I know it sounds like an odd question... but I'm serious. Look what happened with our OLine with a change in offensive philosophy and a new (very talented) OLine Coach. Our DB's are in a similar state of disrepair as the OLine was a few years ago. Don't get me wrong... I think Carnell Lake is a great guy and was an amazing player. But is he getting it done as a DB Coach? Thomas? Cortez? Boykin? And those are just this year. Am I missing something?

You might be missing that Thomas/Cortez/Boykin are not exactly Troy/Ike/Clark. And that Munchak was working with 2 1st rounders and a 2nd.

Do we know Boykin is a failure???? WHY is he NOT playing? Real answer or just someone's opinion as to why??? I think there are better coaches out there, than Carnel Lake. But he also has made some improvement, with the level of help and injuries and lost FA players. Don't sell him to much short, Dri has that under control. Look at how much better this unit is as to what all the chicken littles said before the season started. Teams have NOT ran away from us or blown us away, as some predicted would happen. We have been in ALL the games we played thus far. Yes the secondary is the weak link on "D", but also the lowest talent on the team too. Look at it for what it's worth, how much better could another coach get them?? I would bet it is a minimal difference.

Our secondary is ranked 13th and our run defense is ranked 20th. We are 8th is points allowed (average of 18pts per game). We've allowed 7 TDs by way of passing plays (4 in the NE game) and 1 rushing TD. That's only 3 passing TDs in three weeks. I would say our secondary is playing well with all the talent concerns, and the injuries/changes, Coach Lake is working with. IMO Carnell Lake is doing a great job.

I'm really getting tired of Boykin not seeing the field though. That's annoying as ****

In a word ..NO
But the question still remains if it is due to an inferior bunch of players or a lack of coaching ability. Lake was one of my favorite players back in the day when he was teamed with Rod Woodson but the game is not the same as it was in the early 90's. I'm not saying we need to dump poor Carnell just yet but I'd put him on a shot clock and get some other opinions about his modus operandi.

We all know that high round draft picks can be stiffs and lower round picks can blossom into pro bowlers but the common thread is coaching and the ability of that coach to find that players weak spots and improve on them. So far, in his first 5 years...not so good.

To me a decent analogy for this situation might be "here's a bag of ****....... make some delicious cookies."

And yes, the Boykin issue has gone beyond baffling.

Is Boykin a problem player / bad locker room type of guy? Some thought he has issues with Chip Kelly, or better put Boykin has issues with Kelly.

I can't believe this Boykin situation has gone on this long and we still have no clue why he's not out there.

I heard this Mike Tomlin guy is a db guru.

From who? The only people I ever heard say that are people on this board to hate on him.

All you guys complaining about Boykin. I'm more upset Cortez Allen isn't a starter...

We use to have this saying, while we were growing up..." If I can't dazzle you with my brilliancy, then I'll baffle you with my bull ****" WHAT mode do you think coach Tomlin is in???

Very similar to the race car analogy of " If it don't run, chrome it."

There has to be a "root" problem on Boykin. I just wished someone could give the scoop on it, the TRUE scoop. But my grandpappy use to say "you wish in one hand and **** in the other, see which one fills up the fastest"

Maybe they only see Boykin as a slot guy. That's Gay's spot. And Cockrell has been playing pretty well.

Even if this is the case, wouldn't you think that the FO and coaching staff would have communicated about a role for Boykin prior to making a deal?

Maybe maybe not. Maybe he was bought into the fold as insurance. Their rookie was shelved. You have an opportunity to bring in Boykin you do it. Who knows if this trade happens if the rookie doesn't get hurt. Then you bring in Cockrell who is playing well. Other then the trade of a pick I'm not seeing why Boykin should be playing over anyone yet. I mean if Cockrell is playing better he should play.
