The Steelers haven't been in position to rest players since 2020, the last time they won the division. They were the #7 seed twice, the #6 seed once, and missed the playoffs once since that season.
2020 was the last year of the 16-game schedule. You may recall that was the season they started 11-0. Then they lost 3 in a row, and were trailing the Philip Rivers-led Colts by 10 points in the 4th quarter before rallying to win. Tomlin then decides to selectively rest a few starters in the final week against the Browns, including Ben, Watt, Heyward, and Pouncey. They lost 24-22 to Cleveland, who got into the playoffs because of that win. Rudolph does what he does, plays decently with a passer rating in the 80s. The two teams happened to match up again the following week, and as we all remember, Pittsburgh started that game down 28-0 in the first quarter -- thanks to a bad snap by Pouncey and two Ben INTs.
So it's hard to say what the right answer is. The Steelers have been behind by at least 21 points in each of their 5 playoff games over the last 8 years. Rest or no rest. High seed or low seed. They've gotten their @sses kicked right out of the gate every time.
Rodgers doesn't need any extra reps. I have complete confidence that he can take the next few weeks off and play just fine in round one of the playoffs. The guy knows what he's doing. Tomlin should preserve his health, rest him up, and see what Will Howard looks like in a starting role so they have a better idea about the future of the QB position. What we'll most likely get is more mediocre backup play from Rudolph, which makes absolutely zero sense when looking at the big picture.
