Do they still exist? I was on the north shore yesterday, and you would never have known there was a D1 game being played. Anybody know what the attendance was? On an unseasonably warm late fall afternoon you would think there would be a better turnout.

From what I was reading, that WAS good attendance and their attendance has been up this year since they're pretty good. A big part of their problem is that the stadium is not on the campus but realistically there is no place in Oakland for a stadium and parking so that's a non-starter. Pitt students can ride the city buses and subway for free and it's not that far a ride.

It's saying the attendance was 40k, which is twice as many as I would have guessed.

The yinzers have trouble filing the seats for their professional football team...... yet alone their college team..

Most Western Pa residents would rather go see their dentist than to travel "dawntawn"..

sorry that is my best written yinzer accent... lol

Cpollock was at the game. I haven't been to a Pitt game since 2009.

Panthers don't look that bad. I think Pit is more of a pro sports town than college anywho

You definitely know a Steelers game is going on when you're on the north shore. If yesterday's attendance was 40k, I'm guessing Steelers games also bring many thousands of people to the north shore for who don't actually attend the game.

When I attended Pitt in the mid 70's the stadium there still existed a top cardiac hill.
The student ID got you in the game for free and no one patted you down to get in, allowing flasks strapped to leg a simple process.

As a student with no means of transportation, I'm not sure I would have made it to Heinz. Friday nights were party time and I can remember staggering up the hill for the games.
And the team then wasn't good, they were great!

That's the thing, in a lot of big college towns there isn't anything else to do and the team doesn't have to compete for the entertainment dollar. Penn State, Ohio State, Iowa, Nebraska, Syracuse, etc.

There were probably between 35 and 40 thousand at the game. The students were away on break and it was a noon game the day after Thanksgiving against a team most couldn't care less about. Is what it is.

On a related note: boy, does Penn State suck! I don't care for Franklin at all. They consistently underachieve under him.

I thought they were showing signs of life for a few games, but then reverted again. Who really sucks is Kansas.

Penn State should have called the NCAA's bluff and dared them to give them the death penalty. No football at all would be better than what we've seen this year. Franklin might be a good recruiter but can't coach. Wish they could have kept Bill O'Brien but the NFL beckoned. If the program ever comes back, it won't be under Franklin.

I wouldn't be surprised if Franklin is canned after this year. I know they're hurting from the NCAA sanctions but still.... For sure after next season if they don't improve.

Most of us go to games to see friends. The game is secondary. Although there is an OK amount f surface parking there is still not enough. If I cannot tailgate with friends I won't go. I find college football barely watchable.

The students are forced to either stay the entire game or not go if they take buses from campus. So I would guess there are fewer going in the first place.

Finally, Pitt is competing for dollars with the Steelers and Penguins. Attendance was not bad this year since they are winning and have some exciting players. I can remember when Pitt stadium had less than 10k back in the early 90's.

This is not true at all.

Really? I'm not a big fan of any one college team, but as far as watching a game for entertainment, I actually prefer it over today's NFL. College football is a much purer form of football. It also still has a return game.
