But as someone approaching 70, I can't imagine Coughlin wanting to have to take on a total rebuilding process with a cupboard that is, essential, totally bare.

Coughlin seems like he'd be a good fit for Indy. That team is poorly built, but still has enough talent to win in that pathetic division.

Agreed. I thought he would only come back for the Giants gig though. If he doesn't interview, at least, he's done.
 
I agree... while Indy's roster is WAY too old and has holes, they do have a supposed franchise QB. If Coughlin were to come in, he could focus on the other pieces of the puzzle in the draft and free agency.

Also, unlike Cleveland, I do think that Indy has a stable and competent owner who is committed to winning. I do believe they will put a GM and the player personnel pieces in place needed to help Coughlin get the pieces he needs to put on a good run, especially in that division. After all, as bad as we say the Indy roster is, they did finish the year 8-8 and are only a year removed from finishing 11-5 and playing in the AFCC. With the right moves, Coughlin might be able to get a decent run out of the Colts next year, and not three years down the road.

Compare that to Cleveland, where they've ALREADY displayed their total incompetence by hiring a lawyer numbers guy to make personnel decisions. Who will hire a GM who will not really be a GM who reports to the lawyer numbers guy. If I were Coughlin (and really, ANY coach with a pedigree) I would tell Haslan "no thanks" and move along!
 
****, at 69 years old I'd be planning on golf and fishing. No way I would go back to a head coaching job.

I used to LOATH Coughlin when he started off with Jags, and they were in our div. But he put a very solid team together in J-ville, don't forget. Those were good teams.

Brunell, Boselli, Fred Taylor, Jimmy Smith, McCardell, Kevin Hardy, Tony Brackens, Donovin Darius, Bryce Paup, et al. In 1999 they only lost to ONE team all year, unfortunately for them it was 3 losses to the Titans including in the AFCC game.

If TC still has the desire, a team could do a lot worse than him.

If you read the article on Cowher, about how his life is so much more chill from not being a head coach, and how much more he is enjoying life in general, I don't see him coming back.
 
So Jeff Fischer... I know he is despised here, with good reason. And I know he'll get another HC job if St. Louis fires him, but.... his defenses play with a nasty streak. If he were to concentrate solely on the defense, as a defensive coordinator, would he be an upgrade from Butler? Because, frankly, I don't see why the Steelers have had a hard on for Butler as the heir apparent for LeBeau, he has shown me nothing so far,I'd like to see a change at that position during the off-season. Maybe not Fischer, but there has to be someone who can better prepare a defense for game day.

I hope Mrs Coughlin helps him make the decision. At 70 YO with two Lombardis, what would possess a man to waste the best years of his grand children's lives? He's spent enough time raising other people's children.

Before I hang out Butler to dry, I will take into consideration:

1.) No legit 3-4 NT to work with. This system simply does not work without a legit road grader at NT, and we don't have one. We had Joel Steed, and stunk until we drafted Casey Hampton. And we have stunk since being without big Casey. The guys we have are not terrible, but they not the immovable beasts that Steed and Hampton were. Until we have a freak at NT, we can't really judge Butler.

2.) No legit pass rushing OLB. We have Harrison at 37, a rookie, who has come to a stop in terms of productivity and a bum in J. Jones. Show me any DC who makes this D work without a legit pass rushing OLB unit.

3,) The worst starting CB unit in the NFL. 'Nuff said.

4.) Safeties that scare no one.

Show me what DC does well with the above deficiencies. I just don't see it.

ALL of Coughlins playoff wins with the Giants came in the 2 years he won the SB. ALL of them. He was one and done 3 times and missed the playoffs six times. An 8-3 record is good, but all of those wins came in two playoff years. There are 9 other failures, six of which were failures to make the playoffs, including the last 4 years. Sure, that is better than anything the Browns and Bengals have seen, but if that was Tomlin or even Cowher, this fan base would be trying to run him out on a rail.

Coach Coughlin will more than likely be moving right here to Jacksonville where he has roots.

Maybe he'll consult the Jags, part-time, but I don't see a full time role anywhere going forward...

No, his job does keep him close to the sport.

The guys on the CBS show - as well as the programs on Fox and ESPN - monitor every Sunday afternoon game -- on a wall of screens. They're regularly taking notes, and talking with each other, as well as the production staff, about what they're seeing and might discuss on-camera. They aren't snoozing for six hours. (I know, I spent time there in my "previous life" as a sports writer.)

In addition, several times a year they're sent to various NFL cities to do interviuews. And, in Cowher's case, he was at the site of almost every Thursday-night telecast this season.

Granted, Cowher's isn't a back-breaking, 60-hour-a-week job. But there's more to it than spouting "nonsense."

I am not a big fan of Tomlin by any stretch. I guess my point is that the media and even some here to a lesser extent, people are singing Coughlin praises. He had 2 great seasons, playoff wise. Same for Tomlin I guess. However, this team has never really bottomed out with Tomlin. 7 winning seasons in 9 years and no losing seasons. In contrast, Coughlin has had six winning seasons, 4 losing seasons and 2 at .500.

I would like to see playoff improvement just like you, but I think in the grand scheme of things, maybe we don't have it quite so bad in Pittsburgh. Could be better, but certainly could be worse. Guess we will see on Saturday night.

The Browns ownership is dysfunctional. It's rumored the coaches and the now departed GM didn't like working for Jim Haslam. This is interesting since Haslam owned a minority interest in the Steelers between 2008 and 2012. You would think in those 4 years the Steelers business model would have made an impression?
Haslam's family wealth came from the Pilot Oil Corp founded by his old man. Haslam paid $1Billion dollars for the Brown's whose value in 2012 was listed as $977 million, 20th in the NFL!
Haslam's brother is the Governor of TN and he has personal friends that are US Senators and members of Congress.
I get the impression this guy Haslam is a rich arrogant prick who is well connected and runs his football club like one of his Pilot Flying J truckstops. No wonder Manziel acts like a spoiled 14 year old, look who is signing his paychecks!
We're I a coach or GM to go to work for this guy it would be for a guaranteed minimum 4 years, enough time to try and build something! I get to pick my people, drafts, and he stays the FAK away from the locker room. And if the douche got pissed and fired me before the 4 years he better have a check for the remaining salary in his hand.

I was gonna say, the Browns are the Pittsburgh Pirates of the NFL but they're even worse than that.
 
Following the Buccos since I was a wee laddie in the late '50's, the club was never the same after the Galbreath family sold the team to the "Pittsburgh Associates" consortium in 1985. The Galbreaths were IMHO "baseball people". Kevin McClatchy gave it a go from '96 to '07 when Nutting bought the team. Nutting is a cheap ******* that treats his employees like ****. Nutting owns the Seven Springs Ski Resort so those record sell out crowds at PNC? Well they sure aren't buying talent are they!
The weather this winter isn't so great for skiing is it?
Strikingly similar, the Pirates are owned by a real estate guy, the Brown's are owned by a truck stop operator. Do they know anything about baseball or football?

With the hiring structure that the Browns have in place, where the GM is going to have a HC and Head of Player Personnel already hired, do you really think Cowher or any other established candidate will take the GM position in Cleveland?

The rumors of Cowher to the Giants have already started. Personally I'd be surprised if he coaches again, he's got a sweet gig in the studio for decent money.
 
Last of the old fundmenatist Paul brown, chuck Noll, Bill Walsh, he was tuff on the mlliionaires he was all about what was good about football
