A week later…… We all good?

Extremely happy Tomlin is gone, but we hired a guy that has what, 1 playoff win in 8 seasons or something??? So again, we'll be in a wait and see mode all season.
I would've preferred one of the younger guys, but It'll be nice to see an offensive minded head coach and how different that side of the ball will look.

keep in mind, the defensive side of the ball will change as well.

I look at this like the draft and free agency, let’s see what happens. You have to give it some time. I was all for the young up and comers, tearing it down, building it back up through the draft and signing free agents that are going into their second contract. It’s nice to hire a guy who is from the area and passionate about the team but that won’t mean squat once the season starts.

Getting all emotional at your introductory news conference may of eliminated some of the angst among fans but this team has some serious issues starting at QB and over paid and aging defensive players. This is gonna take a while and allot of hard work and better decisions from the owner, GM, coach and entire organization. Patience I have as long as there’s notable progress in personnel with a positive future that becomes apparent regardless of what the record is next year. With the previous coach, I never got that feeling so there’s that, I guess hope is back.

Best Darth Vader voice “ the HOPE is strong in this one”……………….

Thank you KStilley, I too have regenerated hope for this team. Something long missed.

I was hoping for an African American coach, but I am ok with McCarthy. As a fan, the only thing I can do is hope we win. And truth be told, I really don't care if our coach is black, brown, red, yellow or normal color, I just want us to win.

I didn’t have the knee jerk reaction about McCarthy as a lot have had. The more I watched the league hiring HCs and who is and isn’t getting the jobs, perhaps AR2 may have made the right choice for right now. McCarthy is actually going to have a modern coaching staff and as he told Pomp, he embraces analytics and has always used them. This is something that HCMT refused to do. It’s interesting to learn that Kahn and Weidl use it as well to analyze players in the draft and free agency. I feel the Steelers will put up more points on offense like we haven’t seen in a while. The defense will be interesting to watch with Graham getting full reign with no interference from the head coach like we have seen. I expect this year to be a transitional year to this style of coaching with next season being where it should mesh together.

If Rodgers does return, it may be a good thing-especially for Howard. Another year learning under Rodgers is not a bad thing.

I think Rodgers best gift to the Steelers was he worked with Howard all year and what a great opportunity for Howard to have and learn from one of the best

Happy that there was a much needed regime change. This was not a strategic shift though. It’s essentially an updated version of the previous strategy; instead of a defensive minded HC schooled in outdated defensive schemes, the mirror image on the other side of the ball. Nothing in here screams innovation or the strategic shift that was needed. Ownership thinks they can win a title with the current base and tweaks, I do not. Not having a star caliber QB (unless Howard can produce) is a real issue for McCarthy, who has never really been in such a position. This staff is great for those who are happy with a team that will not be a doormat and have some bit of life every year, but I don’t expect this group of coaches have the ceiling to produce the kind of dominance we saw in the 1974-1979 or 2004-2009 eras.

Dominance? This group of old defensive players mixed with average young guys? Nah ....
However, that train that Tomlin talked about so often - it was off the tracks. So, if McCarthey can come in, get the train on the tracks and hand off a better roster to a new guy in 5 years, I'm happy.

I am hoping they get rid of Mason for me he brings little to no value and they could go with a vet and still draft one to complete the room…

Why the Mason disdain?

He’s a decent QB2 and cheap AF taboot

We could do worse, after years of Tomlinization that is the standard one must beat “well, we could do worse”

The only way his season mattered even one bit is if he had a positive effect on Howard actually becoming an NFL QB…otherwise his season was pointless, absolutely pointless.

I just see him as a fringe 2 and a youth roadblock.

I think we saw his best and I am not sure his play even reaches that threshold.

I guess I just prefer a fresher approach.

One thing I do like about the guy though is that he's pretty reliable. And I don't recall him making any drama or doing stupid **** off the field. I might be wrong about any drama, but I don't remember it.

As you always hope a backup QB is. We want them to be pointless. That means the starter is healthy and doing his job. I have no issues at all with Mason as a backup long term. As along we have a Will Howard type with more upside learning behind him. Mason is very good at coming in cold and carrying a game. He is less so at long term starting but that isn’t why he is here.

Other than his brief stint the last few games of the 2023 season, he looked like deer in the headlights Mason again. In Tennessee as well as his couple of starts this past season. He telegraphed his throws and looked indecisive. Yes, I know it was preseason starts, but Skyler looked worlds better than Mason.

