All time 1st, 2nd and 3rd Steeler teams since 1970 as voted by the posters




All time Steeler team voted by the fans since 1970. In some cases when the votes are close on defense, I moved a player to his natural position, splitting up a 3-4 defense and the 4-3 defense. It's not perfect, but here are the votes by the fans who participated.

I'd match our first team vs ANY in NFL history.

Right, the dude the iced the outside of the field in a playoff game vs the Raiders, severely limiting Oakland' speed on the outside. I think he moved to New England a long ago.

We could add more to this. A head coaching poll, and the OC's and DC's.

OLB - Greene -Some good make a argument with him over Lloyd team 2.
ILB - Farrior -some argument that he could have leaped frogged Kirkland. I just liked Kirkland a little more in his prime.

OLB - Gildon- A valid argument that he deserves higher, as his production was team one caliber.
CB - Townsend
SS - Clark
FS - Perry
CB - Taylor

I never saw Ham, I know he is probably the best all around OLB in history, but in the 70's he didn't have to rush the passer much did he? in a 3-4 the OLB have to rush the passer, how would he have done in that role, just curious?

just started recording stats in his last year.............. but per Wiki
Ham's career statistics include 25 sacks, 21 fumbles recovered, and 32 interceptions[1] (although the sack numbers are unofficial since the NFL did not begin recording sacks until Ham's final year in the league, so he officially has just three sacks).[5][6] As these numbers indicate, Ham had a flair for the big play, guided by some of the best football instincts ever found in a linebacker. Ham was a member of four Super Bowl winning teams during his twelve-year career (although he did not play in Super Bowl XIV due to an ankle injury), all of it spent with the Steelers.[1][2] His 53 takeaways are the most in NFL history by a non-defensive back.

It is pretty remarkable that the Steelers could lineup an all-time 4-3 and 3-4 defense and no one could even question it.

The linebacker blitz from a 4-3 defense in Ham's time was a rarity. However when he was asked to do it, Hamm had a high success rate.

Ham game was built upon unusual quickness, anticipation, and timing.

The Steelers said he was their fastest player in the first ten yards.

Ham could do it all. Rush the passer, cover well, force turnovers, recover fumbles ,and tackle extremely well. You could argue Ham was the most versatile of all the great linebackers. Jack Lambert considers Ham better than he was.
 
Ham was Steelers' best all-around LB ever, hands down.

You could go to a game and be entertained just by watching how he played. He was all over the place.

Lambert, Lloyd, Harrison were flashier because of their sacks, and QB pressures. But Ham was the master.
 
Jack Ham was such a great player for all the reasons Coach stated. My favorite Ham play was in the 1974 AFCC, it was 10-10. He baits Kenny Stabler into an interception and he takes it down to around the 9. Bradshaw throws it to Swann for the TD, the Steelers go up 17-10, the rest is history.

One of the best things about Ham was that after he made that play, a play like that in the AFCC game for a team that never won anything, he...just hands the ball to the referee. And today you have guys acting like ***** after making a 5 yard catch in a September game.

Another great play in that game is after the Steelers go up 17-10, the Raiders put together a little drive. Stabler hits Branch over the middle and he is running free. Lambert is backpedaling and makes a great open field tackle on Branch deep in Steeler territory, but Oakland can't punch it in and has to settle for the FG. Great, great play, kind of reminiscent of Ben's tackle on the DB for the Colts. Which at the same time makes you realize how great Ben's play was, because Lambert was paid to tackle.
