Makes sense, we already know what rudy brings so this frees up more game time for Howard and Allar

from the coach

Yeah, we're going to play the two young guys for the Jets game, that's going to be our focus," McCarthy said. "Will Howard will go first. I think you understand they're young, Will didn't get to play last year. Drew's a first-year player, we've got two veterans I feel really good about with Aaron and Mason. Saw what I needed to see from Mason last week, I've talked highly about Mason really since the spring. I really want to max out the opportunities with both Will and Drew."

I think this probably means the #1 and #2 qb positions are set barring a trade.

It's looking that way unless Howard or Allar blow McCarthy away over the next few weeks.

Maybe this is their chance, though Im not sure what to make of Howard starting over Allar.

Hopefully, they both get series with the same receivers and blockers.

Per tim benz :
Quoting Rudolph regarding Fridays game:

Rudolph on Howard & Allar: "I'm very aware that the fanbase is starved for a franchise QB. People want to have hope for the future beyond this year. We've got two great QBs who are young and progressing. I really am jealous of the structure they have had and this program and this QB-grooming system the way that Coach McCarthy has done it because I feel that they have made a lot of strides. I'll be rooting them on Friday"

what an elegant way to throw coolshades under the bus, I really like it. Who else thinks Rudolph has a career in the booth after he hangs'em up?

Love the attitude as well as the endorsement for the system in place. It's actually crazy to see how long Rudolph has been with the Steelers as a backup. Not the dream of being a starting QB, but he's carved out a nice career for himself as a QB2.

That's a really mature pro answer actually.

Rudolph has always been a good teammate and a solid NFL backup QB. Love the backhanded yet not-so-subtle jab at MT.

Why? Howard has been ahead of Allar on the depth chart since the spring.

I mean, this may mean they are showcasing Howard.. I dont believe they will keep 4.
If mason was on the block, they probably are trying to pimp him, not hide him..

Allar is still super raw... yeah he looked good out there, but dude just had all his mechanics rebuilt... he wont be ready this year for a significant role.. he is almost certainly locked in QB3

So yeah, play Howard a ton... see what he has got and if you are keeping Arod and Mason, maximize his value..

If he looks exceptional at QB1, maybe then thats a different story, but if not dont just cut the guy.. trade him... preferably to the NFC just in case...

As gor Rudolph, he was a prolific College system QB.
He was never going to be a Big Ben type with instincts and playmaking pizazz. He operates best in a structured rhythm passing system. That was not something Tomlin was ever going to embrace.

Rudolph isnt going to become a franchise qb, but if HCMM wants a vet that will follow the system to the tee, he will probably stick with him as the backup..

$$17,515,905 career earnings in NFL contracts and just turned 31. He should be able to squeeze out at the minimum a couple more one year contracts around the league. Ride it as long as you can Rudy. Like you said, not the dream of a starter, but that type of $$$$ is a dream a whole lotta people in this world would certainly have. Never mind the stories I’m sure he could tell.

I'm glad I don't have to make the decision. I guess it comes down to if they really feel they have a chance to compete for a championship, who gives you the best chance to win a game to two if Rodgers has a short term injury. I would think that is still Rudolph at this point.

Rudolph couldn't beat out Will Levis in Tenn, was a backup to Trubisky & Pickett. If Aaron goes down, I'd MUCH rather roll with Howard or Allar than Rudy. Trade him please.
