We need a capologist

There really aren't June 1st cuts anymore because guys can be designated as a June 1st cut and released in the early part of the offseason. Any player added would be someone like Boykin who is available for trade at a low cost. Or a veteran with a larger salary who looks mediocre in camp and won't take a paycut. Or a guy like Cockrell that we kinda liked in scouting who fell out of favor with his current team.

DeCastro's salary this year is substantial enough that they can work on a long term deal for him without making any other moves.

I'm sure they have decided what they'll feel comfortable with paying Timmons(4 years, 25M with 10M SB?) and any salary move made with him will lower his cap #.

Antonio will likely get another 1 year patch done to his contract to adjust for his performance. This likely won't increase his cap hit this year.

Bell is the biggest question now. What do the think the market for him is? Are they going to offer him around 8-9M/year on a 4 year extension? If so they'll have to get about 3-4M from somewhere but they can always restructure Ben.

Wheaton also might be worth a new deal if he would settle for 5-6M/year. To do that, they would need to free up something around 2M more in cap space.

Anyways we're actually pretty fine IMO regardless of what other teams are looking like cap wise. If you have a lot of good veteran players, you won't have a ton of cap space.

Next offseason they'll have to work on new deals for Brown and could consider extending Tuitt but many of the other core guys will have already been taken care of.

...

agree but some players get released after june 1st because not necessarily other teams will release them earlier, like the Steelers do.
Which bring us to Cortez Allen, the guy is getting a final chance to make the team in training camp or he would already be released

I spoke with TMC, this was his take:

"The Steelers are not likely to make many cuts right now. No reason to do so. While many will point towards Cortez Allen, Suisham, or others, they just don't have a reason to release anyone. The Steelers will probably approach Timmons and DeCastro with extensions and can easily free up $4 million each with those deals. While people freak out about Timmons $15 million cap hit, over $6 million is sunk, cannot change it, so it should not be part of the evaluation. You have $8.75 million in salary, that is what you evaluate. I can see a 3-4 year extension, much like they did Troy, convert $8M of that salary to signing bonus, pay him $1 million in salary, add 3 years, put the salary those years in the $6M a year range. That would give you $5 million in cap space this year and his numbers over the next 4 would be: $3M, $8M, $8M, $8M. That is relatively cheap for a veteran linebacker.
DeCastro would probably come in close to Pouncey, still can save $4 million a season. If the Steelers wanted to create cap space, they had roster bonuses for Pouncey and Heyward that could have opened about $6 million by turning them to signing bonuses. They did not, so they are not looking to create space right now, probably no expensive piece they want to add.

As for the secondary, who is there at safety? Whitner? Nelson? Thurmond? Allen? Meh. They can wait until after the draft. At corner, there is Hall, Finnegan, Cromartie, and a host of JAGs.

I think that the Steelers believe Gay and Mitchell are better than average. Golson will have a role. I think Allen is still in the mix. If he wasn't, he would have been gone already. Cockrell is there. Golden is likely penciled in as the starting strong. Really, no worse today than they were ending the season. They lost an aging SS that had lost a step and a runt DB that could not cover.

They will go after DBs in the draft. Look for a strong safety and probably a pair of corners if the right guys fall. They are doing a lot of due diligence on DBs. If they sign anyone prior to the draft, probably an interior OL. Watch for a DL, pass rusher, and DBs in the first five rounds."

I think it was more than that. He hasn't posted over at the Universe board for quite some time. I think it was a combination of that and personal things he was going through.

To also be fair I believe one poster was canned that was considered cancerous.

Sometimes you have to cut those types out before it spreads.

:tyrannosaurus:

I'm friends with him on Facebook and have tried to get him to come back. But hasn't work.. but he reads.. he's been on lately. Also he posts under a diff name on another board he told me.

What is the question?

It's pretty easy to figure out if you understand the math and rules/time of year under which you are asking.

I honestly think, with the way the board is now, that TMC would have a great time here again. I know for a fact that he'd have enough people to defend him when he returns. Not that he'd need it now. People aren't as abusive as they were in the past. Misinformed or dim perhaps, but not as abusive ;)

True. I've really tried to make things more enjoyable. I didn't even read this side of the board for a long time. I want there to be good football conversation not people following people from post to post to try and fight. That was where we were - along with not a lot of activity. As much as Coach and POP start redundant posts some of them are decent.

I agree. I enjoy most of them and it helps keep the board active during the slow times of the year. The football side is definitely going strong, but we don't have a resident scout in place breaking down the prospects.

Yeah? Well, we need more skin pics on the board. Its going to hell with the lack of soft porn on here. Used to be a skin-fest in the olden days. I have a lot of lonely nights that are tough to get through sometimes, you know? Let's turn this ship around.
