Per DK . Here's the blip.

• Don’t fear the salary cap. At least not too much. The trade for Josh Scobee, whose contract calls for $3.4 million though that’s expected to be reworked, has the Steelers left with roughly $8.5 million in projected remaining cap space once all players and the practice squad are signed.

wow how that low?

You take the top 51 players coming in at just under $135M.

IR salaries come off the books so we get Sushi's $3.665M and Grad's $1.883M off the top.

Not sure how Pouncey's salary works. Doesn't look like he's on the IR yet, but if he does go, that's another $4.296M I assume if he's designated to return, that number may count differently, or be counted in full upon his return.

Tell me about it.. Good to finally be out of salary cap hell. I wonder if 8 mil can buy a few good safties to play cover-2 in case ours can't.

where are you going to find those good safeties? we will be without draft picks next season

We are missing a 5th and a 6th... between them we would have like a 10% chance of finding a quality NFL player

that 5th can change to a 4th, easily. I doubt we get a good safety for anything less than a 3rd anyway

You're right. It's going to be a 4th. The problem with not having a 4th and a 6th is that you have nothing to trade up with if you see someone you want unless you are willing to trade your higher picks.

on the other hand, with so many young guys already on the roster maybe we don't need that many new picks, what the team might need could be had via trade (or wait for FA next season)

many have complained about the quality of draft picks, perhaps this forces them to bring in a few more experienced players as a result....

There may be a lot of young players on the roster, but there isn't much quality depth. With injuries and suspensions, the Steelers will enter the year without proven backups(or very weak backups) at running back, wide receiver, offensive line, defensive line and safety.

I would agree with what some of you said slightly disagree on some others.

I think we can all agree S is in need. And I am hoping come final cutdowns there is one capable vet sitting there, and the willingness to bring him in.

RB I think because Bell is out 2 games
and WR because Bryant is now out in stone for 4.

They still have holes all over the defense. They need CBs, safeties, DL, and probably OLB. And that doesn't count that they don't have a TE outside of Miller. I also haven't seen the FAs for next year.

If they are not going to use the cap space for players, they ought to bring forward someone's prorated bonus into 2015 and save the space for future years.

That would be great, but we'd have to rework a contract to do so. As of the signing dates of contracts, the payouts, roster bonuses, and prorated signing bonuses are set in stone.

Here's something I find very interesting:

We're currently about $8.5M under the cap.
That includes the $14.5M in dead money we are paying out this season.
As we sit today, our dead money for next year is $15K!

Cuts will increase the dead money amount, but we're going to be WAY under $14.5M since Woodley's $8.58M and Pola's $4.5M will be off the books next year!

Cap

Hopefully, next off season, we can grab a good corner or saftey.

I think the unused cap space rolls over to the next season, then those 8,5M won't be lost if not used for 2015

With Hartley and Golson moved to IR, our cap is now nearly at $9.4M.

Keep in mind, when figuring out next year's numbers, the salaries that didn't appear because of IR will show up the following year. It doesn't mean that the time missed will be counted against the cap, just their 2016 salaries will show back up against the cap: Sushi $2.97M, Golson $909,328, Zumwalt $626,213, Rogers 526,666, Hatchie $525,333, Clear $451,666, Davis $450,833, Hamilton $450K,
Gradkowski, Gathers, Hartley, Nelson, & Branchflower are not under contract next year.

With all that said, the salary cap for the Steelers in 2016 (top 51 players) is already at $142.31M. That's significantly higher than this year. So any space left over this season will help out our wiggle room for next season.

Pouncey will be the big swing number if he is IRed, though I'm interested to see how it counts if he's IR designated to return. His cap # is $4.296M, but if he comes back the same year, it is essentially a wash.

How much cap space is tied up by kickers this season?
