what are your thoughts on this? IMO Freiermuth should be seeing alot more snaps than 15. My god man Connor Heyward got more snaps? WTF?

Steelers tight end snaps counts today:
Darnell Washington: 48
Spencer Anderson: 19 (Jumbo)
Connor Heyward: 16
Pat Freiermuth: 15
Jonnu Smith: 13

Maybe Smith also.....looks like we were going run heavy with our TEs for the game.

Smith was banged up so I think that is why his snap count decreased. In the next game I would increase Anderson and Smith and give Pat some of Heyward’s.

Perhaps:

Washington 45
Anderson 25
Smith 25
Pat 20

Muth needs to learn to block

Smith will never be a good blocker, just another square peg for the team

But damn how the hell is baby Heyward getting more snaps than Muth?

I get Anderson getting some play, it was the right move to get the run game going a bit cuz Muth and Smith are D and F grade blockers respectively…gotta put someone in there that can get the job done…but Connor freakin’ Heyward getting play?!?! Pass that loud bruh

Build Heyward snap count at QB……………

Salute the nation

The contract given to Muth not looking too good. A TE that is not a good blocker is very un-Steeler like. Another example of the lack of player development with this organization. Now he’s also losing snaps and his targets are down.
Another one is Highsmith! Always nursing injuries since signing the contract extension in 2023.
Herbig making a great case to be the starter opposite TJ. I’m liking the Badger sandwich more and more.
Omar needs to address surplus vs need for this football team. We need a WR #2 badly and another versatile OL.
We don’t need three TEs especially when you don’t utilize them all and one can’t even block.
We don’t need Highsmith who is injury prone when we have a better replacement in Herbig.
Just something to think about!

100%!
I am not of fan of 88..
terrible setting the edge, below average route runner, and pedestrian hands..
Pat has never been as good as the love he gets from Steelernation. For a guy with his blocking he should be a ballhawk. He just doesn't offer much volume in the passing game and when he does get the ball his way he usually drops it, and it's usually in big moments or crucial plays.

For as much as we use TE in the passing game they may as well put in the best blockers they have at TE, the would lose almost zero production.

Muth's bad blocking is the reason the FG was blocked. He should lose snaps until he does his job.

He’s been a crap blocker his entire career as a Steeler which made it all the more laughable
When he was the one calling GP out for **** blocking last year…

If I remember right he said “I block my *** off every play” or something very close to that

Somebody needs to teach that man some technique. I’m not questioning that he efforts but if he considers what he does “blocking his *** off” he needs to learn how to actually block.

Is Pat Meyers tryna teach blocking to this TE group???

... and the Muuuuuuuth chant was gifted to him without it being earned. Don't even try to compare him to the legend.
Muth has underperformed in my opinion and I so wish we had drafted Creed Humphrey over Najee AND Muth.

Maybe Arthur Smith and therefore Omar Khan have misevaluated his vaunted offense. Maybe they don't need to load up on tight ends and instead should've went with Washington as TE1 and signed a couple of more good blocking TEs and used Freiermuth's and Smith's money to actually get a legit playmaker for WR2 (actually, I've been wanting them to draft one). Smith is calling plays for Smith to run 5 yards on his targets. Freiermuth isn't a factor.

If this was the other team, during postgame interviews one of the Steeler defenders would have said "we didn't expect them to go so heavy and run the ball at us so much" and the fans would be screaming about how Tomlin was outcoached once again.

Just one game, but the Steelers took advantage of something they saw and were mostly successful doing something the other team wasn't expecting, and got a win in a game they were underdogs. That means that the Steelers coaching staff outcoached the Vikings superior staff that has the great Brian Flores at DC.

One game, but a victory. Of all things to complain about, the thing they did to outcoach the opponent is not one of them.

The game once again hinged on turnovers and was almost blown in the end by turtle ball Mike tryna sit in his shell and preserve a lead.

Playing Anderson and going “big” to get the run game going was a solid move but was not the reason they won the game. They were significantly out gained in terms of yardage and significantly behind on TOP. They only ran for what 131 and it was their best running performance by a country mile this season. The turnovers were the reason they escaped with another razor thin margin of victory. It was hardly some great coaching effort (Mike out coaching O’Connell/Flores) that won the game.

They got a couple timely turnovers which was enough to sit on in Mike’s shell…just barely.

Also noting our DC said that late CB snafu big play given up was on him with two CBs out he called a “difficult” play. (according to him)

But that just goes to the continual year to year players chronic episodic confusions on both sides of the ball.

Always comes back to coaching a recurring theme.

Very Interesting...but stupid!
I just have a one word question for this mind boggling play call decision...
WHY?!?

Perfect time to be in a very conservative defense.
1. It was late in the game
2. We had a 2 score lead
3. You had back ups in the secondary due to injuries.

The only reason for their decision to call a "difficult" scheme that I can think of ....is Tomlin/Austin were looking for a splash play (int) to cement the deal?
However, that is a head scratcher because all we needed was a punt or stop on 4th down and games over. I might be open to their reasoning if the Vikings were on our side of the 50...but they were not, and maybe could somewhat understand it, if we still had all our starters on the field...
The very last thing we needed was a 80 plus yard pass play to the goal line!
41's hustle and amazing straight line speed, won that game for us.
