Yes we have issues on the defensive side of the ball but I hope it isn't as bad as it seems. On both sides of the ball we were playing backups and their backups against starters.

OK, I'll bite. Full disclosure: I haven't read those articles yet. Now, with that out of the way, I think the issue that I have with the "we weren't playing our starters" thinking as far as the defense goes is this:

1) You are installing new tactics/approaches on defense.
2) You have several new starters on defense.
3) You have not had even a quarter's worth of snaps where all of your presumptive starters on defense have been on the field together.
4) You have continued to "rest" some of these presumed starters during training camp and preseason games possibly at the expense of cohesion during the early part of the season.
5) After giving lip service to the idea that "all positions except a few" are open to be battled for, you have essentially not made Shamarko, Mitchell, Jarvis or, much as it hurts me to say this, Shazier actually FIGHT for their starting positions. You have failed to create a "sense of urgency" in these players and this attitude might carry over to the season.

Those are some of the fears that I live in in regards to the defense.

You have to separate the guys out that just hate Tomlin and blame him for everything.

My concern is that I did not see guys competing on Sat. against the Bills. I didn't like that. It seems like they went into the game not wanting to get anyone hurt. To not challenge anybody, to just allow completion after completion is does not advance the cause of this football team. It was a lousy job of coaching by an otherwise damn good coach.

You have to be honest.

Who would that be? I mean, I'm sorry. I really was supportive of Tomlin for his first couple seasons but truthfully he's regressed continually and regularly. He doesn't get better at anything. And he regresses in many key areas that the team was formerly strong in. Now. It CAN be argued that the team has improved from an offensive standpoint. I would hazard into that discussion minefield. However, then you have to get into the argument that the guy most responsible for that is a hire that Tomlin never wanted to make and a guy who's done so DESPITE epic failings on the draft board for the offensive line. In fact, aside from a really fortunate pickup in our Running Back (We think... it IS only his second year...) and an admittedly great wide receiver on the roster as well as an utter FU pothead who isn't going to play for a quarter of the year.W have Ben Roethlisberger once more running for his life behind Dave "I just may kill one of my own" DeCastro and "Center of the Week" as well as "Plug a Guard in HERE".

As for the defense... Wow. Just Wow. I'm sure Tomlin would have liked LeBeau to leave a bit earlier and ya, I guess it's unfair to lay everything at the head coaches' feet since he has coordinators to help him manage the troops but frankly these aren't even the things that most frustrate me about Tomlin. It's his complete failure to give a **** about the slow decline of the team in key areas. The fact that the defense is literally falling apart in front of him and he seems unphased really disturbs me. The fact that the team will UNDOUBTEDLY start out with no energy, no drive and no urgency the first 3 or 4 games this season really bothers me. When their back is against the wall, they'll start to pull their **** together but until then it will be club med.

Why is the pothead even playing preseason games? Why aren't they sitting his *** right now giving somebody who's going to have to contribute an opportunity got get reps and do something useful. Martavis should be running water cups to the rest of the team and folding towels in the ******* basement. Has he even been told he's ****** up? 1 year and he's already had three or 4 pot busts? Where has Tomlin been? How have they NOT been busting this kids *** about this?

A team doesn't need a ******** like Harbaugh, but they don't need a buddy either. I'd just like to see some actual improvement out of him in terms of his in game adjustments, his clock management, his game-planning, his front-season motivation. I could give a **** about preseason. I just want them to come out of the gate strong. I want them to take 21 pt leads in the 1st quarter and completely knock OTHER teams off their game plans for a change. How bout OTHER teams coaches start looking like deer in the headlights for a change. How'd THAT be?

Preseason games are hard to judge because some coaches go real vanilla and others gameplan to the nth degree. I remember when Sam Wyche drew the Ire of Cowher for basically playing his starters in the 4th to win the game...

Im less concerned about results than seeing how individuals and units played vs their respective counterparts... I just don't see physical superiority in many players and I don't see cohesion in units... that's what worries me, not the missed assignments or losses.

Aw, what a bunch of bullshit. Utter bullshit.

You had a team with a number of players who won Super Bowls. You know what they can do. I always get a kick out of the "he watched the decline" crap. Would've you cut Aaron Smith or TP or Hines or Ryan Clark earlier? Guys who won you lots of games? It is just stupid. And, you all act as if replacing talent is just as easy as snapping your fingers. Find me this team that has continually been able to replace SB talent and not gone through rough patches. I don't know what the **** you are trying to say about the OL which has shown much improvement. And how the hell does anyone know Tomlin didn't want to hire Haley? It is pure emotional conjecture by you and others.

