With Golson opening camp on the pup list for the 1st week, many here believing a week of missing camp learning the playbook and practicing at the nfl speed with the position coaches sets the player in reality a month back, so with Golsen out till likely the end of the week, I think the CB that gets the best opportunity to win the dime CB job is, with Blake taking the slot i, I fee is BW WEBB, he has been in the league the longest among'st from the crop, It would be great if Grant leaps u but I think with Web being on the ps all year last year i jobs to lose now

his competition is rookies Senqez Golsen, Doran Grant, Jordan Sullen just picked up was on Den PS, ran a 4.3 (hybrid FS/CB sorta like Adrian Amos, Kevin Fogg ran a 4.3, spent some time in ( ps experience with fins ),

Now its time to see whether Webb was a bust taken by Dallas in the 3rd and cut and not kept on the ps, was he really that bad?

he has a great chance to make the team esp with a ST spot open with Ross Ventrosse cut recently, so the team needs a gunner.

I think it will be best grant goes on the ps, and the team is active in making sure no one snags him and makes every effort to activate him I see week 1 6 DB rotation as
Allen
Gay
Blake
Webb
Mitchell
Allen/Shamarko

October
Allen
Gay
Golsen
Blake
Mitchell
Thomas

I think a week set back being a month is a tad on the steep side. Football is football. These college programs these kids come from aren't exactly pop warner we are talking about. While I wouldn't say missing a week is a good thing, but lets not forget they started almost a week early I'd say playing the dime/ nickle (which is mostly what they drafted him for) is well within his reach.

Well it is good we have that extra game this preseason then...He will only be set back three weeks then....right? No wait.......never mind.

Boykin means Golsons injury is going to keep him out at least another week and probably end his chances of contributing much this year. Don't know much about Boykin, though.

Boykin is arguably the best slot CB in the league. Can't believe we got him for a 5th rounder...

He doesn't want to play just the slot. He's been bitching in public for the past two years that he wants to play outside as well. He is also in the last year of his contract and reportedly knows how good he is and wants paid. That's why he was traded for a conditional 5th round pick that could be a 4th rounder if he plays enough.

Well, if he ends up being good enough to play outside, who knows how things will go. It's a good problem to have.

Or think of it this way, if he wants that big contract he must perform wherever the Steelers play him. Bitching now, on a second team after being traded for (allegedly) bitching, isn't going to help your cause.

I think this also shows in the practices they had if they were to go to dime set, eithier a 3-2-6 or 4-2-5 from what see early on nethier \grant nor Webb looked good and if they would have to cover a speedy or vertical threat they did not feel any comfort thus they made the trade.

Will allen is a reliable smart guy that depending on the offence in a dime situation mostly will go in as the 6th DB, hopefully Thomas could be a interesting in the box s/lb paired with shazier if we ever show a 4-1-6 look say
DE Dupree NG Ms mccullers LE Heyward olb shazier lb/s S.thomas CB Allen CB Gay Slot Blake dime boykin mitchell ss W.Allen

That is a phenomenal trade. a 5th or a 4th. I looked back. 4ths on this team have less than 25% chance of being an impactful starter or even a starter at all. more than 60% are completely meaningless players. If this guy can fill the spot, Who cares where he is next year. Great move.

I think this move has Butler written all over it. When Dick was here we never made a splash like this on the defensive side.

It is not a splash. It is a requirement. The slot corner back that they spent a second on is done for the season or out for a significant period of time. It is typical of many moves the Steelers make out of necessity. They could have brought Harrison or Keisel back much earlier last year.

I think I remember Butler saying he was going to do things a little differently than Dick did. Dick would never have done this. He always thought he could take anything you gave him and make it work. Butler realized already that old way won't work. The changing of the guard has paid off already. And yes...while it might have been a requirement it also was a SPLASH move.

When this all unravels Boykin will be a starter at CB with CortezAllen. Big Play Will Gay will be your slot CB where he belongs. All the others will be depth, Golson, Blake, Grant and Webb. Boykin instantly makes this secondary better. He's a playmaker that needs the opportunity to start.

I don't believe DC's have anything to do with these decisions other than maybe begging the HC for help, but for the record Farrior came in '02 and DL rejoined the team in '04. Bottom line is this. The force unit has 5 first rounders a 2nd rounder a strong journeyman FA and an albeit aged but still a once superstar OLB. If the pass defense flounders you can hardly fault the cover unit which is composed of largely late picks, castoffs and projects.

I agree with this. There is no way the DC has anything at all to do with bringing in FAs.

You don't think the FO or HC asks the DC for input on the potential trade target? They just get a guy and say "Here you go, deal with it."? This may be more true when you have a guy like Butler as the DC over a 50 year veteran of the NFL, but to think the DC isn't consulted seems silly to me. Of course, the FO/HC could listen to any objections and make the trade anyway, so final decision doesn't fall on the DC, but I can't imagine he has no input.
