You are missing the "Well if he had just listened to the police" and not all "cops are bad" and the "they don't protest criminals" and the general don't give a **** attitude about police brutality/accountability/corruption. Keep in mind this was not the only scandal CPD is involved in. This murder and subsequent cover up attempt is in addition to the Chicago Police Department running a secret detention/torture facility. That points to a systemic problem throughout the CPD that we all ought to be outraged over. As a conservative I care bout the rule of law as much as I care about law and order. Most of you guys seen to be content to trade your rights away for some temporary security. Y'all need to remember the favor of the government is fleeting. A long time ago a wise old man said something about trading liberty for safety.

This incident may very well be an example of a bad cop but in many, many other instances, for example the Michael Brown case, the shootings we are told are cold blooded murders turn out to be justified. I feel fairly confident from the video that this cop way overreacted, however I also feel fairly confident we don't know the whole story. We can't see what this guy did with his hands, we can't hear what he was saying...did he appear to be reaching for something? You have a crazy drugged up nut waving a knife around and say he looks like he's reaching into his waistband for something, are you going to wait til he shoots you to find out what he's reaching for? There is no excuse for truly bad cops but you try spending a few months as a cop in the drug, gang, and gun infested shithole that is Chicago and then tell me you will always react exactly appropriately in every situation.
Yes, there are bad cops, yes there are incompetent cops, but I totally agree with Supe that the vast majority of cops are just trying to do their jobs and make it home alive as best they can.

Well duh. In a nation mostly comprised of Christians, furthermore, worshiping under the label of "Christian" means squat.
Are you talking about the guy that shot up the abortion clinic, or Timothy McVeigh, or the guy that shot up the black church? ....they may all be Christian, but unlike Islamic extremism being Christian isn't the motivating force by which these loonies do what they do.

I guess I don't see where people are saying what you think they are saying. The vast majority has said they don't agree with what the cop did. They ALSO mention that if the cops tell you to get out of the street, get out of the ******* street.
Do you think this cop would have shot this guy if he had gotten out of the street? I think it unlikely, which is all anyone is saying. No one is using it as justification for the shooting (or I don't interpret it as such). Based upon what little I've seen/read, it was, probably, only a matter of time before this cop shot or otherwise injured someone.
How many of them are saying it is OK for the cop to shoot you if you don't. Especially, in the back or 16 times? Who are they?
How many people here are saying what this cop did was OK? Who are they?
I also don't see how getting out of the street when the cop tells me to as giving up any rights.
How many of us here are saying "give up your rights if a cop tells you to do so"? Who are they and what rights are they OK giving up?
How many of us are saying the cops don't have to follow the law and who are they?
I'm not missing the "not all cops are bad", I just don't interpret someone saying that the same way you do, I guess. This seems to have been a bad cop who did a bad thing. I don't know how saying "not all cops are bad" changes that in any way? Are any of us saying this was a good cop? Anyone saying he didn't use excessive force?
If a cop approaches me, I don't assume he is a bad cop. I assume he is one of the good cops, with the wariness that I could be wrong.
The fact is, if anyone is going to protest, it should be because of an unjustified shooting and not based upon the race of the people involved (unless there is some actual proof that THIS officer acted in such a way due to racial views). This should be protested that those in charge covered it up and, seemingly, conspired to destroy evidence. I'd imagine that wasn't done on racial bias, but, who knows.
Several people should be fired, just for the cover up, as it had to involve several people. I see where the Police Chief already resigned. How can that be enough?

Great points ark, and I think it's also inaccurate to try and portray these situations as some kind of endemic problem. People have millions of interactions with police every year...good people and bad people, violent criminals and people doing absolutely nothing wrong, sober people and people who are absolutely whacked out of their minds. The vast, vast majority of these people come out of these interactions completely unharmed. Another significant portion are completely responsible themselves for whatever happened to them. The anti-cop rhetoric is largely unfounded, and it's extremely dangerous. Frankly I don't know why anyone would sign up to be a cop today. Eventually probably the only ones who will are the real ******** who don't care about their own lives or about what anyone thinks of them.

How long does it take to investigate a LEO with known hate issues? How can anyone overlook the fact that 89 minutes of video was destroyed to protect this officer of the law? If the boy was walking away - why was it necessary to use deadly force?
Again, there are other men of color here on this site - here as our family, who have had to experience the uncomfortable fact that, we are feared because of the color of our skin. That fact may upset you - so be it; but until you experience "that" (oh, and trust me, I've seen it from the other side too when some of my black acquaintances have mistreated my wife for not being black).
It apalls me that some get offended when stories like these stir up the country. The country many of us took years of our lives to defend.

I am not offended when stories like these come up. Now cases where the media stirs **** up when it is not called for or "witnesses" make inaccurate statements that get accepted as the truth and result in idiots rioting and destroying their neighborhoods and peoples hard earned businesses...those offend me.
It is sad though that the daily murders of young black men by other young black men does not stir the masses to this type of action. Until the masses give a **** about that and do something to curb that violence then nothing is going to change. Police are not going to be able to put a stop to it, the community needs to do their part. "moms" need to quit spitting out welfare kids and "dads" need to man up and raise their kids instead of moving on to the next baby's momma and creating more kids like they are in a reproduction contest

This...it offends me that rather than our president taking a balanced approach and urging people to stay calm and carefully consider all of the facts, to respect the process and let justice run its course, he consistently jumps in and makes assumptions and seeks to divide. This president who had an opportunity to be a wonderful example of an ambitious, hard-working family man to young black men, instead chose to fan the flames of hatred and rage and encourage a victim mentality that will serve only to destroy them. All for his own political purposes. That offends me.
This coverup isn't **** compared to the Bengazi coverup. Just saying.

Berm, I often agree with your posts. However...
When I see you post a thread or a reply to a post being disgusted and shocked that 30 people were shot over Thanksgiving weekend, 11 of which died...and you're enraged about it, and want change...then I will hear your points.
THAT is a cover up...that there is no media outrage, that there is no concern over those loss of lives.
How is is this man's life so much more precious than those? Or those lives lost the weekend prior? Or the weekend before that? Or the weekend to come?

The investigation was slow but it happened and this guy will likely go to jail. Where was the cover up?

The investigation happened because people kept making requests for the dash cam video. The FOI/Sunshine law requests were delayed for over a year and finally the tape was released after a judge forced the CPD to release it. That is also part of the cover up, the other part is CPD investigators erasing video from surveillance cameras at a Burger King across the street that corroborated the coroners report that the initial rounds fired hit Laquan McDonald in the back. Further the CPD drug its feet on the investigation hoping it would be forgotten and they could make it go away. Thankfully they couldn't hide their corruption. Rahm Emmanuel has fired the police superintendent for this, not a fan of Rahm but he got this one right. There needs to be some more firings and charges for CPD officers who took part in the cover up and tampered with evidence.
I have said all I will say about this and I'm done with this thread.