As for Bryant, the guy is an adult. This is pro football. When do you expect guys to begin acting like adults? What was Tomlin to do? Move him into his house? How the hell do you know if they were or were not busting his ***? Maybe he just didn't listen. I bet that is Tomlin's fault. Bryant would've listened to coach____________ (insert here). Which is also BS. Every coach has this issue. It is just the way it is today.

Game adjustments. My favorite. When a team looks like it adjusts, do you realize that most of the time they are just executing the gameplan better?

Damn good??? Yes, you DO have to be honest, and "damn good" is NOT being honest.

Did I say great? I know Tomlin has warts. Nowhere did I say great.

Damn good is an apt description.

Really wasn't trying to make another Tomlin is good/Tomlin sucks thread. Just read the article and it highlighted to me that their starters played significantly more. Yes some people want the defense to play more together to work on things but maybe after Suisham Pouncey Adams and the nicks and bruises other guys have had this training camp Tomlin maybe saying screw this let's just get to the Patriots game as healthy as we can get. If a guy isn't healthy why risk it? This a young defense they are going to struggle at least go into it healthy. The hope is that they get better as the year goes along. Every one says Ben is a franchise guy well be a franchise guy and put points on the scoreboard til this defense is ready to hold their end of the bargain..

Love the optimism Ant. And I hope it is rewarded with a defense that becomes ready to hold their end of the bargain. For myself, as I said, I'm living in a few fears when it comes to the defense. And I didn't even get into the fact that the play of our 2nd and 3rd string guys says that we may be screwed if any of the first stringers go down. Either way, strong defense or weak defense, I'll be rooting for them.

Yep, these guys aren't winning one-on-one matchups and I'm not confident they'll be able to scheme around this.

I think that goes for all 32 teams if you get down to your third string anything you're probably going to have issues. Case in point on Fred Jackson's big run the Bills ran right at and thru LT Walton who was starting for Tuitt. Regular season that would of been Thomas replacing Tuitt. But the Steelers like Walton and wanted to see the kid against other team's starters. You wouldnt experiment like that in the regular season.

My biggest concern with the defense so far in preseason games has been NO TURNOVERS.

And that has to change. If this defense is going to stop the other team, it's going to come via a turnover.

I don't see how we have too many pics if the 10 yard LeBeau cushion remains the order of the day. I just don't get why we can't play these guys closer.

We need this guy to turn into the best guard in the NFL

Big Dan played the run pretty good.

Tomlin said he is a little concerned that his presumed starting safeties, Mike Mitchell and Shamarko Thomas, haven't been on the field at lot together in this preseason.

He's not, however, concerned enough to play them together Thursday against the Panthers, saying they got plenty of time together in the offseason.

We'll find out if that's the case in a week and a half in New England.

http://nflfromthesidelines.blogspot.com/2015/09/kind-of-newsy-day.html?m=1

The risk to get these guys on the field together is too much. Let them work it out as the season goes. There will be growing pains. But hopefully the more they play together the better the chemistry they will develop.

Why do you say that? curious.. I really cannot see the harm in having your game day starters on the field at the same time in the preseason. If only for a short time.

If they are both healthy by all means play but if they are nursing injuries why risk it? Thomas had a shoulder when Mitchell was healthy. Thomas got healthy and Mitchell was nursing an injury. It was more bad timing then anything. But my point was why play them if they not 100% just to say they played together in preseason. Is it worth it. It's not like they haven't had time together in voluntary workouts mini camps training camp. They have been identified as the starting safeties from the beginning.

That's exactly what I'm ******* talking about...

Watch them get their ***** handed to them against New England Great ******* idea Coach T. That'll ******* grow em up quick! Then they can all "go back to the lab" and count on "next man up."

Whatever you do, don't let them actually play together in some games to get an idea how an actual semi-realistic game unfolds. Let's throw them into a game against the cheatingest ******** in the league so they can be destroyed and demoralized on national television. That'll ******* do it.

But I know... Make sure you give Brady and his recievers a REALLY big cushion. He's probably going to want to go deep for this game so make sure you play everyone at least 10 to 15 yards off the line. Even the linebackers. Don't let them get deep on you. Give them that underneath stuff all day. Tom hates that ****.
