Looking ahead to next year, Coates is a player who can make an impact. He played very well vs. a good Denver defense.

Wheaton's contract expires in 2017. It might be a shrewd move to trade him now, say for a 3rd round pick, mostly because he'll be tough to re-sign in 2017, and Coates has better upside.

Brown better be re-signed, and Bryant is signed until 2018.

I know its only one game, but Coates looks like a very strong and fast player with the ball in his hands. Wheaton to me is a solid #2, or very good #3.

Years back the Steelers mishandled E. Sanders in free agency. We should have taken the 3rd round pick for him. Instead, he walked and we got virtually nothing. So perhaps the best time to move Wheaton is now as we have two better players ahead of him and one very good looking younger player behind him.

Thoughts?

I agree. I would shoot for a rd 2 pick. He has had some nice games for us.

A lot of those thoughts are similar to mine. One EXCEPTION, one of the "two players" in front of him is just one toak away from a MAJOR suspention. Of the four, Wheaton is the most expendable. We as fans will never get the "INSIDE" scoop on anything. Make Wheaton a fair cap friendly offer and see what happens. NEVER rule out a trade, provided it is a fair value. Would a fourth / third be the range?

Salute the nation

I can't see any team giving more than a 3rd round pick for him, and even then I'm not sure. It would need to be a team with a very good #1 WR.

We could probably get Jerry Jones to give us a 2nd for him...

Agreed. But I can see a third round pick for him. And I for one would take it!

Teams like New England, New Orleans, Arizona ( if they lose a WR in free agency ) San Diego, Kansas City, and maybe San Fransico I think would like to have Wheaton.

Such thinking has eluded the Steelers in the past, but after the mishandling of Sanders I think is on their radar in the present.

I would keep all 4 and trot all 4 out there with Bell in the backfield and see teams try to match-up.. let Bey go.

That is a one-year strategy. Once Brown gets his new deal, there will be a lot of cap space allocated to the WR position. I'd rather unload Wheaton now, and use the draft pick on a Saftey, Pass rusher or Corner who will be here for 4 seasons at a very cheap price.

If we got a 3rd for Wheaton our draft could look like this

1 ) CB
2 ) OLB
3 ) S
3B ) BPA at CB, or OLB

Wheaton is not demanding a big contract nor is he going to give you a 4 or higher in the draft(via trade). He has more value to us next year and if happens to have a big year we will get a comp pick for him..Bryant staying on course and trusting Coates to be a slam dunk contributor is risky.

How do you know Wheaton is not demanding a big contract? Did Wheaton say he'd give a home town discount?

I'd say Wheaton wants to make a much as he can and play a bigger role. It's not trending that way.

As for his trade value, there are 31 teams. I think you can get a 3rd for him, or a 4th at the very least.

Isn't his contact up after next year? So like I said if wants a big contract he will need to have a big year next year..if he does great for us. We let him go and receive a comp pick. But to let him go now with no insurance that Bryant will keep his nose clean or that Coates can handle the role is not smart. He has more value to us next year and like I said I would trot out all 4 with Bell and make teams match up. Especially if we don't get a pass catching TE.

Before even thinking of moving Wheaton, you better be sure Coates is legit and Bryant is staying and will stay off dope.

The Steelers have seen Coates in practice and he produced in a playoff game. I'd say he's legit. What the Steelers think though is what matters most.

Bryant is a different story. Point taken, and the same goes for Bell. I think the Steelers locker room, unfortunately, is alphabetical. I would not be opposed to a re-org of the locker room.

The upside would be placing say a team captain or positional mentor next to a younger talented player who may need to act a bit more like a professional. I like this idea, others may not.

Placing two guys who got into trouble next to each other ( Bell and Blount ) or two guys with pot issues ( Bell and Bryant ) is unwise.

A player can't have a big year if he doesn't get the opportunity! AB, Bryant, Miller, Bell, ....there's only one football. And like I said Coates is coming on.

However, Wheaton did prove he can have a big game or two so his value I think is decent and his cap number ideal for a trade.

Coates is not proven. Practice is one thing playing games against the starters is another. He looked great and I have high hopes but he still has to go out and prove he has the mental part down vs starters.

Jesus Christ what are you talking about??? There hasn't been any rumblings about Bell since.... none.

Miller is just about done. He can't run anymore. He offers nothing after the catch. He is a great locker room presence and reliable to be where he is supposed to be but he is not a focal point anymore. Which is why I proposed going 4 wide more since that's where the talent is at WR. Trotting all 4 out Wheaton would get more opportunities. Especially with the attention Brown Bryant and Bell would demand.

I can't imagine any team giving up a high pick for a hot and cold WR in the last year under contract unless it's a pre season injury and they need a guy.

Only guy I trade is Suisham. Whatever pick we can get from a team with a ****** kicker who wants to send a draft pick, I trade them Sushi.

Wheaton is a guy I let play out his contract and walk to another team, get a compensatory pick the year after he leaves. He is totally replaceable. Coates could probably already take his spot.

The problem with 4 wide, is it takes heath away from helping our OT's chip or slow down elite pass rushers, that was part of what made our Oline so good this season.

I don't have as much problem with Coach's posts. I only think most of them would be better served as polls than as a line or 2 of commentary.

This same thing came up 2 years ago when we had the ability to dump Sanders for a pick (3rd rounder). Many at that time wanted the pick. I personally did not, since he had great hands and could get open. Wheaton is almost identical to Sanders in the way both have played for us. Both are quick, fast, are shifty, and have great hands. I personally like Wheaton's hands better as a Steeler, though Sanders has proven he is a better receiver overall in Denver. Point is, you don't dump a productive player for a draft pick (which is a total question mark). We'll be getting something for Wheaton when he signs his second contract. It's called a comp pick. Plus we'll have an extra year of the man's production instead of a 3rd round question mark.

The Steelers used to dump players for draft picks as business model. They never won a playoff game when they did that.

The only way I move Wheaton is if I'm getting equal or better production in return. For example, I'd trade Wheaton, straight up, for Odell Beckum. Both are in their final years of their contracts. NY is souring on Odell, but can't just dump him without something in return. I could see that as a win-win.

Odell and AB would be a dream come true

2 catches on 3 targets and Coach has him enshrined.
