I don't see a 4-3 working at all with these guys. They have better ILBs than DL. Right now there aren't 4 4-3 DL on the team. Dupree is not a 4-3 LB. He's a pure 3-4 OLB. They also aren't giving up on Jones who is another pure 3-4 OLB.
I think the only thing Jones has been so far is a pure waste of a draft pick. Heyward could likely play very well in either a 3-4 or 4-3, Tuitt as well, McCullers has shown some ability to jump to a penetrating player as well. McClendon who has not been the Anchor that Hampton or Hoke were would also likely do better as a penetrating tackle. Dupree has the speed and agility to cover as does Shazier. Timmons has done so in the past from inside backer. My point is these guys are athletic enough to make the change to other schemes not that they have done so in the past. The comments on Heward when he was selected were he was not a 3-4 player by many posters on here.
I would not rule out anything at this point regarding the players we have as doing what they were doing in the past has not produced great results and trying something different may still not produce great results but it does have the chance of doing so, more so than doing the same thing and expecting different results does.
I just don't see it. Jones maybe a waste but he isn't getting cut any time soon. Dupree is wasted in a 4-3 because you are relying more on your DL to get to the QB. He is a pass rushing machine IMHO. So you are throwing away 2 1st round picks by switching to a 4-3. Also with one less LB you are even wasting your ILBs where you have some depth.
Right now they aren't that good at anything. I wouldn't try to get very technical with them. They need to make up their mind what they want to be and get good at it. But keep it simple.
I thought of him more as a solid run defending OLBer with pass rushing potential.
I didn't see enough pass rushing productivity in college to call him a pass rushing machine.
Not that he doesn't have potential.
But IMO right now that is all it is potential.
