amount of time."

Green's agent, Adisi Bakara, however, immediately said, "His ankle is fine," when reached Wednesday night. Bakara would not comment on what is ultimately keeping Green sidelined, and his client has reportedly been seen running sprints at St. Vincent's College, while his teammates practice.

Green, then a member of the Chargers, complained of headaches after suffering two concussions in two weeks last September, according to a report in the San Diego Union-Tribune. Those were his second and third concussions in less than one calendar year. Green sat out one game last season due to a concussion, while ankle issues sidelined him for two others. A concussion also caused Green to miss one game during the 2014 season.

Green was expected to help alleviate the hole left at tight end after the retirement of Heath Miller. It was Miller who was Ben Roethlisberger's security blanket, one of his most dependable targets -- and blockers -- for 11 seasons. Miller missed only eight games in those 11 years, and retired as the Steelers' tight end with the most all-time receiving yards, receptions and touchdowns.

SHHHiillllbutt, what the hell???? Did anybody know of this before the signing??? I didn't and sure would have been more cautionary to that fact. I wonder if Ladarious said anything like "Sure I'll take the guaranteed money, up front in one payment please"

Salute the nation

That is the eelephant in the room regarding AB. He is at more risk for a 2nd afterhaving his 1st.

Actually not. The latest data tends to show that if sufficient time occurs after the concussion, you are no more likely then before the first. The problem is when you are in a vulnerable state prior to recovery from the first one. Which sounds like what happened with Greene. Then you get the headache syndrome. I can't believe this was not addressed in FA. I'd rather have a lesser talent that can play and build chemistry than a guy with a injury that could linger for god knows how long. ****** brutal.

If he STILL has headaches from last years dings, he is toast. Not good.

I have to first question what type of medical evaluation the Steelers gave Green and then the history of his symptoms. But looking at this situation, if he is having headaches nearly a year later, that is not good for his ability to get back on the field. More importantly, you hope the guy doesn't have any major problems functioning in life.

We only need to look at what transpired with Sidney Crosby and his 2 concussions to see what we MIGHT be up against w Green, IMO.

Sid suffered 2 concussions within a week and wasn't cleared to return for ELEVEN months. After giving it a go after the 11 months, his headaches returned after 8 games and he had to sit another 3 months!

While I know SOME players are straight up sissies and will use excuses to stay out of the game (especially after they have been paid) I hope he's NOT one of them. Sid certainly wasn't and the wait was worth it!

He might never play a down for us. Good job there Colbert. I guess that means more playing time for Jessie James. Good.

.

To me this smaks of hedging your career with concussion issues. In the wake of all the talk the movie the protocols, Jr. Seau. What a better way to ensure you have grounds for a lawsuit later. Sounds to me like the Steelers are afraid to touch him now. Bring him back too soon,, its their fault he had a concussion and the amount Is bigger etc.

I'm not an expert nor do I claim to be.

Head aches over a year later ? Please. Never mentioned the fact he was having lingering headaches at his signing? If I were the F/O I would use that or whatever I could to get rid of the guy now. And call owen Daniels .

Cut him and sue for the signing bonus back. Unless our medical staff was too stupid to ask about his past concussions and if he was still having any ill effects from them. That I'd assume would be standard and if he didn't disclose the headaches then I'd say his contract is null and void. Sucks because we could have used that cash on a CB or Safety but I'm ok with riding with the outlaw and signing a cheap vet for the season.

Green said he had sinus issues. Weather can have a big effect. Hot, High humidity, a rural camp setting with different pollen than he'd be used too in Cali and it could just be sinus problems. It can make you feel dizzy or have pressure headaches.

Get this guy some Claritin and a neit pot, and a cpap, then see if he feels better.

I've been wondering if we get a "refund" if we brought a bad piece of fruit??? Seems like the Steelers' should get some sort of "refund" if he can't ever play again...

If the first preseason game is any indicator, the situation at tight end is pretty dire. Johnson was getting a significant amount of time with the "first team" because of his blocking. I know some here are high on James, but I think his upside is a decent No. 2 at best. He is still an average receiver and below average blocker at this point. Green wasn't going to offer much in the blocking department compared to Miller, but at least you knew you were going to draw a defender.

New England bought bad goods and injury settlement gave up a bunch of the bonus money. I hope the Steelers learned from that and have verbiage in the contract about disclosing health information during the physical.
