Somebody please explain the two point attempt

So now we're guaranteeing made up **** ?

A hypothetical that should lead anybody with a modicum of common sense to conclude that kicking the XP is the right call in that type of a situation.

I was talking about the pass on 2nd 8 with 2:14 left in the game and AZ having two TOs left. If that goes incomplete, it does AZ a huge favor. If it results in a turnover, it's a disaster.

Regardless, even if AZ had returned the interception on the 2 point attempt for a score, the game is tied with 22 minutes left, hardly a disaster.

It was far from the most questionable call. How about running the ball on 3rd and 6 near the goal line and settling for a FG? To hell with one point, that's at least 3 points lost.

That was a risky gamble. Kicking a standard XP is not a risky gamble.

From what I remember we use to run the QB sneak with Ben early in his career and it use to be all but automatic. Am I miss-remembering?
 
Yes it wasn't automatic at all.

Haven't glossed over or forgotten anything. A number of factors contributed to that loss against the Ravens, Scobee's ineptitude first and foremost. Also particularly culpable reasons, in my opinion, were Brown's dropped touchdown pass and Tomlin's 4th down choices. Big plays and smart decisions win football games. Poor execution and foolish decisions lose football games.

Despite the lack of execution from Scobee and Brown, the Steelers still could have won the game had Tomlin simply chose to punt the ball on 4th-and-2 from the 39 yardline in overtime. Period.

I'm am no Tomlin fan but the game plan they had was good enough to win the game. Multiple players failed to do their job. Because of that Tomlin made certain in game decisions which results failed. To say we would of won the game if we punted is just another hypothetical.
 
He said we "could" have won the game. There was at least one point during that game I was surprised that we did not punt, and that may have been it.

Exactly. I don't have a problem with them going for it on early scores, especially with Ben. If they feel there's a hole in the defense they can exploit for the 2-point conversion, then it's worth the risk when there's so much of the game left to play.

There is no explanation for going for it midway through the third quarter when one point puts you up by a field goal. None.

And no, antdrewjosh, there would not have been a single (rational) person in here complaining about kicking the extra point in that circumstance. It would have been expected, an afterthought.

I'm not finding fault with the gameplan. I'm opining that Tomlin's in-game decisions have just as much influence on the final outcome as the players' lack of execution. Punting it there would have given the Steelers a much better chance to win, and quite possibly render the earlier player mistakes immaterial at the end of the day.
 
I know everyone had a problem with the 4th down play calling against the Ravens, but the out pass to Antonio Brown (on 4th and 2) was wide ******* open. A high school QB should be able to complete that pass. Everyone said "how can you not get the ball to your best player (Bell)" but we tried to get the ball to AB, not Dri Archer...

If the players would of did their job and make certain throws, catch certain passes, kicked certain FG's....then the resulting decisions would not have had to be made. I believe Tomlin thoughts were this was their best chance at winning. He had lost faith in his kicker and QB(throwing the ball). They might not get down in that area again. In the end we lost. Hopefully the whole team learned from it. Hopefully anyways.

Apparently Tomlin's biggest mistake was trusting his players to make a play.

I thought that this was a horrible decision but then I realized that had jones not gotten that terribad pick out of the way it may have come at a worse time. Lol
 
...and Tomlin's decision to go for the win, on the road, in San Diego, gave us a win.
 
In San Diego, I was surprised we did not try a very quick pass. I kinda think running it was stupid, but sometimes it works in your favor. I doubt anyone was expecting a run. I saw a cartoon on the SN Facebook page with Tomlin hauling his sack around in a wheelbarrow because he called a run with 5 seconds left.

Besides the fact that they came out lined up in the wild cat formation and then SD called a TO. Then they came back from the TO and ran the play from the wild cat formation..yeah. Most likely no one was looking for a run there.

That's a good point. We even telegraphed it, so maybe they thought no way are we going to run.
