Tomlin has a blind spot for the scrappy type of players who get their @sses handed to them more often than not, and can quickly put a newer more talented player in his doghouse. Sometimes he says so-so and so just doesn't know the system, then quickly is proven wrong when he has to play.
But defense is changing. We play far less base 3-4, and more nickel and dime.
We need an OLB who can
1 ) Rush the passer.
2 ) Shed blocks and make tackles in-line or in purist vs the run or pass.
3 ) Offer coverage vs RB's and TE's
A scheme flexible player, or a player who's very good at more than one variety of defense.
Jones is a liability in all three phases of the game in a 3-4, or nickel or dime as he doesn't have the skills for special teams either. Yet he remains a starter. An upgrade is badly needed.
With Blake gone, the focus shifts to the next weakest link.
