If you look at our pass rush and secondary, you could say its loaded with upside and unproven younger players.

Will Butler opt to blitz and count on the pass rushers, or will he play it conservative and prevent big plays with so many new faces in the secondary playing?

I guess will find out once the season starts. Most new defensive coordinators say they will be aggressive.

Butz will be anything but concervative.I think he will incorporate multiple blitzs in his defense and especially if Bud Dupree can crack the starting lineup which I wouldn't e at all surprised if he does. I think you will see much of what Dick has done but with some new wrinkles and the younger guys will be starting quicker. None of this crap of waiting years because the defense is so complicated. We should see lots of youngsters get a lot of playing time particularly guys like Golson,Grant, Tuitt,McCuellers, Shazier and Bud. I'm excited to see Butz's stamp put on this defense. This move was over due a couple years imo. I still love ya Dick but it was time to go. You were the best.

I really believe the guys we started started because they were better than what ever else we had. Jarvis and Shazier were younger but did not get it done for example. Both also got injured and I'm sure that slowed them down. Right now the big reason to play the young guys is they are the best at their positions, we no longer have much in the way of veteran talent on the team.

I know we're not going to a 4-3 but I want to see McLendon, Heyward, Big Dan and Tuitt on the field at the same time. If Dan and Tuitt continue to improve, that would be a very formidable 4 man front to stop. At least, they can sprinkle it into games to add some wrinkles.

Blitz, blitz, blitz. You can't hide a secondary with lots of players in coverage anymore. The QB's are too good. Bring them to the line and send or drop them sometimes. Just don't line up in bases and bring blitzes from that. The worst is the delayed secondary. God i hate it.

The one thing we got away from the past few years is blitzing DB's and safeties - at least it seemed that way to me. Would like to see a return to that with guys like Mitchell and Shamarko and some of the corners. Just sprinkle it in there to create confusion in the backfield...

I'm thinking that with a lot of younger players it will be easier to be aggressive than to sit back, recognize an offense and adjust. See the QB drop back? Go kill him. See the guy the QB handed off to? Go kill him too. See the guy the QB threw a pass to? Run over to him as fast as you can and kill him.

Another guy we might see in the line up is Gethers, Labs was talking about him and Big Dan and he is supposedly even bigger than Dan, I believe the line was Blocking out the sun.

I too am mvery excited about our new DC. I hope he isn't just a mirror of Dick L. (love yaz, but bye bye). I'm sure Butler will want his own stamp on th "D", so give him a little learning curve. Otherwise, dial it up, play the kids if merit.

Salute the nation

I envy teams that can get consistent pressure rushing 4 men. The 3-4 definitely has its place but we have been week in coverage and pass rush the past couple of years and it has made us look terrible. We have to rush 5 to get any kind of consistent pressure.

Lol "Butz", huh? Were you guys pals in high school or something? :highly_amused:

For us, the best defense might be a good offense. We could have as many as three DB's in the dime that are either rookies ( Golson and Grant ) or have little game time ( S Thomas ).

A possible strategy might be to be aggressive when the other team is backed up. I hate it when our DB's play off and get nickel and dimed all day. Perhaps Butler will become a bit more conservative once the other team crosses the 50-yard line.

It might be tougher to nickle and dime a defense made up of guys that can and will intercept passes from time to time.

Bountygate...I LIKE IT!!!

You might be on to something. Tomlin as a DC in Minnesota did not exactly have a good pass defense, but they managed to force a lot of turnovers. The Steelers did draft DB's that can make QB's pay. My main concern is our corners are on the small side and not one of our safeties has demonstrated good ball skills on the Steelers.
