The Pittsburgh Steelers parted ways with a former fourth-round draft pick on Friday as cornerback Cortez Allen was released.

Developing story.

Allen, what was drafted by the Steelers in 2011 out of the Citadel, signed a four year contract extension worth $24.6 million just prior to the start of the 2014 season. Since then, he’s only started 7 games and ended both of the last two seasons on the team’s Reserve/Injured list.

The Steelers will save $1.7 million in cap space this year prior to roster displacement if Allen was not designated as a post June 1 release. If, however, he was designated as a post June 1 release, the Steelers will save $4.4 million against this year’s salary cap after June 1 with a dead money charge of $2.7 million carrying over to 2017.

There was a report a few weeks ago that the Steelers asked Allen to take a pay cut this year but that obviously did not take place.

During his five seasons with the Steelers, Allen recorded 168 total tackles, 6 interceptions and 3 forced fumbles.

One dead weight down.......

Sham not so wow Thomas next ?

It looks like he didn't accept the paycut. Goodbye
That's money we could have used in a vet DB, that's the only complain I have. They better draft CB early on

Let's not skip over LANDRY JONES, please...

"Landry", "Landry Jones", "Yes, Landry, please come to the Front Office"...

and who with experience would be left to back up BIg Ben ?

Does anyone know if the timing of his release was contingent on him being able to pass a physical? Was wondering why it took us this long to make the move.

Some team will def give him a look...maybe Tenn?

I hope he is a June 1 cut? Makes no sense to lose $3 million extra for him this year if they didn't designate him June 1st. Seems dumb to me. I hope there is a good reason if they did it now and it isn't signing their draft picks.

he might be designated a post june 1st cut. They just released him ahead so he can search for a new team

In all honesty, we had Vick and Jones as our back ups last season (after Bruce was hurt).

We can't really do much worse. Watch the waiver wire. Sign a late or undrafted kid. Jones did get a little better last season, but he still sucks in a big way.

you don't want a rookie jumping in with a SB caliber team....

I would rather pick up a experienced vet......

I'll be honest: This guy sucks so bad I never even factor him into our "state of DBs" when thinking about it. I assumed he was gone even when he wasn't. **** happens in life and sports. Suddenly a kicker can't make any kicks, after years of being top shelf (Vanderjagt). A goalie all of a sudden can't stop a puck traveling 3 MPH. (See Fleury in post season). A pitcher all of a sudden can't stop hanging a softball across the plate. Allen hit one of these types of patches and may suck from here on out.

That's why I said keep eye on waiver wire AND add a young guy. I'd look at the Matt Flynn's, TJ Yate's of the world....some of those guys can't be as bad as Jones.

Can we play God bless America in here and all stand and sing.... don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya.

From what I can tell, it was all about his knee.

Even for people like me who were open to the idea of bringing him to training camp, Allen had dissolved into nothing more than a dart throw. A hope that somehow, his knee could make it through camp, showing just enough to let him slip onto the roster. For all the problems he had, it was health that seems to be the catalyst to his release.
