Max Iheanachor OT Arizona State - B

Max is a boom or bust pick. He could be the best tackle in the draft as that is his upside. Hell, he could move to LT and still be the best tackle in the draft. Rare size, speed, and movement skills. But he could also never see the field or if he does be a disaster as he is so raw and his technique is so bad that right now he wins with athleticism. I don't think he can rely on that in the NFL. I don't hate the pick by any means I just prefer safer picks with our first round selection.

Photo of Germie Bernard

Germie Bernard WR Alabama - A-

Germie is a very safe pick imo and should immediately be our starting slot receiver. He is an exceptional blocker, A+ route runner, and has glue for hands. His top end speed is not great but he's fast enough and being a burner is not his game. High Floor type of player.
Photo of Drew Allar

Drew Allar QB Penn State - B+

Another boom or bust pick but this time in the third round. Allar's value greatly varied by each big board you saw. His 2024 campaign was much better than his injury shortened 2025. Allar is a big of an enigma as his skillset seemed to fit in with a pro style drop back passing system. Instead he played in a RPO system that really would have been better for a run oriented passer. On top of that Allar didn't have much in the way of receiving help and ended up relying mostly on his TE's especially Tyler Warren as the receiving core really was deficient. I think the offense the Steelers will run under McCarthy will fit Allars skills much better than how Penn State used him in Happy Valley. I would not put him in as a day one starter and I wouldn't hand him anything. I would have him and Will Howard fight it out for #2 with Rodgers if he comes back or Rudolph if Rodgers doesn't come back. Let them compete.
Photo of Daylen Everette

Daylen Everette CB Georgia - A-

Daylen is kind of an under the radar kind of player. He was an A+ run support DB and only gave up 31 receptions last year. His change of direction and speed should make him versatile enough to play nickel but in the big picture his future likely will be at the outside CB position.
Photo of Gennings Dunker

Gennings Dunker OL Iowa - A

A for the pick but A+ for the mullet. The more I watch film of this kid the more I like it. He is a nasty road grader in the run game and has enough strength, agility and sand in his pants to keep your QB clean. Very high floor kind of player.

Kaden Wetjen PR/KR Iowa - C+

I don't mind using a pick on a return man but I don't like the value at where we got him. I really think we could have got him pretty late on day three. That said we sured up the return game.
Photo of Riley Nowakowski

Riley Nowakowski FB Indiana - C

Again, I don't mind the player but I feel this too is a later day three value. Nowakowski should be able to lead block but more importantly he should be able to help in the passing game as he has very good hands.

Gabe Rubio DL Notre Dame - D

I really hope this works out but the traits aren't really there to potentially be a backup defensive lineman. He does have heavy hands and a good punch and should be decent in run defense but he doesn't offer much of anything in pass defense.

Robert Spears-Jennings S Oklahoma - B+

Decent value here on a guy with all the physical tools you look for in a DB. He should contribute on special teams and if you can get him to read and react in the passing game maybe you can get him coached up to start one day.
Photo of Eli Heidenreich

Eli Heidenreich RB/WR Navy - B+

I really didn't know too much about this kid predraft. Knew he was in that late day two UDFA realm. Watching the film the kid gives everything he has on the field. He is quicker than you would expect and is more agile than you would think. I feel he is a guy you might be able to design a few plays for where he comes in at RB and spread him into the slot or bring him into the slot and run a jet sweep with him. He might even have some return ability that hasn't been tapped into yet. But I do know watching how much being a Pittsburgh Steeler meant to him I am 100% cheering for him to make it!

I give them all an A+.....until proven otherwise. Go STEELERS!!!!!!

I will say after reading your pre-draft notes on Allar I am excited we took a chance on him in the 3rd. If this was a Tomlin pick I wouldn't be. The new regime has my hopes up. Get it done Big M!!!

I had similar grades. This comes out to about a B average. Push down Wetjen and Nowakoski one spot each, don't draft Rubio, and draft a player with better upside in the 4th round and I think everyone feels better with the draft.
Yeah, I’m not criticizing the draft or players. Just my personal opinion is that we might have missed out on value. I hope all ten are pro bowlers and my grades look stupid 5 years from now.

What do you like about him?
I like what they said about it. A perfect fit for the 3-4. To me it was an acknowledgement that we had lost our way on our defensive scheme. My hope is that the hybrid Tomlin Tampa 2 is history.

