Steelers claimed WR Devin Gardner

I don't know anyone calling him a bust because of last year. Most didn't like him the second he was drafted for reasons already outlined. Getting hurt was also a reason most didn't like the pick. He was hurt in college as well. He has no position. He isn't a RB, PR or a WR. If he can't return kickoffs then what do they do with him? KR aren't something a rookie should struggle with and he struggled so bad he was benched. Maybe Haley can figure out a way to use him but he was always a huge reach IMHO.

In the very LONG Archer thread, I believe most on their labeled him a bust before he even played a snap and then all season long. He can play RB, WR and Returner. He actually ran better up the middle than I thought he would and that was only on the few snaps he did get. I do think he will need to step up on special teams this season. Most were hoping he would help out in that area, myself included. He looked decent before his injury but after the injury, he looked like a deer in the head lights. I think he will be much better heading into his second year. At least, I sure hope so as we need many to step up on special teams and on D.

Which is what I said. Most didn't like the pick from the start not just because of his bad year. He can't play RB, WR and returner. Even his college coach said it was a mistake to move him to WR just to please the NFL scouts. He isn't an NFL RB and taking carries away from Bell makes no sense. You also have Williams to work into the offense. You have Brown, Bryant, Wheaton, Coates, and even Bey at WR. When you put the 11 best players on the field he isn't even in the top 12. As a returner he was so bad he was benched for a fat body in Blount.

Like I said, maybe Haley can do something with him.

I actually mostly agree. I think with the others on the team, this camp and preseason may be his last shot to make the team. We do have too many other good players or potential good players that may bump him off the team if he doesn't show some serious potential in camp and the first couple of preseason games. I guess, at this point, it is a good problem to have. I just hope someone can return punts because I don't want to see AB out there. It is too dangerous to have him doing it.

I agree with that. I much more worried about the defense right now than the offense. The offense is loaded with talent and bringing in Coates will make it that much better.

The steelers web site just had a short video and a couple of comments on Gardner for day two of the OTAs. The guy sounds like a good prospect and seems to have the attitude that he will do anything to make a roster. That makes me think he is not convinced he will make the steelers but may get picked up by another team later. I also think he is being realistic, Wheaton, Brown, Bryant, Coates are likely the top 4, Archer was listed as a wide so he would be number 5 and that leaves one spot right now if they give one to walking small. There are also several tight ends that just might be worth keeping an extra one in lieu of a sixth wide out. The Gardner kid is likely going to get a chance to play somewhere.

First snap of the year I want DeAngelo, Devin, and Dri in the backfield. **** you cheatriots, try and guess what we are gonna do.
