A new Tomlin thread, and no, not a bash him thread.

Harrison never started for Cowher, I don't think Keisel ever started for Cowher, maybe the 2006 season, he had Porter at ROLB and brought in good FA's like Kimo, Clark, Farrior.

I'm not sure Tomlin has shown any signs of fixing the defense, and Ben has 2-3 years of good football left.

Harrison did start for Cowher. He started 8 games and played in 44 total games. Keisel was Cowher's full time starter in 2006 as he started all 16 games.

I mean as a full time starter, Harrison was a back-up unless of injuries or meaningless games like the end of 2004, and then Keisel was drafted in 2002 and didn't become a full time starter until 2006, just goes to show how good the defense was

Harrison stood out (to me anyway) on special teams which you'll remember was definitely Cowher's litmus test for new talent. He looked like the second coming of Greg Lloyd but he could never break his way onto the defense. I'm pretty sure he was even cut at one point. At that point I knew Cowher was a complete moron and wondered how he kept his job. :) Like Tom said, there was just a ton of talent on the D side of the ball at that time.

I halfway recall that was one of the big beefs at the time where Cowher would allow young talent to rot on the bench if he had a healthy veteran playing, even if the score was out of hand or the vet was winded.

I agree the defense was great. Just pointing out that Keisel was a full time starter under Cowher.

That wasn't true at all, alot of young guys played under Cowher.

The Tomlin apologists are sounding a lot like the Kordell apologists

Young maybe, but if there was someone higher on the depth chart, that veteran player was in on 95% of the snaps even when things were under or out of control. I'm not complaining about that method, I just remember folks clamoring for the backups to play more so they can gain game-time experience.

I don't think Bell is going to command as much as one might think due to injuries. He doesn't seem like the type to push his way out of Pittsburgh.

I like the idea of Colbert handling the final decisions. If he isn't already.

And if he is? then reverse that thought process.

Obviously someone is substandard at evaluating talent. Especially at LBer and CB and S.

But I see teams like the Ravens canning CB's mid-season.

And the Steelers play one all year that should have been benched.

It is just a stream of bad decisions, that a few ok ones can't mask.

Let me list some:

1. Adams should have been cut injury waived and replaced with a LT with experience.
2. A SS should have brought in in the off-season with experience.
3 A upgrade at OLBer was needed /they tried to make due with a has been / mediocre scrub/ and a draft bust / and a rookie.
4 If you are going to bring in a CB trade for him, you play him.

Seems they spend more time stock piling bodies instead of getting upgrades, ans those ****** decisions bit the team in the *** all year long.

In free agency the Steelers need three upgrades, not benched players but quality productive players.

One at CB, SS, and OLBer.

Ifffffff they don't do at least two out of the three

bookmark how yinz feel at this moment, because next year will be another year of frustration...........

Id keep Bell over Bryant. As Cope pointed out: MB is one screw up away from a season long suspension. He would be wise to take a smaller "show-me" second contract if he wants to stay here.

As far as the defense goes, I think a point that is often over looked is how many teams run the 3-4 or a version of it. Back in the 90's and early 00's we were either the only or one of the few teams running this scheme. We pretty much had the pick of the litter when it came to under-sized 4-3 rush ends that were conversion projects. Guys like Porter (3rd round) are now 1st round picks and guys like Harrison (UFA) are now being drafted in rounds 4-7. Anyone who knows me knows I am in no way what so ever a fan of Tomlin. I just think, to be fair, that there is no way to know for sure how Cowher would do drafting now with half the league competing for the type of talent that he used to have a virtual monopoly on.

We have williams signed through 2016. At 35, he will not be breaking any bank to resign him to a vet contract for the 2017 season, if he's still in the league.

Counterpoint, he often split time with another back in Carolina and unlike Bell does not have two knee injuries and a suspension.

I think Williams is a little faster and a better power runner.

I think Bell has better hands and is a better pass protector.

If you put their stats for the season, Williams might be a bit better with the same players.

Bell can run routs and catch like a wide receiver though.

It would be interesting to see what he'd do with the talent that's out there. Remember he prided himself initially on matching his scheme to fit the players that he had. He did not try to transform players to match his scheme, thus taking away from their strengths.

After the donahoe vs Cowher incident, I believe the HC has the first & last final say on the draft picks. Whatever. We have drafted how many dbacks over the last 8 years,, ? A lot.. im not going back and counting. Suffice it to say the steelers have struck out on 99% of them.
