Mike Tomlin liked what he saw from Dri Archer during a practice earlier in the week when the speedy third-round pick took a swing pass and exploded 10 yards into the end zone for a touchdown.

“You get him in open grass, and you are cooking with gas,” Tomlin said Thursday during the 10th and final voluntary practice of the offseason.

Tomlin knows what Archer can do coming out of the backfield, so he wanted to see what he could do as a receiver.

For the first time during the three weeks of organized team activities (OTAs), Archer worked with the receivers during individual drills and took snaps as a wideout in team drills.

“I am a versatile player, and when the coaches ask me to do something, I will do it,” Archer said. “It's another chance for me to get on the field.”

Playing receiver means extra study time. Archer attends wide receiver and running back meetings.

“It is a lot of work, but you just have to look at it in a positive way,” he said.

Archer, who ran a 4.26-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, caught 99 passes and 12 touchdowns in four years at Kent State while rushing for 2,342 yards, averaging 7.2 yards per carry.

Tomlin isn't worried about the workload for a rookie.

“You don't know what is too much until you do it,” Tomlin said.

GOOD THREE WEEKS

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger took part in all but one of the 10 offseason practices and said he believed voluntary spring practices were productive.

“I thought it was a good couple of weeks, just to get out here,” Roethlisberger said. “A lot of young guys or new guys on offense. To get them here working, I thought, was really good.”

Roethlisberger is dealing with the most change on offense in his 11 years. There are 17 skill-position players on the roster who weren't on the team a year ago, including eight of the 12 receivers.

THROWBACKS

The Steelers will wear their 1934 throwback uniforms during a Week 8 home game against Indianapolis. It will be the third consecutive year the Steelers will wear the '34 throwbacks and eighth consecutive year they've worn a throwback uniform. By NFL rules, the Steelers can't switch to another throwback style until after the 2016 season.

ODDS AND ENDS

Ike Taylor, Cody Wallace and Troy Polamalu did not attend the final OTA session. Taylor has missed two of the three weeks, Polamalu all 10 sessions and Wallace the past three. All are expected to be present when the Steelers return Tuesday for the start of a three-day mandatory minicamp.

After that, the Steelers will be off until they report to training camp July 25 at St. Vincent.

so when we cut him next week, what is the salary cap hit?

The truth is SNS was always subpar. We only thought it wasn't because the other options were ESPNTMZ and CNN.

Looks like the Steelers finally caught up to Archer to sign his contract. Good thing he didn't expect to be paid for 3 positions instead of one roster spot.

101 pages, 2009 posts...awesome. When he returns a kickoff for a TD in week 2 it will grow to 250 pages and when he gets broken in half in week 3, 300 pages. And by November we will be joking about this thread and wondering who will resurrect it.

If he does well, this thread will die. No steeler fan would have bad things to say if he's producing. We all want him to do well.

Though, if he does poorly or gets hurt, look out!!

Or as one poster was wishing, he'd fumble a touch down return, just to rile up the board. Why would anyone want to wish bad on one of our own?

I doubt that. For some reason, a lot of people want to keep this thread going. People are literally having fun posting about the length of it, like 2, 3 times a page.

It hasn't really been a Dri Archer thread

hey **** you, I didn't write it - don't you know it's illegal to change a copyrighted article's newsprint?

I honestly ask you things to see what kind of exaggeration you can come up with next. Apparently it limitless.

In the clip above to me he does somethings as a receiver that can be built upon. But thats just me.

I miss Club Buff. It allowed members to blow off steam, so no thread even had a chance of hitting 100.

That is bullshit. Parker made plenty of people miss, just like he did in the first and last play of this clip:

Parker just did his with hard cuts. And, another reason he was effective, he would lower his shoulder and run with power, breaking tackles, means the DBs and LBs would settle their feet, allowing him to beat them with speed. Another aspect Archer does not have. The only way Archer runs between the tackles is if the hole is large enough for Casey Hampton to fit through.

Of course you are not comparing every aspect of their game, because ALL Archer has is his speed and quickness. He lacks size. He lacks power. He fumbles. He is not the route runner Wallace is. He cannot challenge deep like Wallace. No way you can compare the complete player because Archer falls woefully short (no pun intended). So, you compare the only areas where he can be compared, but THOSE areas alone does not project you to be an NFL player, it is all the other **** wrapped around it.

And my rather simple answer is, you are so desperate to find the silver lining that you will grasp at anything related to him being able to do the job. He was not banged up as a freshman, sophomore, or most of his junior season. Why was he not used then? He lost the punting and kick returning job to a freshman this season.

Apparently Kent State is not afraid to use freshman IF they can do the job. They just did not use Archer. But, whatever, heard the same **** when they drafted Chris Rainey, how he would change the landscape of games due to his special teams. When I pointed out he did not return punts, heard the same ****. Wash, rinse, repeat.

I know. Archer is faster.

For all those who are mad at not taking Bryant with our 3rd instead of Archer. LMFAO

If I'm being converted at all (and Archer is not on my "what I would have done" board), it's the whole Warrick Dunn thing.

I don't think I realized how small and fast Warrick Dunn was when he came out in 1997. He ran a 4.28, which is pretty damn fast (like Archer) for a guy with that short of legs. Dunn was a pretty damn good professional. If someone can convince me that's his upside, then maybe I'm on board with the pick. But there are a ton of ifs with that. And Dunn was a division-I stud at FSU playing against NFL talent. Archer was not.

I want to see him line up at tailback and make teams think we are going for a trick and then just run the power-G at them. That's what I want to see. **** the trick play ****. Line him up like any other RB and see if he can handle the beating.

So forget value as they see it and reach??? The player they were going to take they still got. I just dont know what else they were suppose to do. They might not be right about Archer but at least they stuck to their board.

And im on record for saying i would have taken Desir or Bryant there. Didnt warm up to the pick until i watched some game film.

A real moderator would lock this **** up.

Why? No one is forcing you or anyone to be here in this thread. If you are not interested in it pick another. In spite of the blather there have been some good discussions from time to time, just like any conversation in a bar you will get the knowledgeable, the uninformed and folks that desire nothing other than being idiots. Enjoy what you like and ignore what you don't.

Great point, along the way, there were many many good discussions about Dri & Co.. The fact that there was drivle along the way, is no different than many other threads. Let the world be as it is. If there are parts some don't like, take it away from yourself personally. Don't change things, just to make you happy as many others may be just as happy as is. Thanks to all, whom have contributed, good or not so good, as we all know, it take a lot to keep the world turning.

Takes over 100 pages to get 4-5 pages of decent conversation? Not worth it; Coolie, go ahead and do the deed

Hall was likely signed due to a running back being banged up in practice. On Tuesday, rookie running back/wide receiver Dri Archer was spotted with ice on his knee, so he might very well be sidelined for the rest of the minicamp practices.
