Interviews for Steelers new head coach thread

This coaching hire by Art will determine where he sits in Steeler history.
If he totally screws up this hire he will be branded as the owner that sunk this once prominent franchise that his father was responsible for building.
The minority owners need to really weigh in on this hiring cycle and maybe they are.
Get your obligatory interview with Mike McCarthy over with, your second interviews with Flores and Weaver, and move on.
Prepare to do your second interview with Chris Shula next week and hire the young man.

I don't want any disgruntled coach. Flores is an angry man. His anger disqualifies him.
Tomlin on steroids. I'm out of they hire him. Bermuda and the dog Whisperer from Lebanon will jump for joy at my exit.

Would hate that hire, but wouldn't surprise me, we had the guy here, could've made him our DC, but we let him leave, now we'll hire him back as the HC, sounds about right.

Brian Flores does look angry that’s for sure.
Weaver looks like Tomlin 2.0, no thanks. DC of a not very good Dolphin’s defense. Very similar to Tomlin’s Viking’s defense in 2006.
This scares me with Rooney that he thinks this guy reminds him of Tomlin.
They say Weaver displays a dominant presence within a room. Oh boy, look out!

Sure seems like he's looking for a younger Tomlin clone. We'll all be at Sandpiper Crossing by the time they win anything if they screw this hire up.

On Flores: what is being discussed broadly is his claim the Dolphins pressured him to tank-it if that was all that’s one thing

But Flores is suing the NFL, the giants, cardinals, Texans, and titans for discriminatory hiring practices, along with another “John Doe” team.

He’s said the league is “rife with racism.”
He’s called the Rooney rule a “sham.” Is this the rhetoric we want coming from our head coach?

He not wrong, it is a sham...and in 2022 they doubled down, literally. Teams have to overview TWO minority coaches and those MUST BE in person.

Tell me how it isn't a sham if you're forced to interview two minorities even if they aren't the person you really want?

So Flores is saying he felt the interviews he had with those teams were simply to satisfy the Rooney rule and he never had a shot at the job.

Rooney is going to reparation-hire him. I can't believe this is about to happen.

With the rules in the NFL now being so tilted to the Offense, even after Coach Tomlin's hire, I think it is foolish to be hiring another "defensive coordinator".

Sounds like its time for you to go root for the Titans.

*checks the news* ...

oh wait, they hired Robert Saleh to be their next coach, his skin pigment is probably a bit too brown and scary for you. What with their "reparation" hire and whatnot...

Why in hell would the Steelers be interested in Mike McCarthy? What is he going to do here that he wasn’t doing in Dallas or green bay for that matter? His offense is dated! He can’t incorporate the run with the pass in such as to have the defense guessing.. he suked in Dallas! Some of the talking heads going off on McCarthy and Rodgers reunited in Pittsburgh!! What are these ppl smoking??? How bad do you want to destroy this franchise? They somehow getting younger? If they it were it wouldn’t matter the game has changed and neither one has shown any interest in changing in fact they are right up there with tomlin in doing the same thing over and over and over again! Get new or get going!!

That could possibly happen.
And if they do go that route, look for McCarthy to be the next head coach
I'm up for a McCarthy/Rodgers dumpster fire for a year if it lands us Manning. McArthy, Rodgers and the Steelers would agree on that IMO.

Heard a scenario that I kind of like. Hire Mike McCarthy to help develop our next QB. He's 62, he won't have the tenure of Noll, Cowher, or Tomlin, so he will need a successor.

That man would be Nate Scheelhaase. Let him cut his teeth as OC for 3-4 years under McCarthy, and then take over as head coach when MM's contract is up.

Have to act quick and have this agreement in writing as Nate is getting HC interviews already.

Nothing is guaranteed, but I highly doubt they go with McCarthy. They want to get younger and coaching history shows that.

Salute the nation

Especially one we COULD have hired as the actual DC (as an potential upgrade)but let him walk. He was not deemed an upgrade at DC. Now he's qualified to be the HC??

Now that the person who hires the coordinators is gone...we all know why Austin was retained and not Flores, the same reason all the ****** coordinators are hired and held

I think two things about that.
1. No good DC like Flores would want to work under Shades, who ran the D himself.
2. Austin was under contract, so they could have put him back in the booth and made Flores the DC (the best move IMO) but Deuce would have had to pay two DC salaries.

It’s not a sham. Rooney will say he didn’t think he was going to hire Tomlin but was so impressed with him each time they talked he wanted to talk to him again. That’s exactly why the rule is there, and of course the Rooneys will always be open to hiring minorities but it gets others an opportunity with other owners. It’s progress, not as fast as anyone wants but it’s progress.

Of someone is discriminatory in their heart or mind a rule won’t stop them-nothing probably will.

It’s my contention the pressure to win in this league is too intense and it’s too competitive to not be open minded to hire the best person.

What I have an issue with is Flores painting the whole league with a broad brush like that to call the Rooney rule a “sham”

I want a head coach to not be looking for an excuse or two cast blame on someone else, but to be the master of his own destiny.

For what it’s worth I always admired the way Tomlin stayed away from bringing race into any conversation about him, his team, his wins and losses, and the narrative surrounding him
