Yea, the writer claimed Landry Jones is on the bubble....but before you get too excited, note that he grew up in OH and is a Cowboy's fan. In other words, he doesn't really KNOW the Steelers like most of us do.

The Steelers are SLOW to make a move like ditching Jones and adding some new QB, even though ALL INDICATIONS are to do just that, since Jones has virtually no upside and had the 2nd lowest QBR rating in the entire NFL.

You never know what QB can come out of the blue and turn into a real player. Tom Brady was a 6th round pick. And remember: You make zero shots that you do not take. If you don't constantly turn over stones to find players, you won't find any diamonds in the rough. So why not try to find a #3 QB who has a CHANCE at developing? Why keep a know piece of rubbish on the roster? Because you don't want to admit it was a bad draft pick?

As far as the other two mentioned: Ventrone and Spaeth. Ventrone is just too small, Spaeth is nearly 100% incompetent at catching the ball.

Neither will be missed at all. Turn over more stones, fellas. Don't get complacent. Or, maybe I should say stop being complacent. If Landry Jones is still on the roster come Sept, that will be the picture of incompetency.

Try to discover some young guy with upside. Leave no stone unturned.

This is the only guy in camp who could possibly win the #3 QB. He has size......not sure if anything else.

I don't know Pop. They won against a conference finalist with Jones. He played ok against the Chiefs who are very good at home. And I believe he pulled out the game against the Raiders thanks to AB. Good enough to keep a job in my books.

Yea, you're right about the Raider game. But he stunk the joint up in KC (16 out of 29 attempts, 209 yards, 55.2 completion %, 17.0 QBR - that's terrible)

He did play decent vs. AZ. I am just looking for someone with an upside, but I might as well not even bother thinking about it. With the Steelers, it's "Let it flow, let yourself go, slow and low that is the tempo."

I was at the Chiefs game. If Deangelo doesn't drop a routine and I mean routine pass for a TD they are right there in the end. And they had a lot of trouble dealing with the Chiefs outside pass rush.

Who do the Steelers have to compete with Jones? No one. He makes the team by default. Vetrone I think has a pretty good shot. There's not too much in front of him to worry aboout. I would put Shamarko on the bubble before Vetrone to be honest. Spaeth better watch his back because I see Green and James being #1 and #2 so if someone else shows some upside I could see Spaeth being out.

Because you don't want to admit it was a bad draft pick?

Still one of my favorite opinions. I want to risk my multi-million dollar franchise because I don't want to be embarrassed that my third string QB, a 4th round draft pick, is not as good as everyone else's starters. Sounds legit.

I do think Shamarko is on the bubble. ST's, IMO, kept him on the team and Freeney (sp?) could take that spot.

the FO didn't bring any real competition for the backup QB spot (unfortunately), Landry is staying

Spaeth is definitly a vet on the bubble

Landry Jones being cut after his rookie deal would even be harder to swallow that all the other previous 5th round QB busts Colbert seems to love and draft. Jones was a 3rd round pick (and I'm not arguing about the technicalities of picking Thomas AND Jones 2 picks away from each other and stating for a fact one was the traded 3rd rounder and one wasn't. If the team didn't want both so badly, they wouldn't have pulled off the trade).

Tee Martin, Brian St. Pierre, Omar Jacobs, Dennis Dixon... Landry Jones.

The question now is who do we take with our 4th/5th rounder next season as a wasted QB selection? Anyone want to bet we take a QB then? I might offer even up odds on that bet knowing Colbert....

Jones needs to study the playbook more. In a two week span he looked promising. I think he deserves one more season---if not, Ben isn't getting any younger

This is the only other QB I see in camp other than the other 3.

He is big, has a big arm. Played at a small school. If he has ANY potential, I'd keep him over Jones.

They were content to have Jones as the #2 QB this season if the draft played out and they had drafted one. I heard state this on the radio predraft. The reason they held off resigning Grad until after the draft.

Argue or don't argue, but, on this you are wrong. Jones is a 4th round pick. No one traded up to get him. No one. I know you like to think otherwise, but it is simply not true.

They have had Ben. When should they draft a QB? Higher or lower? And being that it isn't like 4th and 5ths consistently make big impacts, why is it wasted if they take a chance on a QB?

Laundry went from terrible to serviceable last year. If he improves to above average, I have no problem with him staying.

Ventrone has always been a bubble player. If some youth shows they can play special teams, then Ventrone may be gone. It sucks though, because that hair gives me fond memories of Polamalu!

If Spaeth doesn't make the team, it will be due to injury. He may be done.

There is no reason to get rid of Jones. I don't think he's anything more than a No. 3 QB, but his only competition is Gradkowski.

Ventrone is a bubble player, but is solid on special teams and with the team pretty thin at safety, a good bet to make it. I keep Ventrone for his special teams play over Thomas who hasn't been able to contribute anywhere.

Spaeth seems to be a lock given his ability as a blocker, especially with Miller gone. I don't expect much in that area from Green and James.

biggest guys on the bubble
Speath\
Thomas
Shuisham
Jones
Geathers

I thought I read somewhere that James is a decent blocker?

We will still be chasing a ring next year, regardless of what happens this season. That being the case, the top 4 picks won't be a QB. They will more likely go CB, OLB, OL, ILB depending.

You look at some of the qbs in the league and have to believe there has to be some people better. I think people are looking at physical traits too much. Guys like Doug flutie would not have seen an NFL field. Even a guy like montana who had a relatively weak arm might not have been looked at too high. I think accuracy and smarts should be rated way higher than firing the ball 100 mph and being 6'4 230.

I would suspect gradkowski is on the bubble this year as far as qbs go. He has the mental aspect of the game down however he could be released and is very likely to be still available later. He looks to be near the end of the line physically. I am not sure he has more than one or two games left before his arm goes. I would suspect that if the youngster they have looks to be more than a camp body he may take over as a third string qb. The rest of the guys folks are considering will depend on their play and ability to progress from where they are now. Many of the guys on the team might be replaced by better or younger and cheaper talent.
