Winter is Coming: Scientist Says Sun Will Nod Off in 15 Years

Posted: 07/13/2015 3:30 pm EDT Updated: 4 hours ago

Might want to start stockpiling those down jackets: The sun could nod off by 2030, triggering what scientists are describing as a “mini ice age.”

Professor Vlentina Zharkova of Northumbira University presented the frigid findings at the National Astronomy Meeting in Llandudno, Wales. Modern technology has made us able to predict solar cycles with much greater accuracy, and Zharkova’s model predicts that solar activity will drop by more than half between 2030 and 2040.

Solar activity was thought to be caused by a turbine-system of moving fluid within the sun. In search of a more accurate system of prediction, Professor Zharkova and her team discovered fluctuating magnetic waves in two layers of the sun. By studying the data of the dual waves, she says, predictions are far more precise.

“Combining both waves together and comparing to real data for the current solar cycle, we found that our predictions showed an accuracy of 97 percent,” said Zharkova, whose findings were published by the Royal Astronomic Society.

Using this method, she and her team discovered that there will be far less solar activity in sun cycles 25 and 26, leading to a prolonged period of solar dormancy

“In cycle 26, the two waves exactly mirror each other -- peaking at the same time but in opposite hemispheres of the Sun. Their interaction will be disruptive, or they will nearly cancel each other. We predict that this will lead to the properties of a ‘Maunder minimum’,” said Zharkova.

The Maunder Minimum is the title given to periods of time when sunspots are rare. It last occurred between 1645 and 1715, when roughly 50 sunspots were recorded, as opposed to the standard 40,000. That time was marked by brutal, river-freezing temperatures in Europe and North America.

Bush's fault. Al Gore will save us.

Sun activity and the earth's magnetic field ( Which protects us from all sorts of stuff and has weakened a little over time ) have far more impact on the heating or cooling of the earth than " green house gasses "

Having said that, air pollution is a real problem in China, and India. Sometimes its an issue in the USA. We all breathe the same air, so I'd focus here.

And where is air pollution worst here? Liberal Bastions like California!

This just in:
The space probe has determined that Pluto is cold. Boosh and SUV's blamed.

Al Gore, pick up the white courtesy phone..

Snow in Australia as Antarctic chill sweeps eastern states

Temperatures have plummeted to more than 10 degrees below average in places, while Sydney has had its coldest July weather in 44 years now has fallen in parts of Australia where such falls are so rare the weather bureau does not have the tools to measure it as temperatures plunged to more than 10 degrees below average.

Antarctic air pushed up through central New South Wales and on to Queensland – known as the Sunshine State – over the past week bringing on a winter cold front not seen in some parts since the mid-1980s

Canadian Climate Change Arctic Expedition Derailed Due to Heavy Ice

A carefully planned, 115-day scientific expedition on board the floating research vessel, the CCGS Amundsen, has been derailed as the icebreaker was called to help resupply ships navigate heavy ice in Hudson Bay.

They have nothing that hasn’t been massaged, altered, or “averaged” in some fashion that destroys any value the original data may have had.

Also, you can’t get an accurate reading off concrete and blacktop...

21Steelers, if the dunce cap fits ...

The article you linked noted in part, "It’s also worth mentioning that Zharkova’s findings have not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal, so her conclusions haven’t been vetted and refined."

Meanwhile, your linked article is not a research study at all, consists of nothing more than anecdotal comments, and will never qualify for peer-review publication.

So I guess we are well-advised to simply ignore the article you cited, no?

Prediction of Rapid Sea Level Rise Won’t Change Global Climate Talks

A new study predicting 10 feet of sea level rise by the century’s end isn’t supported by the mainstream scientific community.

Mainstream climate scientists say the report appears speculative and is not in sync with the leading understanding of melting sea ice.

Study Predicts Decades Of Global Cooling Ahead

A new study out of the United Kingdom predicts the Earth is about to go through a major climatic shift that could mean decades of cooler temperatures and fewer hurricanes hitting the United States.

This cooling phase in the Atlantic will influence “temperature, rainfall, drought and even the frequency of hurricanes in many regions of the world,” says Dr. Gerard McCarthy. The study’s authors based their results on ocean sensor arrays and 100 years of sea-level data.

Nothing to see here, move along...I know the routine, it's just another round of faulty data and baseless statistics thrown together by corrupt scientists wanting to make a quick buck. Keep on believin' :gangbang:

July was warmest month on Earth in 136 years, NOAA says

Another month, another record high for global temperatures, U.S. government scientists announced Thursday.

Earth’s average surface temperature for the month of July was 61.86 degrees Fahrenheit (or 16.61 degrees Celsius). That made July the hottest month since meteorologists began keeping track way back in 1880, according to a new report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

July’s average temperature was 1.46 degrees F higher than the average for the 20th century and 0.14 degrees F above the previously hottest month, which occurred in 1998.

The new record was fueled by the oceans. Across the globe, the average sea surface temperature in July was 62.85 degrees F, 0.13 degrees higher than the previous monthly record (set in July 2014) and 1.35 degrees higher than the average for the 20th century. All 10 of the hottest months for sea surface temperatures have occurred since April 2014, the NOAA report noted.

Temperatures on land contributed too, coming in 1.73 degrees F above the 20th century average. That was high enough to rank as the sixth-hottest July on land since 1880, NOAA said.

Africa experienced its second-hottest July on record, with new records set in some eastern and central regions of the continent. Portions of northern South America, southern Europe, central Asia and the western U.S. also saw record high temperatures, according to the report.

The first seven months of the year ranked as the hottest January-to-July period since records began in 1880, edging out the previous record high set in 2010 by 0.16 degrees F. Average surface temperatures for both land and sea set new records as well, NOAA said.

Since the start of the year, “every major ocean basin observed record warmth in some areas,” the report said.

The report bolstered predictions from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center that an El Niño is likely later this year. In July, surface temperatures in the central Pacific around the equator were about 1.8 degrees F higher than the recent 30-year average.

Last week, the Climate Prediction Center said the chances that the Northern Hemisphere will experience El Niño conditions this winter were greater than 90%. The odds that it will continue into the spring stand at about 85%, the CPC said in a report.

Uhhh ... and? The 6th hottest July means what?

What happened the other 5 times?