Except according to you McCarthy is already a **** hire so there is no chance he will do anything good here. Funny how that works huh? Or did your “opinion” change already?

You're still butt hurt eh?
The reality is that I still don't like the hire. That said, he's here, so it would be really stupid of me to hope for him to fail. If he fails, the team fails.

I will readily admit,my first reaction was me being totally pissed off at the hire. I think I posted a couple days prior, like my worst fear was them hiring McCarthy with Aaron swooping in with his old coach. A week later, I’ve warmed up a touch and have accepted our situation and as with anyone,am willing to give him a chance. The press conference definitely swayed me…..talk about passion for the Steelers. What a dream for a home town kid.

I’ve watched tons of endorsements. From Joe Montana to Big Ben. I’ve watched his interviews through this media circus whirlwind. There is no doubt he will give us everything he’s got in quest for #7. I was struck by the way he said he never stopped coaching even after his last job. Figuring out schemes, schemes and more schemes.

I will say one thing……a resume of coaching the Packers,Cowboys and now for his swan song the Pittsburgh Steelers, I mean seriously. Talk about an impressive list. And talk about being thrown into the hot seat. Certainly nothing he’s not used to.

And finally my last comment. I watched a KC Chiefs news tape about fan reaction to the hiring of Andy Reid. To a capital T it was like our reaction. The fans wanted a young hotshot up and coming mind. The fans were absolutely pissed at the “fat **** retread” coming to take over. There are many similarities. We can only dream that it turns out the same.

PS……I do kind of wish he would use his middle name for this job 😉

Everyone was pissed off...then New Mike almost shed a few tears and we were all golden...LOL. Yeah, he still is what he is, feelings aside.

We'll see what he can do with what is here and what is acquired. I've read things from Cowboys fans that equate offensively McCarthy's WCO to Mike Tomlin's Tampa 2 defensively..in other words both schemes have seen better days. I'm open to see what he does though as various versions of the WCO are still run by more than half of the league, I'm sure he has a twist on his and he had a year to tweak it on his own without all the other tasks that come with an NFL season. That's what he said he was doing with some of his time off.

In other news Herbig wants out...supposedly.

Not quite what was said. I did find it wild the Steelers limited their best pass rusher last year by keeping him off the field.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and see even Mason could look better/improved if operating within the confines of an actual NfL offense (something neither Mikey T or the Titans had)

But right there with ya

I wouldn’t be mad at all to see a new QB room this season

I was referring to Rodgers presence and stint with the Steelers as pointless, but see how you could take it toward either QB

Under Tomlin we knew the QB3 would be pointless

If Rodgers imparts anything to Howard, which by all accounts he did and could again this year. I am ok with running back the same three if we can’t find a worthy option that doesn’t cost too much. See what Howard looks like in camp and preseason and get him some reps.

It’s not being butt hurt, it’s calling out dumb takes. You said it was a **** hire and now you are saying he has a chance to improve the team. Pick a lane. Or was your initial “opinion” just an overly emotional outburst. Yeah thought so.

A lot of people called it a **** hire including me. Personally I would have went all in on Klint Kubiak. And maybe they did. Perhaps he didn’t want to come here. We sure know Mike did. I’ve warmed up to the MM hire. I am not whatsoever convinced AR is the way to go as QB ,I don’t like the thought of it as a package deal,or any of the other retread QB’s. No to Kyle Murray. No to Kurt Cousins.

What a ****-tard.

(Yes…another outburst)

Definitely my number one want.

I didn’t think they even sniffed his direction. I think they focused in on Mike quickly and the rest is history.

I already said, and it's really simple for anyone with half a brain. I don't like the hire. However, I "hope" for the best outcome. Am I expecting it? NOPE. But, I do HOPE, I am proven wrong.
And I also still don't like Art Smith and his one dominant WR, TE heavy offense to tOSU where they have a bunch of talented WRs and haven't shown to have much in the TE cupboard. But, he's there now. So I HOPE, he's able to succeed.
You really just seem to be purposefully obtuse about how a person can not like a hire and still hope they are wrong and it works out.
Imagine your buddy is marrying a lady who you don't think is good enough for him for some reason. The marriage proceeds anyway. Are you going to ***** about it all the time or HOPE that everything works out fine for your buddy?

The answer is hope it works out, but care a lot less. Obviously.
