It is the off-season and not lots to talk about in the way of real news right now. So what if you were the grand pubah of the league and had unlimited power to change things in the game as you see fit. Rules, field size, goal posts, elimination of kick offs, extra points, what ever you would like, what would you do to change the game and why would you do it.

My changes would be the following.

No more defenseless receiver rules. It will be just like boxing protect yourself at all times. No more free rides over the middle or being able to go up for wild passes with out fear of being blasted.

Quarter backs will no longer have no hit zones and can be hit on any play. Roughing the passer will still exist if he is hit after the ball is thrown but it must appear that the defender could have avoided the collision in the opinion of the official, and penalties can be reviewed.

Challenges can include non calls as well as called plays and penalties. This will allow a team that is getting it stuck to them to appeal a bad call or non call. It should allow the zebras to eliminate the inevitable bad call and improve the integrity of the game.

Challenges will be 4 in number and each time a team wins a challenge they have an additional challenge added to their total to be used later if they desire.

Improper use of the challenge to delay the game will result in the team responsible being penalized at the personal foul level and the coach responsible being ejected from the game.

Any discovered plans for cheating such as filming the other teams signals etc will from now on result in the team doing the cheating being stripped of all titles in the last ten years, and being banned for the season discovered and the next season. All draft picks will be forfeit for the duration of the ban. In addition fines can be imposed as well. During the ban every team that was scheduled to play the cheaters will have a bye on that game and a lower total of games played in that season than teams that did not have to play the cheaters.

Stepping onto the field of play in a manner deemed by the officials to affect the play on the field by an off the field player or coach who was not part of the 11 participants that started out on the field will result in said player or coach being suspended from the next game scheduled. This will not involve players that are penalized for too many men on the field from a quick snap or confusion and just starting out with too many men on the field.

Move the XP try to the 1 yd line
College OT rules except NFL start on the 35, and all TDs must end in a 2pt conversion try.

Get rid of Roger Goodell

winner winner, chicken dinner!

That would be my #1 move. 9 others in no particular order…

# 2 ) Allow all 53 players to dress and play. Why not?

#3 ) Move kickoffs back 5 yards so we can see more returns.

#4 ) Allow any play to be red flagged up to the point of the whistle.

#5 ) Add in a 17th game, and cut out 2 pre-season games. Add in an all rookie, and 1st year player only pre-season game. The 17th game would be an international or expand your base game in another state where teams would rotate between home and visitor. Add in one more bye week.

#6 ) Re-start NFL Europe, and offer some funds for high school programs. . It was a great farm system. I think some future NFL stars can come out of Russia, Germany, Ukraine, ect....The NBA benefits from international talent. The NFL does not. IMO, they are short sided and missing out on an expanded fan base.

#7 ) New concussion rules. 3rd party diagnosis. 2 games out minimum, unless it’s a playoff game.

# 8 ) Allow some incidental contact before throwing a pass interference flag.

#9 ) Kill the Pro Bowl. I used to love it. Now its trash. Simply award off season honors and the trip.

#10 ) Allow each team an extra $10,000,000.00 in cap space that can only be spent on players entering their third contract that have not switched teams. Nothing sucks more than losing a 10+-year vet due to cap related reasons. If they want to play, make room for them. They have earned it.

1. HANS device like NASCAR uses.
2. Everyone wears goalie pads from the NHL.
3. No tackling, just velcro flags.
4. DB's have to wear oven mitts.

None of the player safety rules are going back. Won't happen. Most of the players have adjusted and with the lawsuits and such it won't happen. Being a coach myself, I think it was done incredibly ham handed and stupidly within season. However, it was inevitable. You can't grow a game where people are getting knocked unconscious and suffering long term disability. Lots of people love to watch boxing and UFC. How many people put their children in it?
I would bring back kickoffs in terms of moving it back so they happen. I think it is a fundamental part of the game with great excitement. The counterpunch to a big drive to steal back momentum.
Incorrect challenges should result in delay of game penalties, to stop fishing expeditions.
I would have a premium priced Sunday Ticket with a hell of a lot less commercials. The in stadium experience and flow of the game is badly hampered by the overload of commercials. The people who go to the game or pay the Sunday ticket get the 2 hour version and the rest get dubbed commercial breaks.

Three words: improve the officiating. Easy to say, harder to do. The rulebook can certainly be simplified and I'd like to see younger officials who can actually keep up with the action. Instant replay absolutely sucks. The changes they made to it last year made things worse...by including "New York" in the decision-making, they ended up becoming much more risk adverse and more likely to just let the play stand (i.e. they were ******* who refused to overturn a call unless it was such a blatant miss that a 3-year old would see it's wrong). So you ended up with Mike Carey and Mike Pereira on TV saying "I would overturn this call" and then the official comes out and says "the play stands" without offering any explanation.

well, therte are several things, but reality would not let some happen..... here goes

FANTASY things (won't happen)
1.) rules of the seventies, pre Blunt.
2.) more fanbase contact, announce in game play calling, stuff like that
3.) remove some control from the commisioner (this actually could happen)
4.) tone down fantasy football, make the game about the game of football.
5.) katie perry, katie holmes, duet topless dancing for SB 1/2 time show

REALITY
1.) Paid full time (professional) referee (s)
2.) Electreonic football implants for spot of the ball and air pressure sensing
3.) DIRECT HUGE penalties, by third party policeing, of cheating, of any kind, team / player / nfl / referee / etc.
4.) Code of ethics vs penbalties right hand colum total list of infractions w/# of game suspension, left hand colum total list of infractions that ......get you banned,NO first time / second time / JUST PLAIN BANNED no exceptions
5.) Full suit up of 53man roster with 15 players on PS & short time 6-IR list

Salute the nation

Sudden Death OT rules - play defense if you want the ball
Treat QBs like the football players they are supposed to be...**** all this touch the QB get flagged bullshit

Give each team a sniper with one bullet for each game.
.

college OT rules suck.....

Hell of a lot better than you win if this happens and this happens, but if this happens first the other team gets the ball too. That's ******* bunk...

crocodiles on the field, that should make **** interesting down there

as bad as that is...it still beats the bullshit college throws out there....forget a third of the game...set the ball down and go score....

Bring back and emphasize the return game:

Do away with the fair catch but add a 3 yard halo for returners. Onside kick excluded.

Kicks and punts must land in the field of play. Punts can roll out of bounds, but any kick or punt landing out of bounds is penalized (including going through the back of the endzone).

No touchbacks.

sushi would be relieved if this happens

I like the format, I find it more exciting than the ambiguousness we have now. I was fine with sudden death. Way better than today's version. The college format at the very least would be very exciting to fantasy teams. Getting an extra 6 or 12 pts in OT to win your week? Who wouldn't love/lament that?!

The only thing I don't like about the college OT format is waiting for the 3rd OT to force teams to go for 2. You should always be forced to go for 2 in OT. And defenses should be allowed to return the score in OT to end the game as well.

Reset all rules to 1999 version. Make it a requirement that players sign a legal waiver stating they know its a dangerous game and play at their own risk.
