Coates and Wheaton

Would you trade Wheaton for a 3rd round pick

My thoughts...

DO NOT OPEN ANYMORE THREADS by Coach.

I'm done thinking.

Practice what you preach :)

This is a valid topic. If your attention span waines, I can create a trade thread for Odell Beckham Jr.

I don't have the numbers in front of me but I imagine Sanders showed more potential here than Wheaton has so far, no? Can't imagine getting a 3rd for him. Although I will say I could see Wheaton doing well in New England

Cope I live in jersey and have heard nothing about the Giants souring on OBJ. They would laugh at that trade.

I don't see any incentive for trading Wheaton. The Steelers like to use three receivers and have at least four dressed on game days, one injury and the depth is gone. Bryant is one dumb mistake away from a suspension and Coates hasn't proven his worth yet (sorry, two receptions in a playoff game doesn't cut it yet).

It was a RFA pick that would equate to the round of the player drafted. Wheaton and Sanders were both 3rd rounders. If someone tried to take him next year, they'd have to offer a 3rd rounder.

Hey AJ, I live in Philly, where in NJ do you live?

I remember hearing on sports talk radio, that Coughlin soured on Beckham after the suspension incident. Mara was mad at Cough for not treating it appropriately, and was a reason why they fired him. If the new head coach, who was hired from the previous coaching staff, shares Coughlin's views, perhaps they would be open to moving him? I am speculating of course, but if I'm a GM, I do make an inquiry.

I thought they'd use Coates more in that game. Seemed like a playmaker.

And Coach, no need to start a new thread on Beckham. I've started the dialogue in 2 different threads.

I would move Wheaton,....to the bench.... and get Coats on the field. Wheaton had his chance to prove himself and I think he failed. He had 5 catches for 30 yards in ABs absence. Not good enough. Coats has more big play ability and is a bigger redzone target.

I'm in Newark..the hellhole as XC944 would say. Everything I heard is they love him. He is the star of the team. Nothing short of AB will suffice.

Do you frequent Texas Arizona? I was there for the Steelers Chicago snow game in 2005.

The only way I move Wheaton is if I'm getting equal or better production in return. For example, I'd trade Wheaton, straight up, for Odell Beckum. Both are in their final years of their contracts. NY is souring on Odell, but can't just dump him without something in return. I could see that as a win-win.

Come on. You couldn't even make that trade in Madden 2002. Don't be ridiculous.

I'd stick with the current group of WR for another season. If Martavis has a mess up again. Then explore options. The team needs a TE

No but I'm definitely planning on going to the cowboys game next year in Pittsburgh..

Why would you want to break up the band? Stupid idea YOKO.

Seriously, i can see Coats moving ahead of DHB but we need to keep Wheaton. He is a solid, experienced player who doesn't cost much while still on his rookie contract. Coats has only really showed us 1 game and MB still has to prove that his personal problems are under control.

The only changes i'd make on offense would be to add a pass catching TE to learn under Heath, more depth on the line and maybe another backup qb. Lets keep our depth at WR and make another run up the stairway to seven!

Yes it is I've been there..but I work on the weekends now have been for a year or so now. I usually watch on my huge phone or the 50 inch TV if we are on TV here locally.

I would trade Bryant. He's a proven explosive player with a high risk factor. A desperate team might give up a First for him.

I use that pick to take a corner, and our pick to take another pass rusher at OLB or a safety. Sua Cravens if he's there.

This would allow us the cap space to lock up Antonio long term, and the ability to develop Coates into the big play generator he can be, while minimizing the risk of a Bryant meltdown.

Looking ahead to next year, Coates is a player who can make an impact. He played very well vs. a good Denver defense.

Wheaton's contract expires in 2017. It might be a shrewd move to trade him now, say for a 3rd round pick, mostly because he'll be tough to re-sign in 2017, and Coates has better upside.

Brown better be re-signed, and Bryant is signed until 2018.

I know its only one game, but Coates looks like a very strong and fast player with the ball in his hands. Wheaton to me is a solid #2, or very good #3.

Years back the Steelers mishandled E. Sanders in free agency. We should have taken the 3rd round pick for him. Instead, he walked and we got virtually nothing. So perhaps the best time to move Wheaton is now as we have two better players ahead of him and one very good looking younger player behind him.

Thoughts?

Fully agree. Either that, or dump Heyward-Bey.

Oh and FYI, we received a 6th round comp for our Free Agents with Sanders.

Seems this team has a very legitimate 1-2 year window as a serious SB contender. Ben is 33 and not getting any younger and the young rebuilding D got some experience together this year. I'd hate to come up just short due to a depleted WR corps that was depleted for the 3-4 rounder Wheaton could potentially bring. We need to focus on winning it all next year, does getting rid of Wheaton help in achieving that goal? Probably not as the pick we would receive would probably have a far smaller role in contributing to a SB win. Let Ben have his weapons while the window is still open.

I like the idea of exploring an extension with him to see where his head is at contract wise. If his demands seems unrealistic, let him play his *** off next year trying to get that next deal and take the comp pick when he departs.

We have been riddled with injuries as of late and having a 4 deep solid WR corps offers not only insurance at that position, but also an alternate 5 WIDE *******!!! game plan for when the inevitable RB injury happens.

It is also quite helpful going into a draft where we need DL, pass rush, and secondary help to not have to focus on WR. Take a late WR with return potential and keep Wheaton. This will allow us to go D on 3 of our first 4 picks.

Good points overall.

But I'd say Wheaton is a so-so No. 2, and better-than-average No. 3. He's not ready for prime time and struggled against the Broncos.

I think Bryant has more upside.
