Preseason Reminders

I dont disagree with you, but that is what we are looking for, is it not? I don't think we are looking for the next Mike Tomczak...no offense to Mike he was " servicable" but I dont think that's the aim.

I think its semantics. The term franchise qb is now a second contract qb. I dint buy that. There are many qbs that can win a playoff game and some that can win a championship in right circumstance (Sam Darnold) but few that can be tge main reason. My opinion that is a franchise qb. Ill settle for a second contract guy that can win playoff games.

I think it's someone you can build an offense around knowing they are capable beyond just a journeyman status. In other words you plug in different receivers, different offensive scheme, different coaches and they do well no matter what. It's not just Brady,Manning, Mahomes...it's Hurts, Herbert, Maye, Darnold, Purdy, Goff, maybe Love. Any of those guys in the right circumstances could carry a team to a Lombardi. Mason Rudolph can not....no matter the circumstances.

I mention Mason in the context of the thread which is what we saw from the two young guys in a pre season game. Mason looked All-World at Oklahoma State against bad corner back play in the Big 12...gets to the big leagues...not so much. The guys I mentioned are all "franchise" guys as I define it. And that is; you can build a team around them and know they will perform. You can't build a team around Mason because of his glaring limitations...and there are many Masons in the NFL.
 
That's a fair assessment Gildong but I think the term is being used to anyone who gets a second contract now. As in the price of rice for a second contract on a qb is elite money at the position. Now I dont know what Howard or Allar is. Its too early to anoint or damn either. Im confident after a year McCarthy will know uf they need to drsft or not and frankly willl have a whole hell of a lot more info then on any college prospect.
 
Side note. Kyler Murray was considered a franchise guy. Certainly paid like one. Was drummed out of AZ. Has strong possibility of being a playoff guy snd putting up numbers in Min. Is he a franchise guy?
 
The past 10 years of Tomlin preseasons were so predictable. Wash, rinse, repeat. Tuning up the vets, same song, same dance.
This year is something new. It’s fun to watch Allar and Howard. There is new excitement with this preseason. As I have mentioned in the other post of my thoughts, I always watch preseason differently. Especially this year.
I’m watching for possible tendencies. I look at the trenches and the game within the game. I know it was only 1 preseason game, other than the penalties and shakiness on special teams, the offense and defense appears more prepared under McCarthy in one preseason game than any of the past 10 years.
I’m looking forward to the next couple of games as well as the first 4 games to see how things unfold.

The Steelers were prepared to play Thursday night. After the first offensive series with Rudolph, they settled down and found their rhythm.

I’m looking forward to Fridays game vs the Jets to see how they build off of this game. What adjustments to special teams and adjustments to toning the penalties down. I look more at this game as more and longer auditions for players looking to make the cut.

This is the stock I put into these games and how I evaluate them for myself.

Agreed. I rambled some in my post and didn't explain everything well, but I mentioned Mason. And the reason I mentioned him was he looked great coming out of college(much like Howard and Aller look in pre season) to the point the team thought they had found their guy...and look how he turned out. So, we don't know at this point what we have. The physical tools are there for both, but it takes more than that.

One thing is for sure...and don't get me wrong I don't want to bash Tomlin for the sake of bashing Tomlin, but we now have someone in the driver's seat who actually knows what he's looking at when it comes to QBs. If neither of the two young uns are franchise material McCarthy know what to look for in someone who is.

I don't know what will become of Murray, but DeShaun Watson comes to mind as well. He was the prototypical " Big Ben" type coming out of college. Could break out of the pocket and make incredible plays. Bad coaching, bad footwork that was never addressed, and a bunch of personal issues derailed him.

I say that as if his career is over. I know it's not, but I see a rapid downhill slide in his future. I don't think he'll ever be elite when by appearances he had every reason to be. The point is there are a lot of variables.

Hard to pick "the guy." Even for someone like McCarthy, but he is far more qualified than what we had.

My ***** about Mason is they never really gave the guy the full chance after Ben. They went with Mitch and KP. Who frankly ended up being no better. It was all about the let's stay relevant attitude of Tomlin. They shpukd have been let's see what we are with Rudy. If he sucks let's go to the bottom.

Just to add, Ben should definitely be in that group of “Franchise” QB list you presented.

You're right. I was thinking current QBs when I made my list in that post . And I mentioned Brady, Mahomes and Manning because those are the guys SteelerSask2 brought up. Ben absolutely belongs in the former franchise QB list.
