Stats don’t necessarily mean performance on a play by play basis. TJ’s 19 sacks in 23 represented 2% of his total snap count. PFF grades every play.

Also, all sacks are not created equal. Unblocked sacks, coverage sacks, QB fall down and touch, etc. are different than whipping an OT or beating a double team.

BTW, for all the talk about TJ disappearing late last year, PFF was grading him as elite every week.

p.s. Sorry for the snarky “learn ball” remark, that was a dick move.

PFF is a worthless entity. Their big problem is there is no standard of grading. Two “graders” can look at the same play and give two different assessments. A biased vs unbiased can give big differences as well. They haven’t a clue of the player’s assignment on any given play.

PFF isn’t even recognized as an official stat source. Helmet swinger won on a “win” rate which isn’t even acknowledged as an official stat. that win rate was so over hyped by all media and NFL to not have TJ win.

Helmet swinger doesn’t drop into pass coverage whereas TJ does, how do they compensate for that?

It’s to varied a system to be counted on. It could be used in general comparison with 13-25% margin of error.

DL especially DL here, take time to develop. Cam didnt start for 3 years... Aaron smith didnt start right away, Kiesel took years to develop.

Some positions can start out of the gate with few issues outside of adjustments to the NFL... like RB, others can play a limited set... most rookie wrs who get to play begin with a very limited set of routes and responsibilities.
For most positions in most systems the transition from college to the pros is way more complex than fans get.

Judging players before year 3 or 4 is really inaccurate... particularly within the first half of their first season.
The average career length of an NFL Lineman is 3 years.
If they don't get off to a good start the deck is stacked against them by year 3 or 4. If they even make it that long.
One injury or regime change is all it takes to be over.
Thats why what Baker and Darnold are doing is so exciting.
Almost never happens

I thought this thread was going to be about MT's football IQ.

Multiple graders per play, reviewed by supervisor. It’s by no means perfect, but much better than counting stats for what they’re doing. Remember that year the Steelers drafted Golson and some other CB who had 11 INTs? Tomlin said they needed more turnovers, they probably just sorted the CB stats by INT and picked the two highest available.

I wonder if any of their critics have ever listened to one of their podcasts? There are a lot of misconceptions about them.

The other was a safety, couldn't tackle to save his life
