I did not understand kicking the extra point at the end of the game. We were up 3 with no time left. A botched play would have have SD 2 points only right? I am just confused as to the purpose of the play.

I was talking about this elsewhere. If you go up by 1 with almost no time on the clock you basically shouldn't even kick or go for 2, right?

No, its still a "completion" of the score. Remember when the Seahawks won that insane MNF against Green Bay a few years ago with the replacement refs? They still had to kick the XP even though the game was essentially over

I think the only time you dont have to worry about the xp is during overtime..not sure why, though

In OT the game is automatically over cause its sudden death. If you're kicking the extra point with no time left and a 1 or 2 pt lead you simply take a knee because the defense can return the attempt for 2 pts. As someone said its just a completion of the scoring play.

Sudden death...duh lol. Thanks for clearing out my cobwebs on that one

Lol I was thinking about this too... with the new rules that allows defense to score on blocked XPs or fumbles or interceptions it may one day lead to teams simply taking the knee on these plays if 2 points can lose or tie the game... that is the correct strategy unless you are up by 3 or more

Has to do with the rules change that now allows the Defense to return a failed Point After Touchdown (1pt FG or 2pt) attempt for 2 points.
But like the others wrote, the leading team can simply take a knee.
Will be interesting to see if they refine the rule to not require a Point After Touchdown in cases where the lead can't be overcome by a Defensive score.

Nope they always had a kick after a Td in regulation, even after time reached 0:00... I am pretty sure it had to do with vegas... its a rare thing and honestly Tv sometimes didn't even broadcast it, but it was always happening

Yes. If you score a TD and it puts you up by 1 or 2 pts with no time on the clock. You victory formation the XP every fruking time!
