Since this is our third preseason will anyone show up on defense against Green Bay? Will our pass rush and coverage be as bad as we have shown in last two games? I watch other games and the defenses seem so much further ahead than what we have shown. Big test to see who wants to be a leader on defense with the offense of GB.

Gonna get a big dose of 2nd and 3rd string guys tonight. On defense and offense. It may be our third preseason game, but it's similar to the second in that there are still two more games left and the starters don't usually get extended work until the second to last game. So, what I'm looking to see is if those "reserve" guys show improvement.

well Tommytom said that he was going to start the game plan process, so that could factor in to the D making some plays............

or not

we'll see

this game and next game should be the ones we see starters play longer. I am interested to see any new wrinkles that Butler has been practicing. I am sure they are wanting to practice anything new in real game time positions.

In answer to the original question. yes I think we see a bit more aggression out of our defense today.

This D will be historically bad. It is what it is and I don't worry about it anymore. We will win/lose based on our offense putting up silly points.

This and the fact that the defense is working on a much more diverse set of base defenses. They have to forget to go automatically to.

..three down linemen with at least one linebacker blitzing, nickel unit on passing situations, a tackle-the-catch philosophy in the backfield, don't let anything get behind you in the secondary and a lot of Cover 3.

...and try to transition to a fast paced, changing sets every down defense that is not so predictable. Along the defensive line they are going from a two-gap to one-gap and the db's have to play a lot different in a cover 2 than the read and react cover 3. I just read where in 28 plays, the Steelers were in a three-man front 16 times, a four-man front six times, and the nickel six times. Only three times did Butler call the same front on back-to-back plays.

I say give it some time and enjoy the nuances of of a new system for a change. Only time will tell if it's any better but it for sure won't be instantaneous.

I am usually a pretty positive guy, but it wouldn't surprise me if the defense is worse than last year.

I may & hope I am wrong, but who is going to step up and give us the pass rush that is so desperately needed?

Jones is on the hot seat and I am not sure he understands the storm he is going to get from the public & the press if he doesn't produce.

If we can get pressure on the QB we will be fine. If not we're doomed.

Our Defense is just bad. Might as well get use to it. No Butler wrinkle is going to fix it.

I would like to see some improvement, not expecting the world here. Just some improvement. The cover two issues will be badly exposed here if they play like they have. Rogers will eat up cover two with a soft pass rush. I can live with cover two giving up a lot of points, but if it slow points where our offense sits on the sidelines and no turnovers, this team is doomed.

I see a little stronger "team" defense in the long run. For todays game, weak to sad as they are still playing with the packages and the substitutes. (did I say palaying with the package? )

Salute the nation

I dunno, pre-season is pre-season. The Ravens D just got steamrolled last night by the Eagles. Their coach Dingleberry Harbaugh was just "ho-hum, yeah we're looking at our guys and implementing things, it's pre-season..blah blah" I think maybe we're a bit further along than that, but I still wouldn't put too much stock into what we see - or don't see - out there this afternoon.

I like the young corners -- doran grant from all accounts has good technique and is able to locate the ball in the air and at least makes a play on the ball and does not panic which usually leads to a PI. Also #30 Fogg has had about 6 or 7 ints in latrobe and seems to have a knack for being around the ball. Per sources he has good route recognition for a rookie (that is something you have or don't have and he apparently has it). Also, LJ Fort seems to be a playmaker as well. I'm also hoping Shade Tree McCullers continues his progression he collapses the pocket and it will be nice to see him get extra reps now that Tuitt will be rested until game 1 to recoup from his minor injury from the Green Bay game. I'm hoping Cortez Allen has found his Mojo back and can play like he is capable of. I see this D improving game by game and hopefully our turnovers and sack #s are up, way up from last year. Turnovers by our Defense will be huge this year with the weapons Ben has to play with this season. Go steelers I will go out on a limb to say we go 10-6 or 11-5 and win the North.

Optimism? Optimism?! OPTIMISM?!! Berger, Berger, Berger ... don't you know that this is the place where Steelers optimism comes to die? lol.

Seriously though, I like your thinking and it would be great if it came to pass just as you describe.

He's new. Give it time and we will turn him to the dark side.
