PITTSBURGH -- Steelers defensive end Cam Heyward wore eye black to honor his late father, Craig "Ironhead" Heyward, for the second straight game, despite receiving a $5,787 fine last week for violating the NFL's uniform policy.

The eye black says "Iron" under one eye and "Head" under the other.

He faces an $11,576 fine for a second violation of the rules regarding the display of personal messages.

Craig Heyward, a former NFL fullback, battled cancer before his death in 2006.

Cam Heyward told ESPN that he was not given permission from the NFL to wear the eye black, but the league will hear his appeal of the original fine Tuesday. He is not sure whether he will get fined again.

Will he keep wearing it?

"That's the goal," Heyward said after the Steelers' 25-13 win over the Arizona Cardinals. "There have been others, and I'm not going to name any names, that have worn it to support cancer. I don't want to get involved in it, but it's bigger than me. I'm not going to shy away from the fight against cancer, and I'm going to support them in any way possible."

It's a nice gesture and it definitely gets the conversation going about cancer. I just don't see how paying the league $11.5k each week is doing anything to help "cure" it though. If anything, just take that $11k/week and donate it to cancer research or a hospital instead of lining Goodell's pockets even more.

Apparently some forms of cancer are more politically correct than others.

$5787. What a weird number for a fine. Does it come out of a 4 digit lotto machine?

What is disturbing about this is that last season the Bungles player with the daughter who had leukemia wore on his eye black all last season the words "LEAH STRONG" in honor of his daughters fight with cancer and he wasn't fined once.

This is what makes Goodell and the NFL front office look like a bunch of Bufoons!
IMO if you are honoring a loved o e it shouldn't be a fine. If you are advertising something that is completely different.

Word to the NFL...cmon guys lighten up!

Did Teebow wear Bible verses on his in the NFL? He did all the time in college.

What amazes me most about this is how the NFL not only is pooping on cancer awareness other than breast cancer(Which they get paid for) but they are pooping on the memory of an NFL player that died from cancer. The NFLPA should be SCREAMING about this.

Years back the NFL was very anti-Skull caps. I think the NFL banned them at one point. But what's the difference between black tape under the eyes and a tattoo on a player's face?
