It is the off-season and not lots to talk about in the way of real news right now. So what if you were the grand pubah of the league and had unlimited power to change things in the game as you see fit. Rules, field size, goal posts, elimination of kick offs, extra points, what ever you would like, what would you do to change the game and why would you do it.
My changes would be the following.
No more defenseless receiver rules. It will be just like boxing protect yourself at all times. No more free rides over the middle or being able to go up for wild passes with out fear of being blasted.
Quarter backs will no longer have no hit zones and can be hit on any play. Roughing the passer will still exist if he is hit after the ball is thrown but it must appear that the defender could have avoided the collision in the opinion of the official, and penalties can be reviewed.
Challenges can include non calls as well as called plays and penalties. This will allow a team that is getting it stuck to them to appeal a bad call or non call. It should allow the zebras to eliminate the inevitable bad call and improve the integrity of the game.
Challenges will be 4 in number and each time a team wins a challenge they have an additional challenge added to their total to be used later if they desire.
Improper use of the challenge to delay the game will result in the team responsible being penalized at the personal foul level and the coach responsible being ejected from the game.
Any discovered plans for cheating such as filming the other teams signals etc will from now on result in the team doing the cheating being stripped of all titles in the last ten years, and being banned for the season discovered and the next season. All draft picks will be forfeit for the duration of the ban. In addition fines can be imposed as well. During the ban every team that was scheduled to play the cheaters will have a bye on that game and a lower total of games played in that season than teams that did not have to play the cheaters.
Stepping onto the field of play in a manner deemed by the officials to affect the play on the field by an off the field player or coach who was not part of the 11 participants that started out on the field will result in said player or coach being suspended from the next game scheduled. This will not involve players that are penalized for too many men on the field from a quick snap or confusion and just starting out with too many men on the field.
