Mike Tomlin Is Now in the Top 10 All-Time in Wins -- Some Perspective

This past Monday, with seemingly little fanfare, the Steelers' fearless leader surpassed Dan Reeves on the all-time regular season wins list for NFL coaches. Quite an accomplishment. From pro-football-reference.com:

Notably, the only other top ten head coach on this prestigious list with a worse win percentage in the playoffs is Marty Schottenheimer. And Mike and Marty also (not surprisingly) happen to be the only guys in the top ten without multiple championships.

Despite being #8 in all-time wins, Schottenheimer is famously not in the NFL Hall of Fame. Will Tomlin get in?

Schottenheimer was known for Martyball and was widely critiqued for not winning in the playoffs. Outside of Pittsburgh, the national media only cares about "no losing seasons" and doesn't even acknowledge Tomlin's lack of success in the playoffs. Remember, we are "lucky" to go 9-8 or 10-7 every year and either just miss or get blown out in the playoffs.
 
Hey, Scotty Montgomery is on the Lions staff... he, i think, is their assistant head coach.. one of the few branches of the Charlie Brownish Tomlin coaching tree
 
Tomlin will get in for sure. But they are gonna need to add a Tomlinship room. Size of a phone booth should work….since he will be the only coach in it…..forever.

Shottenheimer will eventually get in too

And for the record, nobody ever talks about Tomlin being the all time winningest black head coach because it really doesnt matter for him anymore... anyone in the top ten all time deserves a spot in the HOF outside all that noise...
.. shottenheimer did enough to even deserve it minus a championship.. his martyball concepts were at least partially influential for four coaches from his coaching tree winning championships, so he did impact super bowls, just not his own

Yes.
 
Marty’s teams never got to a Super Bowl.
Tomlin has made it to 2.
That may mean little or a lot depending on the views of the person voting.

I think Marty should be in... I also believe Mike should eventually go in.

Yep...at this point Tomlin simply is one of the all time TOP HC's.....race has nothing to do with it. That said the 2nd have of his career has been void of playoff success.....and it is time for him to move on from Pittsburgh.

Despite the win totals, I think Tomlin will always kind of have that shadow over him of never getting back to the Superbowl after much of what he inherited from Cowher was gone.

They had a window of opportunity from a talent standpoint in the 2014-2018 period to do it (rosters that Tomlin had a big hand in building), but fell short.

Though I would not go as far as to say Tomlin's legacy is totally tarnished if he never gets back to the Superbowl, it definitely has lost quite a bit of the luster it had early on.