I don't know **** about the player. I like the focus on the NT position in the 3-4

I agree throwing that 💩 Tomlin defense out the door will be a huge improvement

Solid take on the draft. I may have actually graded one or two others lower. And you're right; it isn't the player that I may disagree with; it's the timing of the picks. At least two picks were real head scratchers. And c'mon! Rubio? Just a horrible pick. No way to sugar coat that one. Terrible.

A friend asked me today how I would grade our draft and I gave it a C.

I think Iheanachor will eventually be looked back on as a solid pick, and Germie is a good fit. But it's mostly going to be Allar who makes or breaks this draft. I would have added Dominique Orange, the big DT from Iowa State, in that spot. Emmanuel Pregnon with the #85 pick made sense to me, but they addressed IOL later with Dunker, so I guess I'm OK with that.

Day 3 is where more question marks come in. Wetjen was taken way too high. I would've grabbed Skyler Bell there. Rubio probably wouldn't have been drafted....I take Taylen Green in the fifth, and Nowakowski who is still probably still on the board in round 6. The two seventh round guys are fine for flyers.

All-in-all, I'd give the draft a C+ with a lot of room for improvement if Max and Drew develop.

He is not a NT though, he's Aaron Smith size without his talent , yet

One thing I have to say about Rubio.. is that when he was healthy and got opportunities he was very noticeable on that defensive line for the fighting Irish..
As mentioned, the kid has absolutely the weight (although could be a couple inches taller) and skill set to be a successfuldefensive end in our 34 scheme..
And yes, if you put number 91 on his jersey and change the colors, his mannerisms on the field of play does look like Aaron Smith.. and remember it took Aaron Smith a couple years to reach his potential, and I believe Rubio can follow in the same path.

Here’s some tape of a kid you tell me he doesn’t honestly remind you of Aaron Smith..

I give their draft overall a B+.

Quick Side-by-Side Comparison
PlayerHeightWeightNotes on Build/Role
Aaron Smith6'5"298 lbsTall & leaner DE
Casey Hampton6'1"325 lbsShorter, dense NT/DT power player
Gabriel Rubio6'5"321–322 lbsTall & heavy; combines length of Smith with mass closer to Hampton
Key takeaways:
  • Rubio is the closest physical match to a blend of the two legends: he has Aaron Smith’s height/length but carries weight much nearer to Casey Hampton’s powerful build. This could make him a strong candidate for 3-4 defensive end or base 4-3 tackle roles in Pittsburgh’s scheme.
  • Hampton was noticeably shorter and stockier, built for pure interior disruption.
  • Smith was the longest and lightest of the three, emphasizing edge rush and pursuit.

Nice chart super Dave..
I didn’t realize the kid was that tall obviously…

I really believe Steeler nation is gonna be surprised by this kid’s abilities… if I was Logan Lee, I would be a little nervous right now..

And as a note about my video, I posted.
The outstanding plays he’s making is against several running backs that are now in the NFL… and against teams that are Ball State or Montana State..

Solid write up. I mostly agree. I graded it slightly lower than you because I dont have any idea how this staff will do at developing some of these raw talents...with the last staff, id be more down on taking a developmental OT after botching Broderick Jones... Allar has hope only cause its McCarthy... and guys like that late developmental Safety would have been written off because of the sheer number of flubs with those kinds of DBs...

I honestly have no clue how this staff will handle things...

3/4 end is all about Technique.. Aaron Smiths value was he was the most technically sound 3/4 end ever... you dont match measurables at 3/4 DE... you have to see them play in-the system to know ... and most 3/4 end rookies are basically useless for a season till they get everything down...

Valid point man..
Notre Dame does not play a 34 defense so Rubio does need to learn that particular technique skill set..
Not implying that he’s gonna be in our rotational defensive line make up this season, but what I’m saying is guys on the second level or behind that part of our roster like a Logan Lee need to be aware of the competition that’s coming..

I think Big Snack had a much lower center of gravity that was key to his success.

Hopefully Big Gabe can provide part of DL anchor that has been missing vs the run over the past decade.

I hear ya man
We absolutely ignored our ability to get better at stopping to run this draft, and as you all know, I was a strong proponent of using our first two pics to fill that need..
We still need a pure nose tackle to make this 34 defense the best it can be.. and it’s not gonna be this year..

I think you are going to find that issue was never talent related... it was scheme and technique... it showed up coinciding with our defensive gurus overhauling the line scheme that had been in place since the blitztburgh days, to one where the DLinemen weren't eating blocks and gaps and were " stopping the run on the way to the QB"
