Think about this. McLendon is a FA, Heyward and Tuitt would be great penetrating DT's, Timmons is going to be 30 and is our second highest cap it player, Shazier is a perfect Tampa 2 MLB, I think the cover 2 helps disguise poor CB's and Mike Mitchell would be a perfect SS in the system which means we just need a ballhawk FS.

Just a thought after looking at the roster and potential free agents.

It's possible they play more or the same amount of Tampa 2 on the back end. However, what it looks like you're asking is the proverbial "Is this the year that Tomlin changes the defensive scheme to a 4-3 front with a Tampa 2 back?". Personally, I don't think so. First, they don't have the front end depth at DE/DT to make the transition. DL depth is so thin on this team that Heyward and Tuitt played 88% and 78% of the season's defensive snaps. Second, Butler is a 3-4 guy. I don't think they ask him to change after only one year on the job as DC.

3rd at the END of the year Butler finally got the defense to start looking a little bit less like a hot mess.

They also have two 3-4 guys coaching their OLBs and spent a year training their top pick to play OLB. I'm sure the defense will continue to evolve, but I hope it isn't in the Tampa 2 direction.

we don't have the Dline depth to play a 3-4, so I don't see how more of a tampa 2 would help, we don't have any legit pass rushers from the ends/OLB's either, which is a need for the 4-3 and 3-4. Hope Dupree comes along quicker than Jones and better. Heyward played 67 snaps at denver and Tuitt played 66, mcClendon 17, thomas 16, mccullers 1, no wonder denver ran the ball right down our throats late, they were gassed and the altitude made it worse.

IF we draft a couple top CBs we can play whatever defense we want.

why can't people realize this?

With all the #1s invested at LB, there's no way we're switching to 4-3.

Dupree, Moats, Harrison I think could play DE. We might need another in FA or draft. OLB I feel would be the bigger need since JJ can probably play OLB. I guess they could have Chickillo play DE with Dupree and have Harrison and JJ stay at OLB and leave Shazier at MLB.

When it comes to a transition there's probably never any "good" year. But if they were to make the switch this might be as good as any to do it.

Not sure what scheme they are playing or if they will even sign McLendon. They took him off the field on most 2nd and 3rd downs. They went with 2 linemen the majority of the time, especially the back half of the season. I'd like to see them keep three big guys on the front to demand, at least single, if not double coverage.

We don't have the safties skills needed to best ultized the advantage of a cover two, and our corners are a little small. Blake needs to be repleaced. I think our zone will be a bit more spaced out, unitl the DB's are upgraded. Shazier however can be a great cover 2 line backer.

Why would we make a sweeping change to a defense that performed admirably this season (in terms of sacks, takeaways and points allowed)? Butler is only going to get better in his 2nd year in charge of the D and we should expect continued improvement from guys like Dupree, Shazier and Tuitt. If we can just add some more talent to the secondary, the arrow should keep pointing up.

By the way, every team plays a little Tampa 2 but very few play a lot of it anymore. A good QB can exploit the holes in the defense quite easily unless you've got 4 absolutely amazing pass rushers.

Sweeping chances to the secondary need to be made, and re-signing Gay is a must. We agree there Al. Upgrade over Gay and Will Allen, and the entire unit is better.

I beleive our pass defense ranked 30th, which is terrible, but when you factor in we played 7 back up qb's, in reality it coud be worse then we realize.

As for the pass rush, a lot of them came from the DB's and ILB's, which is a little unusal. Upgrading the OLB pass rush needs to happen as that's a main reason why you run a 3-4 defense. Harrison might retire, and Jones had but 2 sacks for the Season. Dupree started out well, then hit a rookie wall. I do think Dupree has the ability to become a good pass rusher, but he has a lot to learn and some draft sites kncoked his football IQ.

Dupree could, but again, why train him for a full season at OLB if they were going to change. Last year WAS a "good year" to switch as they changed DC and moved on from Polamalu and Keisel. Moats and Harrison would offer far less at DE than they do at OLB. Just doesn't make sense to make the switch this year if they didn't last when they truly underwent a transition.
