Interviews for Steelers new head coach thread

I think I'm hoping they hire Shula, but also hire Scheelhaase as the OC. They both come from the McVay tree and would probably be a solid combo.

I don't know if Scheelhaase is seasoned enough yet to be the HC. I think teams are checking him out to consider him for the HC position, but realistically evaluating him for the OC job.

This was my initial thought and hope.

But if Scheelhaase is getting HC interviews from multiple teams at this point, it’s now or never.
He’ll get a HC job sooner than later, so if they like him they’ll have to pull the trigger.
If not, I like this idea. But we’ll likely be looking for another OC in the next cycle.

Has Rooney said why he isn’t interested in former head coaches? Five head coaches have won Super Bowls with their second team.
Did he actually say he's not interested in former head coaches? He's bringing in Brian Flores to interview for the HC position. Maybe he's talking about old (as in age) former head coaches?

That's the plus and downside of bringing in top talent. You know they won't be around long, but you are not afraid to bring in people that won't be around long, or might even be better than you are, because of the help they will offer the team while there.

McVay keeps losing assistants every year to other teams then replaces them with the next person everyone wants to hire after a year or two later.

This is the same in anything business related. You need a head coach secure enough to hire people that might be better than they are to be above average successful.

After watching Tomlin for 19 years, I never got the impression he was this type of coach. He tolerated some of Cower's coaches until he could swap them out. He also struggled with coaches like Todd Haley.

He wanted yes men that would let him run the show more than up and comers with a lot to prove. A show that was above average most of his career, but one that never could get passed the flaws of his coaching style when it counted after the first few years after it was mostly his players and his guys.

Forgot Flores was HC in Miami. Wondering why not Stefanski?

No I do not. what makes you think he would be any better than Mike Tomlin was? seriously what has he done to make you think he would be the guy to turn this team around.

His head coaching with the Phines was. 5-11, 10-6 and 9-8 where do you get the idea he would be a good head coach, especially with a team that is already use to mediocrity. we need a coach that will turn things around and get this team back on course, someone that won't put up with the bullshit we have dealt with for years with these players.

Like I said as DC yes as head coach we will be in another 19 years of the same **** we just got out of. He is not even Mike Tomlin let alone Bill Cowher or Chuck Noll.
All I'm saying is how do we know thar he hasn't learned from his previous experiences...

Good point. I haven’t heard any negatives since Miami.

Obviously the Steelers have some interest with the interview request.

People forget the advantage of that 1 year he was in the building. If he was an *** or a problem during that time, they wouldn't be interviewing him now.
Also, when he was here, the very people who are saying "no way" now were calling for him to replace Tomlin.

To be fair most were saying to replace our DC. With perhaps a HC grooming/look in the future depending on his success/ fit. And it’s too bad they didn’t do that. It was the perfect move at the time. I quite believe it was just another time when the serious fan base was correct.

Which brings me back to the current candidates...

If the pattern is to bring in a 35 year old brilliant mind - then the obvious choice is Nathan Sheelhaase.

95% of our fan base complain about the offense. "This isn't Steeler football". "All we do is 'run, run, pass - punt'". "We don't use the middle of the field"... the list can go on and on and on and on...

So, quit whining, go to your local arts and craft store and make posters. "Hire Sheelhaase". Stand along the highways and byways - hell, start a peaceful protest and walk to the facility with the signs. Make something happen.

I'm doing my part to get your juices flowing...

If Mike LaFleur gets a HC job, and Scheelhaase doesn't, I imagine Scheelhaase will be promoted to the Rams OC position (or poached by LaFleur to be OC where LaFleur goes), and therefore won't be available for the Steelers (or any other team) OC job.

just to be clear I was not one of those people

I don't know Berm. All I have to go on is his three years as head coach of Miami. (as far as head coaching). Looking at that body of work it sure looks a lot like the coach that just left. Look I did not hate Mike Tomlin I was just tired of finishing with the same record or close to the same record year after year. With the way the steelers hang onto coaches for ******* ever I would just like all the stones turned over. I also just think there are better candidates out there., and its the damn Steelers we should have the pick of whoever is the brightest shinning star.

For my money that would be Shula...
