Steelers Release CB Cortez Allen

That's why I said keep eye on waiver wire AND add a young guy. I'd look at the Matt Flynn's, TJ Yate's of the world....some of those guys can't be as bad as Jones.

If you look at their production they are.

So as I'm reading Tibs post, they took the cap savings now because they are signing someone immediately and couldn't do it without cap relief now.

I think it is to sign the draft class without having to restructure anyone

With the cuts in the secondary so far, what's left in then cupboard?

Are they going to risk everything on the draft?

The draft class won't even be signed before June but even if some of the choices are signed they likely won't make up the top 52 contracts.

his contract is still "active" at http://overthecap.com/calculator/pittsburgh-steelers/ if you wanted to see what the differences are between the cut this year and the June 1st cut. You can play around with his contract if you want to gain a greater understanding of the difference in the moves.

I think the total cost of the draft class after displacement is going to be something around 1.9-2.1 million(although I'm not sure when it goes from rule of 51 to 53) so we can already fit them in with what space we have(approx 3.3m after Allen's cut is processed)

Well I think they are banking on Golson being able to contribute something this year, so that would be one thing they didn't have going for them last year. They re-signed Cockrell and Gay also. Evidently they didn't feel like the rest were worth keeping around.

STUPID, STUPID, STUPID, if they didn't designate him post June 1st. Saving $1.7 million now as to what will be gained in a few months this year and next year makes zero sense.

The Cortez Allen contract reeked of desperation. I was against the new deal. He wasn't proven at all. Look what the Steelers gave him, and look what they gave Gay. Makes perfect sense!

At the point of the signing, he had shown exactly as much (with more int potential) as Keenan Lewis which gets everyone's panties in a bunch that he was let go.

Finally! Don't let the door hit your *** on the way out!

Someone bring me that game tape from 2004...

because a 6th or 7th round QB is going to have the impact of Big Ben did coming off a round one top 15 selection.

You are selling, I am just not buying.

Well, Atleast the dude gave a pretty classy farewell.

Not how it works.

If he's NOT a post June 1 cut, his dead money will be:
2016 - 4.05m (saves 1.7m)
2017 - 2.7m (saves 2.95m)
2018 - 1.35m (saves 4.3m)

If he's designated a post June 1 cut, his dead money is
2016 - 1.35m (saves 4.4m)
2017 - 1.35m (saves 4.3m)
2018 - 1.35m (saves 4.3m)

It would be a dumb move to not designate him a post June 1st cut, REALLY dumb.

This is not how cap dollars work. Both pre and post dead money options have to equal the same amount of dollars over the remaining years. Pre just puts more dead money early freeing up more money later.

This is $8m vs $4m. Dead money doesn't magically disappear, and $4m is unaccounted for.

It's too bad what happened to this kid, injuries or something else. I really felt it was the right move when the Steelers made it. I know som where upset they let Keenan Lewis walk and signed Cortez, but at the point at which it was done, Lewis had, what, 1 pick throughout his time in Pittsburgh? Cortez seemed to have a nose for the ball. The defense desperately needed that.

It didn't work out, but I am not going to rip them for it. I would have done the same thing.

I found where you got your numbers. No matter what, pre or post cut, his salary is gone. No salary dollars would ever count in any instance if the player is cut. Only pro rated signing bonus. http://overthecap.com/player/cortez-allen/1588/

His pro rated signing bonuses are $1.35M for 16, 17, & 18 = $4.05M total. This is the only dead money that can ever count against the Steelers, since the salaries are not guaranteed.

The Steelers elected to take the $4.05M total this year and it freed up $1.745M This is where the article gets it number for $1.7M in cap savings. This means 17 & 18 dead money for Cortez is reduced to zero. He's off the books after this year.

Post June 1st spreads out that $4.05M over multiple years. You still have to account for the same dollars.

Sometimes doing a little math can help understand why Omar would chose to take the hit this year. The FO is not as stupid as some of us might think.

I liked the kid but honestly for future contracts or drafting purposes the FO should value more a CB that stays with the receiver and denies the catch even if he doesn't get many pics than one that has a lot of pics but with little playing time to prove it wasn't just a fluke (bad throws, deflected passes, etc)

I also figured out why the numbers are reflected that way on his page. It's the pre and post June 1st designation for that year only in question. I.E. if he was cut in 17', the 17' numbers would apply. Same for the 18' season. These are not cumulative savings for cutting a player this year.

Though here are the total dollars the Steelers have saved by cutting Cortez:

16 $1.745M
17 $5.65M
18 $5.65M

Just another way to view dead money vs savings.

at least the back end of that deal was non guaranteed

In less opportunities, Allen had done as much in most cases and shown more in int ability than Lewis, IMO. After 4 years, Lewis had his only full season had 29 PD and 0 int. That was the best he had shown. Prior years, I think, were not close. In 4 years, he had barely more PD than Allen had in 3 and that is with having 29 in one year. IMO, the FO chose who seemed to be able to cover and could create TO.

OK, THAT'S how I thought it worked. Then I stand by my original statement, I'm glad they didn't designate it post June 1st. Take all the hit now and be done with it.

I honestly hope it's NOT designated a post June 1st cut. I'm tired of pushing dead money into future seasons. Bite the bullet and move on.

I have to believe he is a post June 1st cut. Its purely a money move to make room for rookie signings and have some possible space to pick up any cast offs that look promising after the preseason cuts. Fingers crossed!

Ok...just saw Copes post and that makes more sense. Either way he is gone and we can move on with a new look. Anything has to be better than our no cover zone from last year.

Pretty obvious we're trying to keep the dead money off next year when Bell, Brown(extension) and DeCastro are due.

On to the draft and maybe redo a deal if money is needed to patch up with cast offs or post draft free agent or 2.

Keeping the dead money off next year is wise for long term future of team and if we can get by without extending Timmy this year that should help next years cap number as well.
