Colbert said #Steelers will largely look to fill holes from within. Didn't sound like team would be major players in FA - again

I feel nauseous........

As long as they extend decastro and some other helpful guys like gay, foster, golden, McClendon and a couple of mid level signings for the CB and DLine positions I'm ok with that plan

That changes nothing. I never expected them to be big SPENDERS. That doesn't mean they won't target the mid-range guys. I would LOVE for them to sign another James Farrior, Ryan Clark, Jeff Hartings, or Kemo Von Oelhoffen type.

Maybe they are trying to fool other teams.

No ****. I just laugh when people say that "they are just a player or two away from that 7th ring". Then proceed to copy and paste potential free agents that the team might bring in. Ummm yes. Player X would really help.
But player X isn't even going to get a look

In other news....water........ is wet.

In other news.... water is wet and the sky is above.

Yep they will bargin shop like always. If you thought otherwise you havent followed this team much. They will look for a pratice squad guy to take a step forward and hope a draft pick or two hits big... Nothing to see here... Move along

Steelers have never been big in free agency. Who is the steelers biggest free agent signing ever? I think it might be Jeff Hartings. He was one of the top free agent targets in all the NFL that year and the steelers got him. Other than that, their free agent signings have mostly been depth guys or underrated guys from other teams.

Guys like Farrior, Kemo, and Ryan Clark were great players for the steelers who came cheap because their original teams pretty much gave up on them.

Steelers have always been smart. Even last year with cap issues, they landed Deangelo Williams who was a key player. Their philosophy is usually to fill holes in the roster with reasonably priced free agents so that they are not forced to draft certain positions and can instead go with the best player available most rounds.

I think that Punter may be the big free agent move if there is a good one available.

Why? Do you not believe with a healthy AB, BB and Bell that the Steelers aren't the vest team in the NFL.

I believe we need a ugrade at SS and CB, and that upgrade isn't on the roster.

My question marks focus in on D.

We also need a better pass rush, Dupree is a unknown and after that nothing....

Far as the best team, they have to earn that. I believe that honor goes to Denver........

I hoping Boykin is added to that list. After all his team last year nearly gave up on him.......

I do beleive AB is a snazzy dresser so I can see him involved. I don't think everybody will wear one, but kinda kewl to be known as the VEST team in the nfl..................

Salute the nation

Remember, cockrell did well as a second year player.. They are likely moving grant to safety, goulson is going to be like a free second rounder with a year of playbook knowledge under his belt, golden looked good in limited time... The secondary isnt as devoid of hope as some might make it out to be, its just unproven potential so far

Well I think you are absolutely correct in your assesment of the roster. Problem is that this team is pot committed on offense and as we saw again defense wins championships. However, they are committed to BB already and what Colbert is in essence saying is that we won't be spending money in FA cause we can't. Not when you are going to have to pay two of the most explosive players at their position and in AB's case probably the best player in the league. I personally think they are going to have to let Bell walk, but if not there are other areas that will suffer. No they weren't the best, but they were a fumble and scoring a TD from 30 yards in from beating the team that was without two of their three best players and their QB at 75% capacity.

The Steelers are never buyer in the FA market, same song and dance...business booming as usual!

We are committed to our philosophy of retention and drafting.

The Steelers FA list should only include: former Steelers who could be brought back at a bargain price, other teams ps squad players, players from CFL, players that remain after the over spenders have sifted through the free agents once or twice and vet minimum guys. Add to those qualifiers FAs that were cut by their team rather than expired contract UFAs. Players that were cut don't count against the net gain/loss FA equation that determines comp picks awarded so we usually steer towards these free agents.

That oughta get the list down to a manageable numbers to sort through for our 1-2 signings. So far McCain seems to be a top prospect by these criteria, he will soar up the list if Gay/Boykin don't return.

We are roughly 3.5 million over the cap as of today. Colbert pretty much admitted we are over the cap. They way he puts in we are not in compliance yet, but will be after a few changes. AKA Cuts, or deferring money. I can't see us keeping Gay, or Foster now. McClendon is a maybe.

Ed B. ( Steelers writer ) was correct.

There have been published reports that the Steelers are projected to be a couple of million dollars over the 2016 salary cap, which kicks in across the NFL at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9. Numbers aside, Colbert doesn’t foresee the Steelers having to make “drastic changes” to get themselves into compliance when the time comes.

“The cap situation, relative to other years, is pretty good,” said Colbert. “We don’t have to make a lot of drastic changes to be in compliance. There will be some give-and-take along the way to get into compliance by the start of the league year (on March 9), but nothing drastic. We’ll be making adjustments throughout. If we add guys, depending on who we add, we may have to delete guys we didn’t anticipate, but we’ll only do that if we think we’re improving the team.” -

The reporters don't even need to waste their time and could just recycle Colbert's quotes. It's the same story every year.

Can't be big spenders in free agency when you're against or over the cap, but that's what happens when you have to pay a lot of good players, plus Cortez Allen.

Geesh, this is not groundbreaking news is it? The Steelers for as long as I care to remember do the following:

1) Sign there own FAs that they believe will help them win a Super Bowl (this is there splash in free agency)
2) Fill in the roster with 2nd tier free agents so that they have no holes on the roster going into the draft
3) Draft the BPA
4) Wash, rinse repeat

This is like clock work folks, clock work I tell ya.

Papillon

Even if we planned on making a play for Von Miller or Norman he'd still give this exact same answer.

No he didn't Joel. And, we are not 3.5 over the cap. Plenty of guys out there that track the cap for a job have said we are about 2-3 million under.
Would you stop already?

Then why did Colbert say we don't have to make a lot of changes to be in compliance? Tell me, please. I'm not a cap expert and neither are the fans. I'll go on what Colbert says.

Sheesh... You guys should know by now that the front office designs long term contracts to be restructured on a yearly basis... That cap number is never right.. On paper they may be over but they will convert several guys who have no chance of being cut and end up under by a significant amount... Again this is all pre planned, just like it is every year
