I can name the starter and backups now. I watch every game. I lose sleep when we lose.
When I was 10 and 11, I could only name hlaf of the starters and cried when they lost.

it is easy to be a fan of the local team....it takes more effort (especially back in the dark ages before the internet) to be a good fan of a team 1200 miles away.....
I'm cool with everyone no matter where you're from or at. If you chose to be a Steelers fan, let's ride. Get some merchandise/gear, read some trust worthy news articles about the Steelers prior to the season/games, and then get your game on. If you dont have access like others folks to the games or ESPN/NFL Network that's fine. I run into Steelers fans down here whose parents were fans from the 70's and they followed their parents/relatives lead. Some of them wait to catch the Nationally televised games on Sunday or Monday night.
You chose to be a fan. A couples of years ago I was sitting in church listening to the Pastor telling the congregation that when a person moves to another city he or she should leave their teams allegiance behind and follow the local teams now. I couldn't believe he said that but he was part of that Old School crowd of sports fans who frowned on all the transplants moving to Georgia. Plus I can't stand the Atlanta Braves! I knew that wasn't about to happen.
By that mentalityI would have had to have been a Broncos, Raiders, 9ers, Rams, Texans. NO THANK YOU

Turned on the TV and everything had to be Steelers after that............ I was born to be a Steeler fan........

I still heavily support and follow my Western Pa. Pro/College teams but as time went on after moving here I became a casual fan of Georgia, Georgia Tech (except for when they play PITT) and Ohio State. SEC Conference football fans are nutty and dangerous when they start arguing about their Teams. ACC Conference basketball fans (some of them) can be annoying at times and the former players turned ESPN game analyst seem to be unfriendly towards the new ACC teams.

If anyone thinks I need their permission to call myself a fan, or demands that I pass some kind of team knowledge test before doing so, they can suck my dick.

No, you don't have to be born in Pgh to be a Steeler fan.
But it helps to make a home game, hang downtown on a Sunday, and then you realize how awesome Steeler experience is.
There is a range of fan from casual and low key to insane. I'm pretty sure if a casual fan watched me during a game they would think I was ridiculous. I can't really say that I even really enjoy the games in a sense. I certainly enjoy them in retrospect when they win. I enjoy the whole week after a win. But a loss is a complete downer. Every year I say I'm going to try to relax and be more casual about it. I simply cannot. If you want to call yourself a fan. You're a fan. I sometimes listen to people speak about the game of football. And clearly they know very little about it. They still enjoy so really, none of my buisnatch.
No, awesome is pulling into the parking lot of your home town team and seeing a sea of Steelers flags and Black and Gold everything.....1200 miles away from Pittsburgh. Walking into the stadium surrounded by fellow Steelers fans and seeing the other teams "home" field over run with Terrible Towels. Watching the "home" team QB having to use a silent count because the Steeler fans are just too ******* loud for him.....
I hear ya Boot, especially since I might know more about the team than I actually remember at time I want to remember it. Sometimes I can forget to remember things that are really important in my life, let alone things that I only enjoy.

I think a lot of us that live outside of Pgh can relate to that. Anytime they are in AZ the Steeler fans are everywhere.
I still see more Steeler stickers on vehicles than I do Cardinal, even with their recent improvement.

The audacity of the OP stating the need to remember every players name, in order to be a "TRUE" Steelers fan, is ridiculous. There is a HELL of a lot more or less to being a fan than memory. Slight fan to full blown fan is something that only the individual can determine. How far each one is willing to go is entirely up to the individual. Some lay back while others get crazy and does that mean one is less than the other??? Some choose less expression than others. How about the STEELERS way? Hard working team of the seventies??? If one portrays that characteristic are they considered the "FAN" ?? I think one can have low keyed personality / knowledge / along with how they present & handle themselves as representatives of OUR team, makes them a fan. Having all the knowledge in the world does no good if you come off as a know it all son of *****. Who wants that representing our STEELERS ??? I'll take a decent, hard working, somewhat knowledgeable, clean humored representative as a "TRUE FAN" any day over a name memory guy with questionable behavior. There are also those who mascaraed as fans, sometimes for multiple teams. Is it because they are trying to fit in, set someone up, just need the love, who knows. Those people can be true fans too, like a chameleon per say. My QUESTION would be, Why would one need to question somebody else's fandom other than to make themselves feel better about themselves ?? Is it to justify there behavior to look down on a fellow "FAN" ...................

We had flank steak a couple of nights ago, too, on the grill, marinated in Italian dressing, served with rice and fresh green beans, and Columbia 1905 salad.
