And the legend Begins

I like Matakevich. He gets to the ball carrier aggressively. He looks like he has a pretty good shot in the NFL.

What worries me about Mata is that he's not a great athlete. You can be coach on the field all day long, but if you haven't got the quicks to get to the ball carrier at this level then what does it matter?

Chick will probably lose his spot to Feeney for this very reason. He's got the size advantage, no question. But Feeney just flat out has superior ability. Mata was taken late for a reason, he's got limited upside. Timmons is a good player, and I like him, but I think he's going to be very expensive next year. I'm all for finding his replacement, I just don't think Mata is the second coming of Zach Thomas.

That ability has to translate to the field.

Would you consider Foote athletic? He was good enough to get the job done.

I can't count how many athletes bombed out . Is Feeney a football player or a Steven Conley?

We can talk about potential all day long, but production has to rear its head.

I think the Steelers picked a nice blend of production and potential.

A slow LB might make up for that lack of speed with instincts and determination.

Just a wait and see. For a late round pick if Mata becomes a capable packup who is sound and is instinctive can make plays and be sound in his assignments. I would be happy....

Ok, 15 years ago I would agree with you. You could be a slow ILB back then. Teams still ran the ball and played hard D to win.

Now they spread you out, run their QB sideline to sideline or chuck strikes down the seam from the pocket. In today's NFL, Mata is obsolete. Yes, he'll fill the hole on dive plays. But how many of those will he see in a game? He'll get outrun, submarined, and plain old fashioned juked out of his shoes trying to chase the play east and west. I agree that Foote was a capable ILB, but he was never more than that: capable. Timmons is a play maker and Pro Bowl snub. If you're going to replace him, I'd just as soon do it with someone who's at least as good.

The other issue is special teams. Skinny or no, I fully expect Feeney to make the squad on special teams play alone. Mata won't have that saving grace to justify a roster spot. It also occurs to me that we're going to keep extra DBs because we want to give multiple players a chance to compete during the season. That means less roster spots for LBs. I think Chick ends up on the practice squad, Feeney makes the 53, and Mata ends up on his couch next to the phone. And if his coaches at Temple are to be believed, he'll be wearing a headset and slacks on the sideline in no time.

Maybe - I never said he was the "next" anything. Just watching him play.

You can be a height/weight/speed guy and not be able to play the game either. We have more than a few of those taking up space.

Obviously he wasn't signed in the 7th to be timmons substitute, that's shazier job, become the main ILB on the team. He was signed to substitute Vince Williams and be a decent a backup on run plays. If he can become more than that well even better but you have to keep real expectations

I DVR'd the Senior bowl from months ago and just watched the game - Sean Davis made the first play of the game a big one - a stuff tackle coming up and lifting a TE off his feet and planting him... Matakevich was making tackles all over the field! He looked good. Mayock was praising him for his nose for the ball instincts.

I knew I saved this game for a reason, got lucky a lot of our picks are playing. Good stuff

Reality sinks in---AGAIN...

Again, highlights and Senior Bowl footage don't tell the tale. Here's his Notre Dame tape from last year.

1st Quarter: Late in coverage, giving up first downs. Repeatedly BLOWN UP by blockers for big gains and a score. To close the quarter he has a big splash play, dropping the HB for 5 yards. But he was unblocked. His brain got him in position, but his body only succeeded because the blockers never accounted for him.

2nd Quarter: Bit hard on Kiser fake, who runs RIGHT THROUGH Tyler's zone for an 80 yard TD. Follows that up by missing the tackle on a screen play thrown right in front of him giving up another huge gain. Very nice heads up play for a pick, batted to him by the DB (who should have been flagged for PI).

3rd Quarter: Gets beat around the corner for a big 1st down. Blown up in the hole for a Kiser 1st down and on the VERY NEXT PLAY gets steamrolled by the QB for a 1st and Goal.

4th Quarter: In QB spy coverage, great job of breaking down and form tackling the QB on the late drive for no gain.

- He is smart, and he does know where to go. He just can't get there.

- When he does make a mistake, doesn't have the athleticism to make up and get back into the play.

- Most of his plays come when he is unaccounted for and/or unimpeded.

- He can't stone blockers, run down plays from the back side or keep up in coverage.

- Was run over by a quarterback who showed no fear of dropping the shoulder on him.

- In short, against big time competition he's too small, weak and slow. I love the kid's brain, but without a body to match it just doesn't work. If he's getting obliterated by Notre Dame's QB, what do you think is going to happen against 320lb linemen at this level?

Navy's QB is not a normal QB...he was much more effective as a runner than a passer.....

getting this thread back on track...back to discussing the future HOF pick

Demarcus Ayers can bring even more excitement to the Steelers' return game.

Shortly after the Steelers drafted Demarcus Ayres, the punt return specialist from Houston, in the seventh round, special teams coordinator Danny Smith sat in the media room at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex and went through a laundry list of what he looks for in a returner.

“I look at their hands, their quickness,” said Smith. “Do they muff? Are there fumbles? What’s their decision making? What’s their vision? What’s their ability to avoid? Do they break tackles? Are they fearless? Are they tough? Will they outrun coverage? Do they have touchdown speed? Are they sideline returners? Are they middle returners? Can they make cuts at full speed? Are they a must gather guy? Can they make the first guy miss? Do they only get what’s blocked? Do they have the ability to create? And I plus and minus all of those qualities. Then after I plus and minus those qualities, I reach a conclusion. That’s how I come up the list and rate.”

After he came up for air, he shared where he ranked Ayers with all the items on the list.

“This kid had more of those qualities as a punt returner than anyone else I evaluated,” said Smith.

Ayers was among those who heard what Smith had to say. And understandably, he liked it.

“To know he thinks that and wants to work with me to make me better, it gave me chills,” said Ayers, who is taking part in the Steelers three day rookie minicamp. “I am excited to work with him. I want to get in there and pick his brain. Maybe I can take some punt returns and kick returns to the house.

“Returning punts is something I have the talent to do, but I love doing it too. When I am back there I want to get the ball and make a play for the team. I have fun waiting to catch the ball, and when I catch the ball I have fun making a guy miss and making a play for my teammates. I have the talent to do it, but I also enjoy doing it.”

Ayers said there is an art to returning punts and you have to focus and then be ready to roll.

“I am back there seeing the way my teammates set up their blocks, where they will be to make a guy miss,” said Ayers. “Once you make that first person miss you make a move and have fun with it. I try to think make the first guy miss, make one cut and go.”

He will have the ability to learn from one of the best punt returners in the game in Antonio Brown, a player he has watched and admired.

“It’s going to be fun,” said Ayers. “He is probably going to get tired of me. I am going to try and learn everything possible from him. From punt returns, to understanding the schemes. He is a guy I am going to spend a lot of time with.

“What he has done in this league doesn’t go unnoticed. He is one of the hardest working guys on the team. That is the type of people I want to surround myself with.”

Coolie, the kid has all the right answers. I hope his work ethic is as good. Yes, hanging with AB will elevate most levels. Good luck to him and learn F-A-S-T !!!!!!

Salute the nation

The Fighting Irish are deeply offended by this statement.

Are you trying to say that all Golden Domes look the same?

And BTW Notre Dame's Kizer is very much a passing QB who can run.
